All true, you have to go with what gets the job done not what "professionals" use. This is why I switched away from DSLRs to the Canon Cinema line a long time ago. In camera audio is fantastic and the auto focus is a game changer for the types of shots you can get.

Great video Scott. Your last comment is definitely more important than a lot of people think. I started out shooting music videos (over 20 years ago) and now do a lot of interviews with senior execs. One thing is common between both. People like to see a big pro looking camera. At a gig the crowd react completely differently - what they are watching suddenly seems important. An event. Same with interviews. Big camera - serious stuff and everyone feels valued. Shouldn't matter but it absolutely does.

My say in this is this: if you're getting distracted - then the things in the first place are not interesting for you. Same with me. I am a musician by hearth and I have been making music for my whole life. I still do it to this day, but it isn't my income source. Whenever I make music - I make music, I can get lost in time and never ever get distracted by anything. But for the money I make videos. And here I get distracted all the time, because making videos isn't something i love 100%. I love making videos, it is a creative work too, but if I could - 80% of the projects I wouldn't be doing. So there's that. Most of my distraction comes in a form of browsing youtube videos for information and I'm kind of OK with that, doesn't bother me that much :)

Scott thanks for your honesty and helpful information. Personally I just feel better using a larger cinema camera on a professional shoot. The perception of our paying clients is their reality... even if we're using smaller mirrorless cameras and producing stellar results, it's just not the same. After all It is a competitve industry and there are times when looking the part is almost as important as the finished product ( maybe??) Also it is super important to me not to be worrying if my batteries are going to die or maybe the camera body might tweek out mid shoot.. yikes My next purchase might be the new Sony FX9 or FX6 (depending upon the reviews and the IQ) not really sure yet or a future C200 mk2 ...but I won't hold my breath. Bottom line I think we get what we pay for, Sure a $2500 BMPCC 6K has incredible imagery and is affordable BUT how reliable is it and what kind of Franken-Rig does it require? Anyways best of luck in 2020 Cheers!

It really does mater what clients think (even when they're wrong), and its better to turn up to corporate gig with a camera that 'looks' more professional. I almost sold my C200 a few months back.... I was fed up with carrying it around when the GH5 is so much easier to travel with. But I'm glad I didn't, and you've just reinforced my own reasons for keeping it. I'm interested to know how you expose in CLOG or CLOG3. I use the Line+spot option on the waveform, and expose a gray card to 'just' under 40 IRE. In post, I use Canon's standard CLOG to 709 LUT, and add a little contrast with the pivot point set to -20. This actually gets me really close to the look of the GH5 in its natural profile (same settings you use), so its possible to mix the cameras without too much trouble. Also, if you get chance... try a 55-250 STM lens with IS. Its a cheap lens but honestly suprisingly great. Light weight, and the IS is really good on it... almost as good as the GH5 IBIS, and the auto iris function works really smoothly on it if you need it.

I apply a REC709 LUT to the display (not to the file), and when I load the file into my editor (DaVinci), it also applies the same LUT, but I still have access to all the RAW goodies (esp white balance, white level, black level, etc...). And there's literally *zero* extra work. Could you explain the extra work on the Canon when shooting in raw. I plan to buy one, but if the workflow gets too heavy, I'll skip it... So I have a genuine question, why not go with the route of the BMPCC6K? BM Raw is pretty insane and works well in premiere now that they have plugin support. It has a higher res and more dynamic range. It also uses canon mount. Sure the AF is awful, but if youre doing commercial work, you should be racking focus using an electronic follow focus. Just a curiosity I have.
@scottmckenna5 жыл бұрын
Lots of reasons. I mentioned most of them in this video. Auto focus is super important and useful in talking head interview situations. Saying that you “should” be racking focus in commercial work is not a correct statement. You SHOULD rack focus if you’re camera has terrible AF, but if your camera has amazing AF, you’re doing much better than anyone who rocks focus. I can shoot at 1.2 aperture and never miss focus on talking head style work and that’s important. But regardless, it’s all about what type of work you do. Conclusion 1. AF 2. Dynamic range in raw 3. Internal nd filter Others actually can be solved with rigging the gh5 but those 3 can’t

Good conclusions for sure.

Can anyone answer how the extended nd (8/10stops) looks? Is it useful or is there bad colour shift etc. Thoughts. It’s one of the main reasons I would choose this camera over the c100mii
@Ryan-Payne5 жыл бұрын
My problem with canon is there's simply no stepping stone. Like you said their flagship dslm isn't a camera you'd want to use as an A cam where as the GH5 is perfect at being an A, B or C cam and a great stepping stone along the way to something like the Eva 1. Canon shoot themselves in the foot with their philosophy on pushing people to purchase their highest end camera. I would love to shoot canon for all the reasons you've stated but there's nothing to buy at the GH5's price range that can even come close to it sadly.

They make interesting decisions for sure. But they make a good product and people spend the money on their gear.

helpful video to know my own camera better. how do you record multiple sources of audio on the c200 simeltaneously? I cannot seem to find any tutorials on this. I can only toggle between XLR inputs and the mic. How editable is your mp4's? I cannot seem to edit it smoothly on my macbook pro 2016 even though I've heard it should be easy! Whats your editing set up?
@scottmckenna5 жыл бұрын
Just have to go into audio settings and choose what you want to record on each channel.

A 7000 camera cannot be compared to 120 camera in terms of functionality, otherwise what would be the meaning of the price difference?
@scottmckenna5 жыл бұрын
This isn’t a comparison either. It’s a video titled “why we switched to the c200”. Which means we tell the reasons and the differences between them.

Take the c200 to a wedding and shoot raw you wont regret it! I do its amazing and I have to disagree with you on the workflow. Mp4 And raw in resolve are identical.
@scottmckenna5 жыл бұрын
That sounds terrible haha. Raw for a wedding? Yikes.
@ChrisbottrellphotographyCoUk5 жыл бұрын
Yeah man been using the c200 since it came out for all my wedding film work. 1tb ssd lasts around 2 hours. So easy to edit and grade in resolve. No need to worry about baked in white balance. You can really make some awesome motion pictures in raw.

with time, USB format evolved to mini USB then micro USB then USB C but for some reasons, XLR never evolved from its horrible large size.
@98JamesNixon5 жыл бұрын
Because it's reliable, easy to service and so widely accepted as a standard that it would be extremely inconvenient for production houses to switch.
@98JamesNixon5 жыл бұрын
There is mini XLR but not widely used, some cameras like the black magic pocket use it though but you need to use it with an adapter to use full size XLR's

With time the headphone jack on smartphones also evolved. But it evolved to Bluetooth without a built-in wired alternative. Is that an improvement for professional video production? Not all product evolution is good for everyone. XLR works well for so many people that changing it would be even harder than smartphones removing the headphone jack.

Would you have considered the C500 mkii if that had been an option when you made this decision?
@scottmckenna5 жыл бұрын
Not right now I wouldn’t have. While I do like the additional options and features, it’s almost $10K more per body which isn’t cheap. The C200’s are great for us right now. The C500 line or something else is something we’ll consider down the road.

Still wouldn't have many of the features that he mentioned he needed i.e built in XLR audio.
@pieterpauwelbeelaerts59955 жыл бұрын
my experience with gh5 and atomos: -battery of atomos is bad -monitoring with not sync audio (recorded sync). +-footage isn't much better in prores HQ. -no advantage anymore of a light and compact GH5, cumbersome and adds weight for gimbal use.

I shoot everything 10-bit and the C200 is not designed to shoot RAW continuously for hours on end. I shot a 3 day medical conference last December with GH5 cameras running 10-bit all day long and it's been the best live event footage I've shot in the past 10 years. If the C200 had 10-bit IPB recording I would be all over it.
