Rebecca Schaeffer began modeling at the age of 16, going off to New York on her own to begin her career. Four months later, she found herself in Japan, modeling. Eventually, she landed a co-starring role on My Sister Sam (1986), for which she is now best known. In 1989 she also became a spokesperson for Thursday's Child, a charity for at-risk teens.
In April of that same year, having missed a signing due to filming, she reluctantly went to a girls' shelter to sign autographs. "No one will recognize me", she insisted, "or want my autograph," but as it turned out all of them did. In fact, the girls were so in awe that they invited her to the Renaissance Fair in May; Rebecca accepted.
Only two months later, she lay dead on the pavement in front of her new apartment in West Hollywood, having been shot to death by a paranoid schizophrenic fan around her age, Robert John Bardo, who came to her apartment asking for an autograph. She obliged, even though she was busy rehearsing in her apartment for the most important role of her short career. He later said he felt rejected by her because she didn't spend more time with him at her door.
He returned a few minutes later, pressed the buzzer, and when she again opened the door for him, he shot her once in the chest, placing the bullet directly into her heart. Rebecca screamed out, "Why?" then fell backward in the doorway, and was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai hospital within minutes of arriving there by ambulance after the shooting.
The killer fled to Tucson, AZ, and the next morning the previously diagnosed "psychiatric patient" was found walking blindly, appearing to be hoping to be hit and killed by a car or truck on a major highway. He was subsequently arrested, transferred back to Los Angeles, and plea-bargained for a life sentence without the possibility of parole, with a then-young assistant district attorney named Marcia Clark, who later became famous for her failed attempt to convict O.J. Simpson of murder. There was a trial by Judge that lasted a month, because the obsessed fan changed his mind about the plea bargain agreement, and pleaded an 'insanity defense'. He was found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
She was buried at Ahavai Sholom Cemetery in Portland.

It meant a lot to me when he did a live stream one time and I said a couple things and he responded back. Some KZbinrs won’t even do that, like Scott is actually interested in what people have to say. I said something about Burlington my town I live in and he was like oh I was just there. I’d love to shake Scott’s hand and maybe go on an adventure somewhere with him. Such a cool guy and so nice and friendly. Very very likeable fella

She was so young and so beautiful, truly horrific what happened to her!! My Sister Sam was such a great show for it's time. Thanks so much for letting me come along at the end while you were in Portland. I still can't believe that little tile I painted and put on her grave in 2018 was still on her grave today!! I remember hearing about Rebecca Schaeffer's murder as a teenager. My Sister Sam was a great show & she really was on the brink of become a huge star. I always remember seeing her in all the teen magazines, especially Seventeen. It's just so tragic her life was taken. As you mentioned, it was very similar to what happened to Dominique Dunne. Also, was unaware of the murderer using the U2 song, Exit, as part of his defense. But, it was very common for many criminals in the 1980's to say that certain songs, books, or movies were responsible for their actions, which is just absurd. Hello and thank you to Marie for the additional information & it is just amazing that tile that she left is still on the grave. The cemetery is truly beautiful. Scott, appreciate the way you recount a story and alway grateful we get to join along. Take care.

I remember when this murder case took place back in 1989. I had been familiar with Rebecca Schaeffer by seeing her act in the series, "My Sister Sam" back in 1986/1987. When her murder happened, it was a complete shock. But as a 9 year old kid, I thought Rebecca was just randomly killed. It wasn't until adulthood that I did some serious research on this case and found out how and why Rebecca was killed. All I can say is that this case is both sad and scary. And I have been to the apartment building where the murder took place a few times in the past. At night, the building looks eerie. But during the day, it looks normal.

I remember being sad when I saw that she was killed. I never saw her in anything but the fact that she was so young and had her life and careeer ahead of her and someone took that away. Glad to see someone thinks along the same lines as I do Scott. I don't believe in the death penalty. Not because it's killing someone but because I don't think they should just die....there's no suffering for them. Besides, it take 20, 30, 40 years for them to be killed. I want a torture chamber for the rest of their lives. That fresh grave next to Rebecca's is her mother's who died in 2022.

It's just so sad that celebrities like Rebecca need to worry about crazies like him. I can't blame a single one of them for living in a gated community. The problem is that it takes time to gain the kind of fame that will allow a celebrity to live in such a place. In the meantime, they are walking targets for all these mentally ill folks who think they belong to them. I myself go back and forth on the death penalty and life in prison. I don't want people like this walking on this earth with the rest of us, but at the same time, I wish they would suffer while they are here among us. My belief, though, is that in the end, no matter when that is, there is a divine master that will see to it that justice is done for all eternity. What a shame this happened to her. Rebecca's words are right, though. Love will always win, and I'm sure she is surrounded by that love all around her now. RIP Rebecca ❤ 💐 Hello to Marie! I'm enjoying your wonderful channel tons!

How sad Scott another beautiful young woman lost to us. She would be my age now to think all she never got to do, the life she has missed living. Keep doing what you do, you do it the best. ❤ from UK 🇬🇧

Crazy I remember this so well. Teen magazines also stopped publication of celebrity addresses as well. People used to be able to write to celebrities that way but that also stopped after this.
