SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega is telling the Arizona Coyotes that the team is not welcome to bring their proposed arena to the northern edge of Scottsdale.
The NHL team is eying a 95-acre parcel of state-owned land near Scottsdale Road and Loop 101 that sits within the Phoenix city limits. The minimum sale price for the land has been estimated to be $68.5 million.
Original reporting: www.12news.com/article/sports...
In an editorial released Monday, Ortega said the proposed arena is not "feasible" and should stay far away from Scottsdale because the mayor will not support the endeavor.
"As it stands today, the fantasy hockey project must move west, away from Scottsdale," Ortega wrote.
The mayor highlights how there's no infrastructure west of Scottsdale Road in this area so he's demanding that any infrastructure must be pulled from Phoenix because Scottsdale has no available water assets to spare.

If this is going to be such a great project for Phoenix, why are they building it right on Scottsdale’s doorstep? This sounds like a rope-a-dope move. Once the project gets started, the pressure will be put on Scottsdale to help with infrastructure and to deal with the transit gridlock on their doorstep and to provide water resources while Phoenix collects tax revenue. There are real quality of life issues for the people living right across the street. Any mayor that pushes back against this kind of high density greenfield development in an area with no supporting infrastructure would have my vote.

Of course the mayor of Scottsdale is opposed to the arena project. The arena will be built just outside of Scottsdale, but the city will not benefit from any of the tax revenue, Phoenix will. If the arena was being built on the other side of the road in Scottsdale, he would be the biggest supporter of the project. I think people should not just take this with a grain of salt, but dismiss it as nothing more than a politician pushing an agenda.

In my honest opinion, the Arizona hockey venture is coming to its conclusion. When the Mayor of Scottsdale points out the team losing their previous arena, barely filling out a smaller college hockey arena, and previously failed proposals, it is time to pack up. If Salt Lake City is welcoming the Coyotes to the city, why not take that offer and start fresh? I know some will say that the die-hard Coyotes fans want the team to stay in Arizona, but no city is willing to house them, and it looks like they are resentful of them. Also, I know some people keep asking about them moving to Quebec City. The NHL has stated that there are enough teams in Canada, and there are no plans to allow any moves or creation of a team there.

Scottsdale is afraid of losing millions in sale tax revenue. A high end retail space, rent on commercial office space and fine dining options across the street from Scottsdale. All those residents will start spending their money(and they have lots of it) in Phoenix now. Wah, Wah Scottsdale you had a couple chances to build this.

I swear I also heard it was going to be privately funded so that means it wouldn’t have increased taxes in the area. I could see them not wanting it if was being funded by taxes because then the taxes go sky high in the area. If you can get a stadium built to a team that is pretty much homeless without having to increase taxes. I would expect that in a heartbeat not only can Arizona keep the Coyotes but you get a brand new stadium that is completely going to be privately funded. That should be a win win for Arizona if not they need to relocate because now you can argue the state doesn’t want the team.

One part of me wonders if this is part NIMBY, part jealousy. The mayor doesn’t want to be a neighbor to the arena project, but might happily be home to the project and collect the revenues that are generated because of it. Another part of me wonders about zoning and planning oversight and permitting. It seems that the state is the sole entity offering the land, but wouldn’t the city of Phoenix (or North Phoenix if that’s a separate municipality, I really don’t know) have a say in how the land gets used? We heard what Scottsdale has to say, but they carry little weight. Phoenix can impose more stringent regulations or requirements on the development, but I wonder if they have or will - other than backroom negotiations that may have already occured. An interesting situation indeed. I would not be comfortable placing any bets on the outcome.

Great job by the Bruiser in explaining this latest development. If Meruelo offered to pay for the whole shot in Tempe like he is with this proposal, would he have secured that site and this issue wouldn't even exist? "Highest and best" bid..."BEST" being the key word. If another land developer meets with the mayors of Phoenix and Scottsdale with a proposal they like, it appears that, as long as they bid the minimum, they can win the auction no matter what Meruelo bids.

@@redpillfreedom6692The Maverik Center is more ideal as a hockey arena, but is about 6/7 K less seats. The Delta Center does have the problem on the ends, due to the basketball configuration, bit I'd bet they play at Delta Center over Maverik. I would rather see them play at Maverik, esthetically speaking, but the Delta Center has more seats, and the concourses/concessions are soo wide open and easy to get around, where at the Maverik Center, the concession areas are overcrowded.

An unincorporated area north of luxe scottsdale had unresolved water access issues for decades, the mayor long active in local affairs having made efforts to resolve things finally cut them off from scottsdale water. He took tremendous heat over it. The intersection of scottsdale rd and 101 has numerous large projects in which representations were made but plans repeatedly modified. Thousands of apartment units ,large commercial, office bldgs all requiring major infrastructure and water. The neighbors have been hopping mad over some projects planned dramatically increased traffic . The coyotes los argos mall plans from decades ago were contentious and the land was eventually redevelopment by ASU and several dozen partners as a tech innovation center critical in the massive tech dev funding of the past few years now yielding multiple billions annually to the region

Well, well!... 😃 ...How many times did he say "I demanded..." in his presser? (Can't stop laughing.) If I didn't know better I'd say he has short man syndrome...In the end I think Ortega's bellicose rant works against Scottsdale. Obvious from the start, this was all about Scottsdale trying to feathernest its corner, and try to manipulate the Scottsdale Road interchange (a State asset) all for itself. I could entertain the guy's argument even though I don't agree with him - that is up until the point he starts acting like a petulant child with "I demanded...", and also the very ill-advised put-down of Meruelo as "a rookie developer". Meruelo made his first million as a teenager in a deal with Walmart...To be sure, this wasn't a statement from the Scottsdale City Council. This was a grandstanding statement by a trigger-happy political aspirant, who apparently hasn't figured out yet that Arizona officials don't like being dictated to by mayors, even from Scottsdale. I'd be surprised if the mayor didn't draw a rebuke from the Scottsdale Council at-large. Some people just can't stay in their lane...

There is no such thing as a self funded sports team infrastructure project. In Minnesota, we had promises from a soccer team owner not to worry, they would build their own stadium and would even pay taxes on their development. After several areas were rejected, they ended up getting land intended for business development in an area desperately needing jobs. Now here we are with a monstrous stadium that sits virtually empty that ended up heavily subsidized by taxpayers. The area around it had been struggling retail which was cleared to make more room and now the neighborhood’s remaining retail is on a downward spiral. Stay strong Scottsdale. Use any means necessary to keep from being forced to subsidize a monstrous ego project that will only benefit others and takes away vital resources from your everyday citizens.

If up to him and his old COPP cronies, we'd all still be riding horses living in the middle of open desert. I've been a home owner in Scottsdale since 1991 when there was no 101, no stop light north of Shea on Pima and if COPP and these old Scottsdale cronies had it their way, it would still be that way.

We “fought” with them constantly. Bob Vairo (may he rest in peace) was a very good man however he was the “president” of a large group of Scottsdale residents that thought Scottsdale should be a town of 1991. Ultimately their “power” dwindled when the city council finally got enough members that realized how much money was to be made in Scottsdale The main reason they did have do much power was due to several board members (hmmmmm) who were like minded. Keep in mind this is equivalent to placing major sports teams in Summerlin or near Summerlin. Another scenario such as this is major sports teams in Pasadena. It’s comparable that Scottsdale is likely in that same predicament and that is keeping their cities presentable and not having so much commotion for 41 games during the week and weekends. Having been to Scottsdale the city is well kept and nice places for dining and shopping. In 2003 I happen to be at the Insight Bowl, on that same day the (then) new Phoenix Coyotes arena was opened in Glendale. Sad to see this occurring.
