Chronic film nerd here, the reason the critics score was not as high for The Whale was reasons around the way the characters (the daughter, since she was straight up evil without any real justification for how she was that way) and the way Brendan Frasier’s character was portrayed (the sound design made his body sound like a damn heavy vessel, and the meatball sub scene in general). Uncut gems’s critic score is so high because of the subverted expectation of Adam Sandler, and the fact that the Safdie Brothers’s do a great job of crafting high stress environments and characters (Good Time is great, highly recommend) and they give dense and substantial roles to actors that people wouldn’t see in those types of roles and non-actors as well. Critics love that type of shit.

If you do this again, keep in mind that from 2019 onwards, RT changed the way audience scores worked so that you have to verify with a ticket to post a review. So more modern films are going to have more generous audience scores because those reviewing it have to verify that they actually saw the movie. Meanwhile, older films were susceptile to some degree of review bombing.

Water World was one of the last big movies of its kind, with most of it being practical and full scale. They had to extend runways to fly bits of the set in! No pun intended but it basically sank practical effects when it never made it's money back and the industry pushed CGI really hard. It's easier to understand how a film like that cost hundreds of millions. Not so much when it's all done with an actor talking to a tennis ball on a stick....that's one expensive tennis ball...
