I have a funny Heracross story: A long time ago, when Emerald was the current game, I thought I'd be cheeky and sneakily use my friends Action Replay to make all of Heracross' stats 999; however I didn't know they maxed out at 256 or whatever and just roll over, so in reality I had a Heracross with terrible stats, and got one-shotted by my friends Pokemon...
@james_ford863 жыл бұрын
@Scott's Thoughts One thing that will help for any future Gen 2 runs: if the pokemon you're using is a physical attacker, make sure its gender is male. In Gen 2 females never get the max Atk IV unless it's a species that is female-only, like Jynx or Kangaskhan. Males aren't guaranteed to have a max Atk IV, but they can have a max Atk IV and typically have higher Atk IV than their female counterparts. Since you're running a randomizer to replace the starter with Heracross, it would be easy as pie to just soft reset if you don't get decent IVs. Pycosites has a gen 2 calculator on their site and is an easy way to check IVs. Just remember that, in Gens 1 and 2, the IVs are 0-15, not 0-31 like later gens. So, for a pokemon like Heracross, I'd want as close to 15 as I could get in both Atk and Spd. Other stats don't have to be maxed, but if they are, that's a bonus. The reason I bring this up is you're using a female Heracross and mentioned that you were disappointed in how much damage she was doing. This is likely because her ATK IV is 0-2 or something low like that.

@james_ford863 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanishGuyReviews It's entirely possible to beat Red with Pokemon in the level 60 range. You just need good type match-ups against his Pokemon and good strategy. Give a Pokemon like Scyther a few Swords Dance and Agility boosts and he'll sweep Red, even at level 60. I'll generally lead off with Venusaur, or if trading isn't allowed, another grass sleep powder user against Pikachu. Parasect is really good for this because Pikachu will outspeed it (so it won't waste a turn of sleep the turn I put it to sleep) but can't OHKO it and Parasect learns Spore, which is 100% accurate sleep. I'll put it to sleep then swap into my sweeper and set up an Agility first to ensure I'll outspeed Pikachu if it wakes up. Then I'll set up a Swords Dance and continue using Swords dance until either my attack is maxed or Pikachu wakes up. Then I'll sweep the team. With a Pokemon as fast as Scyther, one Agility boost is all that's needed to outspeed the rest of Red's team. You can use other pokemon besides Scyther, but you may need more than one Agility boost at level 60. The biggest hurdle, both literally and figuratively, on Red's team is Snorlax. So that's why you need 2-3 Swords Dances, depending on which pokemon is your sweeper. Scyther + max friendship + Return (move) + 2-3 Swords Dances (3 if Scyther's ATK IV isn't maxed) + 1 Agility will outspeed and one-shot anything on Red's team, even at level 60. Obviously, you'd need Pikachu to stay asleep for a minimum of three turns, if not four, which is definitely possible in Gen 2.

Awesome video, Heracross is underused imo since it’s annoying to get him from the trees so it’s nice to see him get some screen time. But also if you are going to do more Gen 2 runs it has some pretty broken mechanics (tho not as broken as gen one). Gen 1 had the badge boost glitch, but Gen 2 had the “STAB badge boost” so once you beat a gym leader, all moves of that type get a 12.5% boost on top of the normal badge boost for attack. So after beating Bugsy Heracross had a 10 power Fury Cutter that got Stab and 12.5 STAB badge boost and 12.5% regular badge boost. Making it a base 19 power move that doubles every time up to 320. Gen 2: also introduced several useful held items: Mysteryberries (can be used outside of battle and also grown) restore 5pp to a move. You can collect these in case you need more ethers/ elixirs. Also the Beserk Gene, it’s a held item that confuses you but ups your attack by 2 stages making a high attack power Pokémon basically invincible if it attacks (so you can beat Red without power leveling)

12:56 Whitney's normal gym breaks the chain since bug does normal effective gym against normal types. There is a theory that this 3rd gym was supposed to be a dark type gym. This would complete the chain. I think the main fan explanation of why this didn't happen happen are that the dark type had evil connotations and it'd be bad to have a gym focused around that theme. I don't really understand this because the 4th gym is focused around ghost types, but there still has never been a dark type gym in any pokemon game. I think another possible reason is that we haven't encountered any dark type pokemon yet in the wild or in trainer battles by the time we reach goldenrod (gen 2 only has umbreon, murkrow, sneasel, houndoor/houndoom, and tyrannitar) so we might not know how to face off against them, but I don't think it'd be a big deal since you could go back to Ilex Forest to catch bug types.

Challenge Idea: No attacking moves! Any move that deals damage directly is not allowed. No items allowed in battle, held items are okay. This would mean you have to use status moves in order to progress! Gen 2 or gen 2 remake with the goal of defeating red. Second Idea: Shake it Up Rules: 1: Create a list of all pokemon you can currently catch. 2: Randomize 3 pokemon from that list. 3: These 3 pokemon will be your team until you defeat the next gym leader. 4: Remove these pokemon and their evolutionary line from the list. 5: Repeat the process! Extra Rules: In combat you may only use held items and pokeballs. Once you give a pokemon a held item, you cannot take it away even if you release it. You can keep old pokemon for Hm slave duty.

What i always found strange about the Gym Challenge in Johto is both the selection of Types and Pokemon. 1. And most obvious: there is no Dark Type Gym 2. Although there are new Pokemon of all types, neither Falkner nor Bugsy nor Morty nor Chuck use any gen2 pokemon. Especially Bugsy seems out of line, since there are a lot of new and also edition-specific bug types. The Lack of a Dark Type Gym might be explained by the fact that there is only 1 Pokemon with Dark-Monotyping, but neither magnemite nor steelix are steel-monotype either, it really seems off
@jcohasset233 жыл бұрын
It's one of the frustrations with Gold/Silver/Crystal that trainers and gym leaders in Kanto are more likely to have a Johto pokemon than Johto trainers and gym leaders. The lack of a Dark Type gym might be in part as it would overlap fully with Karen (I also still feel that Bellossom would have worked better as Grass/Dark instead of a 3rd Johto pure Grass line) but there is also no Ground gym since Blue just has a mixed team.

about Pryce being weak, i read somewhere that the gym leaders progression in gen 2 feels whacky because it's not linear after the 3rd one: most people will do the west side of the map after getting Surf first so Pryce as the 6th gym will feel so easier but given that you could also do the Lake and rocket first you'll end up overpowered vs Jasmine. To give players choice of where to go first they put the 4th 5th and 6th gyms with squad lvl in the 30s and i believe it's widely perceived by the community that the attempt to have a story less streamlined like gen 1 ended up being worse because the progression feels so off and weaker compared to a Koga/Sabrina as 5th or 6th gym fight :(
@jcohasset233 жыл бұрын
Yep the "intended" way is to beat Morty as the 4th gym but it's perfectly doable to beat Pryce as the 4th and then Morty as 5th as long as you have ways to deal with ice and water pokemon. As for my Rival on Red/blue I typically went with b*tch because it was hilarious to read Prof. Oak say "calm down bitch and wait your turn"... But I always mixed the name up like that

Fun fact, your Heracross has poor attack DVs. Female Pokemon have lower attack DVs (to help preserve backwards compatibility with Gen I). Despite that you did pretty well, which attests to Heracross being awesome. Also it's "Ill-ex" forest, according to the anime.

Scott, I really think you should do that Sneasle run next. I don't think I have used one either, and agree that it's pretty cool!

I know jrose has a "how fast you can beat pokemon (insert game name here)" series, but I would like to see one as well for the gen 2 GBC games starting with the dog trio then moving onto box legends.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon3 жыл бұрын
Maybe jrose will get to that eventually? I have a slightly different idea for the legendaries....

sudowoodo is a play on words by the way, as in 'pseudo-wood' because he's a rock type pretending to be a tree (worked on me i was convinced he was rock-grass type for years)

I loved Heracross in the anime. Not sure how it is in the games. But I would love to use it once.

Thank you Scott! Heracross is freaking good! Unfortunate that it's move set in this version is not really good! I really enjoyed the run! Thank you so much!

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon You probably won't read this, but if you want to use a non-legendary to smash the record... Give Kadabra a go. He starts with confusion in gen 2 so Bugsy might be tricky. Once you get to Goldenrod and get the elemental punches there is litterally no mandatory pokemon that you can't hit super effective aside from the two Umbreons, the Jolteon, Claire's Kingdra, Red's Pikachu and Snorlax and the two Houndooms. A grant total of 8 pokemon if you don't count Bruno's Onix because it's weak anyway. With 120 base special attack and 105 base speed he's only 15 points lower in both stats than Alakazam who has 135/120. Given his faster level up he might actually hit harder than Alakazam with equal EXP. He easily oneshots everything apart from maybe Steelix, Kingdra, Umbreon and Houndoom. Ashe's pokemon will depend on level.

Idk why I enjoy watching these play throughs but I really do. I only played up to diamond and pearl and don't even think I beat pearl. My first jump back in was shield. Really looking to the diamond and pearl remakes.

I've done a Sneasel run and honestly the bad defensive and offensive typing (dark and ice are both special in gen 2) and movepool is a lot less of a problem than you'd think. Sneasel's decent attack and high speed makes it very easy for the most part. I didn't even need Shadow Ball since Dig handles all the ghosts just fine and Return kills everything else. I only needed Ice Punch for Lance at the end. The only problems were Chuck's gym, Jasmine, and Bruno's Machamp.

I dunno why, I really like Heracross' backsprite. In my first ever playthrough of Crystal, I managed to find a tree in Ilex forest that I could headbutt for it, but didn't use it. Then, after I beat the game, I reset and decided I wanted to use Heracross, and spent way too long headbutting that one tree... Too bad the trees change upon game resets -,- You should absolutely do a Sneasel run, Sneasel is my favorite Pokemon... despite how both its STABs ran off its inferior Sp.Atk instead of its Atk in its first few gens...

How different do you think things would things be if you got HP Rock instead of HP Poison?
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon3 жыл бұрын
A strong Hidden Power typing would have made things so much easier for Heracross. I am going to re-do this run at some point! So then we will see what sort of difference it makes. (Also, how much experience really matters.)
@christopherballero8663 жыл бұрын
Heracross got a really nice buff in Gens 3 and 4 with better items & better moves. Adding Return to Heracross would've helped a lot as it has 40 more base power, when max, over headbutt
@yuumijungle5483 жыл бұрын
6:25 dude the sudowoodo is a wild pokemon, it doesnt use strategy it just picks moves at random xD also rock throw would be neutral on heracross since bug has a weakness to rock and therefore cancels the fighting resistance. also you dont even have to fight it anyway, you can just run from it.

My female Meganium had Attract, Toxic, Body Slam (don't bother with stab grass moves) and Leech Seed with a Leftovers. Too bad Meganium has to get Leech Seed as an egg move. That Leech Seed female Meganium was for the Battle Tower challenge after being Baton Passed via Double Team Girafirig.
