In competitive Pokémon a sweep is when one Pokémon deals with all the opponents Pokémon, doesn't need to be one-shots. The term is only weird when considering a solo run being one big sweep :P
@MayVeryWellBeep2 ай бұрын
We still play fast and loose for with the term in competitive though. We'll say stuff like "I'm going to try to soften them up with Rock Slide and Intimidate and see if I can set myself up to sweep with Ursaluna in the endgame" or something which basically means "I'm gonna beat them using a lot of different Pokémon actually" haha but it still makes kinda some sense.
@qwirkt2 ай бұрын
@@MayVeryWellBeepyeah in the end it’s most commonly used in contexts where one pokemon managed to one-shot several other pokemon due to setting up, or to having been set up by the rest of the team. When I hear “sweep” in a Pokémon context, there’s a connotation of confidence. Like, now that I’ve set up my Pokémon, I feel confident that I don’t have to strategize much and can just attack the rest of the way. Which is definitely different than the baseball context I hear it most often. Baseball sweeps are extremely difficult to pull off. So I think it’s very different

For Solrock, this could be a really rare scenario where it would be best to use Hidden Power Bug. As its higher physical attack makes this move a very good addition to deal with the myriad of dark types, grass types, and other psychic types along the way. What’s more, it all but guarantees a one hit ko on the dreaded Ludicolo. The one downside is in fighting the ghost type elite four member, however, having access to shadow ball tm, I believe the bug type move would make up for the lost time having to obtain the shadow ball tm if it is indeed a necessity in the first place.

nonlinear is asymmetric? obviously there's a difference between the words, but there's no reason to correct something that technically isn't wrong in that context.
@kevinsips36582 ай бұрын
@@andres.5204 I firmly believe that the word “nonlinear” describes the phenomenon in a much more accurate manner. If we evaluate the damage done f(t) at each level t, we should be able to find a linear function f(x) such that for all x = t, f(x) = f(t) EXCEPT at levels ending in 0, 3, 5, and, what was it, 8? These are the only times f(t) is not described by a linear function, thus “nonlinear” could be a suitable descriptor. “Asymmetric”, while indeed not an incorrect descriptor, is more commonly used in nonnumerical contexts. As we are essentially observing a computer calculate a number (damage) based on a function (of level, stats, etc.), I argue that nonlinear is not only better than asymmetric, but is the ideal word for the phenomenon of damage rounding threshold. This video really showcases why Pokémon Emerald is such a great game for this format. Both of these Pokémon have so many viable options that they can go in terms of their movesets. It was also very unpredictable which of them would do better, you could only really figure it out by playing. Steven Stone is such a good final boss as well, he is definitely the hardest fight and so often a check to Pokémon who have otherwise done very well in the game. You need to set up your whole game knowing that Steven Stone is happening at the end. He also has good synergy with Wallace, who tests your special stats where Steven tests your physical stats. It was a surprising outcome to me that Solrock appears to be slightly better than Lunatone - I guess Lunatone's Special Attack draws on its more glamorous Psychic typing rather than Solrock's Attack leaning on its Rock typing and so intuitively Lunatone feels better. But actually, Solrock's attack makes Rollout great at just the right moment, and access to Flamethrower plus better physical defence making it better against Steven. Fantastic video this week, and your play in Emerald has obviously improved dramatically. Thanks Scott!

Just a minor comment, when you do the curves for comparison at the end (1:32:50), you use the same color code for both pokemon, I'd sugest different color codes for each pokemon, while at the same time making the hue darker or lighter depending on the number of the run you had with the poke, this way one just glances at the legend of the plot just to see how the info is encoded, after this it becomes much easier to remember what is what. One of the most fascinating topics of discussion to me is vernacular. If you’re unfamiliar with the term it loosely means ‘the way a language is spoken’ and this can apply to so many things that we say colloquially. At its core the Pokémon community would be considered part of a group or set of people who have developed their own vernacular when in reference to Pokémon. Thus the term “sweep” in Pokémon vernacular having a slightly different meaning than the “sweep” from a sports setting is perfectly okay especially since your definition for the term is quite widely used by the Pokémon community.

In my opinion (very important obviously haha) "sweep" in the context of a solo run is about moves, rather than Pokémon. In VGC, because there are multiple Pokémon per team, you can say, "I'm trying to set up to sweep with Flutter Mane", meaning, I'm going to try to pu myself into a position where Flutter Mane cannot be opposed by their team and all it will need to do is sit on the field clicking attacks until I win. In a solo run, it's the same, but with moves. Instead of setting up for a Solrock sweep, which makes no sense, you are setting up for a Shadow Ball sweep. You're going to try to set up in some way so that, if the setup succeeds, all you need to do after the setup is sit there clicking Shadow Ball knowing that you cannot be opposed, hence, a sweep.

A sweep is when a pokemon defeats the whole team or the rest of the team even if the pokemon are hurt. For instance your opponent has 4 pkmns left and you have 3 but you set up boosts for one of your pokemon and you then defeat the rest of the team that is still considered a sweep just a mid game sweep or end game sweep because your team revolved around setting up a pkmn after defeating the pkmns that gave that certain mon a problem. But in a solo run you’re technically sweeping everything
