I recently thought that you had reached the pinnacle in teaching methods…this video demonstrates why the disc golf world considers you as one of the best teachers in the game. Thank you again ps I’ve committed to studying your videos and hope to be in a position to start teaching beginners classes in the Portland Oregon area this spring. My PDGA # is 4030 and have been playing since 1978, but I can see I still have much to learn from a guru such as yourself👍🏼

BRILLIANT! This is also a secret way to test yourself to see if you are not getting off your back leg soon enough. I struggle with this, where it traps some power by not letting all the weight shift onto the front foot. I was sure it was a timing issue, but I couldn't pin down the cause. I think practicing this move will help me iron out my timing issue.

I am a fitness coach for disc golfers. To parlay off of Mr. Stokley’s advice. Folks, do some research on how to perform the exercise called (single leg Romanian dead lift). Start with body weight until you are able to perform the exercise with complete core stability then progress to dumbbells. Every single DG’er I work with executes this exercise every single session. Your game will improve. Your welcome

I now know that I've never thrown a proper spike hyzer.... But, noodle-arm that I am, I've always just picked an overstable driver and put it up high and gotten nearly the same result as the up and down. I've never needed to throw it straight up and down like that, as my underpowered throws make high speed discs do that anyway...haha.

On another note, I wanted to ask you if I could caddy for you at the OTB Open? I’m sure you don’t need a caddy with your cart & all but it would be awesome to meet you & watch you play in person. Two things, I have seen pros throw spike hyzer like this. Hole 1 at Waco is a spike hyzer. I have thrown spike hyzer before with moving my back leg like that. I was using ten speed driver, also nobody could see where the disc landed

What stability is the disk to use so to achieve a spike hyzer?

The more overstable, the better. The over stability compensates for the lack of angle steepness.

Stupid question... In the case of the shot you have here - over the gazebo. Why not just a big hyzer? I'm not sure I understand the spike-hyzer advantage over hyzer. Maybe I'm getting it as I type and it has to do with the landing? A thumber/tomahawk would hit the ground and stop. A big hyzer would likely skip hard-left (I think that's my answer). So, the spike-hyzer basically replaces a tomahawk maybe? Just wondering :)
@seanmorris
@seanmorris 2 жыл бұрын
Thumbers and tomahawks pan right/left form their apogee though? Grenades straight down or right if US, Spike hyzer slightly left. As to why a spike over a big hyzer maybe the height required to clear an object or if the right side of the approach is blocked (and as you say avoiding the skip)
@ScottStokelyDG
@ScottStokelyDG 2 жыл бұрын
I'm only demonstrating the Spike Hyzer not saying that would be the correct shot for this circumstance. The Spike Hyzer is simply a hyzer where there is no room for the swing to go toward the right so you need the angle to be more up and down.

the harp was the first OS approach disc I really fell in love with. after a year or so, I knocked it out of the bag because it felt too deep for me. Looks like I may have to give it another try though :P thanks for the video, the back leg move makes so much sense
@collinqs2541

It’s just too deep for that type of disc. Doesn’t feel good In a forehand for me. I use an Infinite Discs Ruin for that type of shot and I love it it’s super thin.
@ssicari
@ssicari 3 жыл бұрын
@@collinqs2541 honestly, I love forehanding the harp, the backhand grip on a disc that deep is what felt off for me. I've been using the Discmania Tactic for a few months, I like how it feels in the hand, but it's more neutral than I want... I wouldn't trust it into a headwind, maybe I'll give the Ruin a shot!

I'm going to let you guys on a little secret. If there is a hole where you don't want to go early left, nor do you want to go late right on a straight tunnel, you can actually throw a grenade. Grab the flippiest disc you can find, it needs to be so understable it almost turns when you PUTT with it. My go to was a BEATEN dx Sidewinder until I lost it. The throw is upside down, as hard as you can, LOW. It'll flip over and start gliding straight as an arrow. You COULD throw a hyzerflip BUT this is really fun. 😂

I wish dynamic didn't pull a bs move with the unsigned ricky disc. Otherwise I'd much rather have an unsigned stokely harp than this unsigned ricky harp. In fact I'd rather have an unsigned stokely harp than a signed ricky harp.
@1andonlyMiro

Holyyyy sh*t did this make a difference in throwing a hyzer. Now I just need to adjust between a really steep hyzer and an absolute spike hyzer. I got so much accuract to my hyzers from this AND added SO MUCH POWER onto them with this. Might have something to do with my physique/flexibility, but I will experiment doing this with just hyzers as well. Also this can be a result of throwing in the winter, footwork is heavily affected by snow/ice/pretty heavy shoes.

On a vertical angle it will still go left Because of the same mechanism that causes a disk to stay in the air despite gravity, I the lift that will be normally generated Except it's not fighting gravity anymore in the left to right direction
@austinthrowsstuff
@austinthrowsstuff 3 жыл бұрын
your taking away the glide though. So when you start to get extreme angles, it starts to not fade as much.
@gannonolson6294
@gannonolson6294 3 жыл бұрын
As he said, it's the same thing as a grenade. So yes, you will get a little sideways drift if you throw something quite understable. A very useful albeit infrequently called for utility shot. But that's why this and the grenade are normally done with a significantly overstable disc. Almost zero drift, extremely predictable parabola.
@joeillingworth1141
@joeillingworth1141 3 жыл бұрын
But it's true that the disk shouldn't skip really because it's going to hit on at least that sharp of an angle that you threw And if it is a true spike heiser Then the disk really doesn't have much momentum left when it lands
