This is a free flowing wet in wet painting that evolves over time. It was painted after watching a video of Clive Sinclair a Melbourne based watercolour artist who paints beautiful landscapes. I might darken the grove of trees that are silhouetted against the evening sunset. Good fun! I'm not used to painting at such a steep angle. It is amazing how the water keeps moving for longer than I thought it would.
This was painted on a full sheet (56cm x 76cm of Saunders and Waterford 300gsm)
The colours used were:
Raw Sienna
Winsor Red
Cobalt Blue
Mix of Cobalt Blue and Light Red
Mix of Veridian, French Ultramarine and Raw Umber
French Ultramarine
Burnt Umber
Raw Umber
Mix of Winsor Blue (red shade) and Light Red
The brushes used were almost all hake brushes 1", 2", 3" and 4" Holbeins, Ron Ranson and Atelier. I used a hogs hair mixing brush at one stage to do the trees on the knoll.
Hope this is interesting to see! It was interesting for me to paint!
I think next time I paint I will be painting from one of my reference photos with a plan!
Happy painting everyone!
Cheers
Scott

HI Lisa Lisa! It was an interesting process. Not very comfortable I have to say using quite a few colours I was not used to and wondering if they were really working well together or not. The raw sienna up in the top right of the sky was too much hence why I sprayed it out. I think it would have been better without that bit of colour in the sky above the trees. Thanks for watching cheers scott

having already subscribed 100 plus WC channels, and in a vain process to learn all the available styles and techniques of WC, I must congratulate you for finally mooring/ hooking me for a while on to your channel. Yours is a unique and lucid style and the results are breathtaking. Though of course howsoever simple it seems, it requires lots of experience and practice, to bring upon results as yours. I wish I could bring skies and seas on paper like you do.

Hi Goel, thanks for the message. I would love to spend more time watching other artists as I still have a lot to learn when it comes to watercolour and painting. I am glad to hear that I have grabbed you a bit in the style I tend to paint in. I am sure that you could paint in a similar way to me by following each bit at a time, but there is always a lot not talked about that if you did state out loud would for me stop me painting! I don't even know if I could explain every little bit of process except in retrospect. Maybe I should do a few videos with a voice over explaining everything I do at every step of the way.....I think it would be a bit boring for some! Anyway thanks for watching and I still have a lot of growing to do in watercolour! Hope you join me in that process. Cheers Scott

@@ScottSwinson Hi Scott, oh yes definitely, because I love to experiment. There's something magical about oil as well as watercolor. You can dispel the colours in each other wonderfully and during the development of the paintings I see for example with you so many things that change with each application of paint. With oil you need a lot of time. The last painting I did was a portrait in oil. It took three months but it was worth it!!!!!! Just try it out......;-) I wish you much fun and success with your paintings!!!!! Kind regards Vera

I was pretty mesmerized by this one Scott, it’s amazing and I'd really like to know something. While throwing paint about willy nilly, did your mind's eye already see something? Did you have a plan? I believe that real artists like you have this inner eye. I'm competent in painting, especially if there’s a reasonable reference photo to start me off, but lack imagination. What was the process here? I’d love to know.

Hi Barbara, I painted this after watching a video Sue (commented below) sent me the link to. He was painting on an easel and used a nice warm wash first then moved onto darker ones. I loved the glow he got from that so that is where this painting started. With the intention of putting down those washes and then put in the darks of the sky then after that I just put in what I thought would work in terms of a land mass shape, horizon, water etc. Hope that helps. Most of the time I paint with something in mind. Sometimes I paint with absolutely nothing in mind and start making strokes and see but that is rare and can really end up a mess as well! I most of the time start with something in mind even if it is where the horizon line is and where the light is coming from. Cheers scott

Hi Diane! I don’t always use fresh paint. I just let the bowls dry out then come along an hour before I want to paint and spray in a thin layer of water with the spray bottle.

Hi Mary! yes! I have not painted many abstract like landscapes with watercolour but it is pretty interesting and there are so many different processes you could use to produce an end result! I always seem to turn it into a landscape rather than going down a pure abstraction pathway! More pink hey? I'll have to try that some time! I'm more of a sombre colours man! lol
