Hey guys, thanks for watching! There does seem to be a lot of discussion about what counts as a true “line array”. Some people have actually been quite helpful in the comment (it does happen sometimes lol). But overall I just want to clarify a few things: 1) my review of using these for crowds up to 500 people stands true. Regardless if you want to call these line arrays or not, I used it for shows up to 500 people and documented and filmed how they worked for us. You can make the decision from there. My main PA system is the EV50, and this system is half that price and throws the sound further. Many bands are on a budget, and this is a great option. EV make my favorite speakers. Not everyone can afford them. 2. Do pay attention to the chart of how they can be angled (which I mention briefly in the video). That does help for larger crowds. I should have spend more time on that, but the video was already long enough. 3. If you want to find more info about types of speakers including point source and line array, this is a video on another channel that did a great job explaining it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoXamGlnhLqphqcsi=RufJzJVpTwK2EESm 4) I have no problem with learning more and being correcting if I made a mistake in the definition of “line array.” However, in the end, the places we played were very happy with the sound, and all of them wanted us to play again in the future. Regardless of how you define these speakers, they got the job done, and people had a good time. That’s what’s important. It’s marketed as a line array, and my understanding is that it was. But there does seem to be a disagreement about that overall. It’s funny. I deleted a rant that I filmed about dickhead sound guys who spend their days trolling people about their gear. I should have kept it in this video 😂 I said multiple times to get the right speaker for this job. This is great for up to 500 people max. I showed how I used it, and I still continue to use it. Hopefully that helps you make a decision. Get the right speaker that’s right for you, ignore arrogant sound guys (and listen to the helpful ones), and do what works best for your band. I do still use this system after this video came out. Cheers everyone. Thanks for watching 🤘

I also wonder how many people are just commenting because the thumbnail doesn’t LOOK like line arrays and they didn’t watch the video… thumbnail commenters are getting and more and more common now unfortunately 🤷

@@ScottUhlMusic Line Array has to do with the radiation pattern of the speaker. Point source radiates in to a sphere, line array radiates in to a cylinder and that makes the decibel levels reduce less with distance from the speaker in a line array, this is great when you are trying to make it loud enough in the back row without blowing out ears in the front row. As for how they look, a line array has to be a certain length compared to the wavelength being played back to achieve that radiation pattern and the driver spacing has to be very close to avoid comb filter effects at higher frequencies. It might function as a line array for high frequencies if there is a tightly spaced line of tweeters in each speaker, the mid-range, not so much. The problem is if you have low frequencies radiating in to a sphere and high in to a cylinder, walking farther from the speaker will sound like applying a high-pass filter. This is less of a problem indoors because the floor and ceiling kind of smash the radiation pattern to fit the area but that doesn't make it a line array. Any way, my big question is how tough are the speakers and how good is the warranty support. I have seen lots of JBL Professional gear being rented out for gigs and very few problems. When I look at their prices, I really like them compared to brands I have never heard before. My setup is all active speakers, two JBL EON715, one EON718 sub and one EON710 as a stage monitor. The sub was bought used and the rest were "open box" from retailers. Knowing that the EON600 series is a rental workhorse, I was not afraid to invest in scratch and dent type speakers although, they all look brand new. Looking at cone area, 1x 15" is over 50 pi and 8x 4" is only 32 pi and the 15" probably has a lot more excursion. The JBL are going to move more air. For the sub, an 18" is 81 pi and 2x 12" is 72 pi so again more air. As for amplification, the 715s are 1,300 watt each, bi-amplified and the 718 is more. Quite simply they have more power to push that air with too. That is good and bad. Your powered sub probably won't max out a 15A circuit so power is easy, my setup might need two circuits if the volume is turned up high enough. For price, mine was around $1,800 including shipping but it would be well over $2,500 if everything was new. But there is more, the EON700 line has blue-tooth connectivity if you need that, a built in parametric equalizer so you can ring out the room, a DBX Drive Rack anti-feedback feature and sound ducking. If you know what you are doing, the EON700 series has what it takes to make your room sound great with almost no feedback or you can use one EON715 to busk with music on a cell phone, a mic and a DI box plugged in with no mixer. I don't know how mine sounds for a 500 person outdoor gig but for a ~small club it is pretty massive overkill. The issue with overkill is that there are not many cheaper options out there and the cheaper options that are out there are not products that I see in rental companies. The choice was easy for me, I went with what I could trust. As for sound recorders, I went with the Zoom H6 so I could use it as a sound recorder and a 6 channel digital audio interface. It's not much bigger than the recorders with only two or 4 channels so I went with the most versatile choice but that was a while ago, things might have changed.

I mean in the end you are so right about „get the speakers you think necessary to get the job done“ This goes both ways. If it works, stop complaining. If my speakers are better than what you as a location can provide, stop complaining about me bringing my stuff: my own wedges, my PA if possible/necessary, my mic stands etc. when you as a venue only profit from it by not having to provide anything. I don’t get it… But stage presence is so much more important than gear🤷🏻‍♂️
@ComodeWorld
@ComodeWorld 4 ай бұрын
@@jimi272 I don't think I was complaining but I know what a line array is and the set in the video does not appear to have enough length to be a true line array. With that said I doubt it performs like a true line array and I don't want people to figure that out after paying $1,700 if they are expecting it to do true line array things. I also laid out what I chose and why. I know what mine can do. It seems expensive to some people but to me it's close to the minimum you can pay for rental grade pro audio. When I say rental grade I mean gear that can go through many hands, often many hands who do not care at all about how the gear is treated and through that it produces sound good enough to pay for. My gear is permanently installed in the venue so anybody performing there can use that sound system. I won't complain about a performer bringing their own gear but the whole idea of setting up our sound system is so that performers can show up, use our gear and have good sound without having to bring in gear and set everything up before each show. We are trying to make everything better piece by piece until we get to the point that everything we have is as good or better than anything anyone would bring to a venue our size. I don't know why a performer would complain about that. We are just trying to have consistently good sound with gear that should last a decade or more if we don't abuse it. Professionally I have seen JBL, Electro Voice, Meyer (I think) and QSC as rental gear. I have never seen PROREC as rental gear, so I've never heard it. With that said, I bet it works well when it works. I know my cheapo JBL setup works well and I expect it to last. PROREC might be built like a tank and last a long time but I don't know. I know that assembling JBL line array wedges is pretty easy (rental companies use them) because I have installed them in large ballrooms (usually stacks of 8 wedges flown from a truss) and outdoor festivals (really large stacks). The video makes it look like assembling the PROREC wedges is hard, that won't affect the sound but it shows that they didn't take the time to get everything right. I don't know about you but I don't want to fight gear before a gig.

@@ComodeWorldI’m talking about venues who provide shitty sounding Wedges that you have to fully turn up to the max so you can hear your voice because the sound quality is so bad. -> Stage sound/volume gets so bad that it’s even crappy sounding in the crowd. I‘m talking about venues providing a set of Speakers as FOH that are lower grade then QSC K10, and then think they can provide sound for a full rock band with it. If your venue can’t handle a rock band, don’t book a rock band. And don’t make the musicians feel bad for bringing their tools necessary to do the job (for example: WHY DO YOU BRING SUCH A FANCY GUITAR AMP?) This is the reason why so many, even smaller bands, bring their own IEM. And luckily at least IEM is accepted and no one can spread bad vibes for bringing your IEM Rack. (Though personally I’m not a fan of IEM) I think it has to do with the whole mentality humankind is in at the moment. People think they deserve to get everything, must be as quickly as possible, but it shouldn’t cost anything. Just yesterday I watched a KZbin video of a sound tech vlogging: he was booked to provide audio for a podium discussion. Only to have the organizer constantly worrying about how the speakers might actually block a tiny portion of the view to the speakers. (Allthough these speakers were far above head height). Sorry for the rant but I‘m just sick of people wanting top quality but not able to compromise any inch towards themselves. Actually I see this is a much bigger issue and imo concerning a big portion of humanity atm.

It's good to hear that this works well, and that more affordable options are becoming available. That said, the system seems to actually function as a stacked point source, rather than a line array. Proreck doesn't use 'line array' anywhere on their website for the product, but seems to have no qualms with other people saying it anyway. The high volumes you mentioned appear to come from a sky-high driver sensitivity, and then an extra 12 dB just for having 4 of each driver element instead of 1. And then the wiring on the back mixing parallel and series connections is there to make sure the impedance stays to reasonable levels. The phasing you mentioned nearer the start of the video likely came from interactions between the stacked high frequency drivers. Proreck has no info on their website on the dispersion characteristics of individual boxes, so it's probably safe to say that their hf drivers have a conical or otherwise pretty wide dispersion in all directions. That will lead to a higher degree of interaction between the boxes than true line arrays, which have an extremely narrow (15 degrees or less) vertical dispersion to their hf drivers. So the Proreck boxes will have more audible phasing in the near field near the front of the stage.

That’s a good point! And I didn’t angle these or hang these like a true line array, which is why I threw in that graph on how to set them up correctly. But you can angle them. And yeah, I’ve noticed people are very picky about what “line array” means I’ve found haha. But it does say line array on their website. Even in the “general category” of it 👍

I want to preface my comment by saying I enjoyed the video, and thought you did a decent job reviewing the speaker. I also haven't heard this speaker in person. With that said, I feel like there's a lot of context missing. Specifically, why are you recommending a short line array type speaker? Line arrays require a fairly long line of speakers to effectively shape sound to "throw" farther. If we do the math, this line array is only directive for about 1 octave more than something like a K12. There's also going to be phasing between the elements, which can be prominent without proper R&D. Especially for Bands and DJs on a budget, I would recommend buying versatile, point source boxes so they can also pull monitor duty when needed. And with regards to "throw", the best solution would be to get taller speaker stands.The higher the speakers, the farther they "throw". Which is why you see them flown so high at concerts and festivals. While I am not an audio "expert", I do equally split my time doing sound and as a musician. I also majored in audio engineering, and I deal with both line arrays and point sources every week. However, I want to stress that at the end of the day, the audience experience is the determining factor of a successful gig. Not what speakers were used, or which hi hat mic. It's very easy to get caught up in new trends, new gear, new tech. Even if you are buying brand new, I'm confident you can get equipment that can out-perform this system, will better retain its resale value, and ultimately be a better purchase than this system. Not to mention the hassle of setting your angles and the series parallel stuff (don't want to blow up your speakers!). Bring the right tool for the right job.

Thanks for the comment! I couldn’t agree more. As long as it gets the job done, that’s what counts, and I hope that my video comes off as “this is what it can do… make the decision for yourself.” It does seem like a lot of people disagree on what is considered a “line array,” but overall I wanted to stress the 500 people setup. And you are correct, higher speakers can throw the sound further. And these can go up quite high and can still be angled to get a similar line array shape. But as long as it’s within the 500 people limit, I think these are great. Thanks again for the comment! 🤘

These seem like an incredible deal. Personally I'd eventually try to just add an amp so I could have the subs run on their own. That would etch out a bit more performance out of the tops because those subfrequencies do eat up headroom in the tops. Two pairs of these setup like that would be incredible. Heck as is they are pretty incredible. Most budget PAs don't even bother accounting for angles in their designs. Great job ProReck.

Great, great, great review Scott. I was waiting for this one to come out and you picked out the pros and cons perfectly. Ideal for what I’m looking for, we are a 4 pc blues band with a harp, drums, guitar and myself on vocals and bass. Stupid question, but I assume plugging my bass amp into the system would be the equivalent of your bass tracks in terms of sound and power ? I’m also assuming you’re using your in ear monitors. The only thing I didn’t care for personally, was the fact that the sub woofer was heavy… on a different note, we played an outside gig in July and it was a 94F day, lots of humidity, felt like 110 F, and there was no room for a tent for shade. Just cooked and soaked. Great crowd, but I wouldn’t play there again if it meant playing in the direct sun. Very uncomfortable. We were promised a tarp for shade/rain protection, but didn’t materialize. Thank you again for your review Scott. Very much appreciated. P.S. 12:15 . I hate to come off as being negative but I don’t believe these should be recommended. For less than the price of these you can buy a EV ZLX system with 2 tops and a sub. These are advertised as $4,000 speakers at a discount of 42%. Line arrays are meant to have angles for directing sound and these don’t even have a horn with waveguide. This video was put together in an amazing manor and the band sounds great, but I personally as an experienced sound engineer I feel as this is a bad recommendation.
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting and keeping it civil and respectful. I left a pinned comment about how there is a lot of disagreement of what is a “line array.” Even doing more research on the topic I’m finding more and more conflicting info the more I look. These can be angled though, and maybe I should have spent more time on that. Plus the thumbnail doesn’t show that it’s an angle, so I don’t know how many people are just thumbnail commenting (you aren’t, since you left a time stamp, so thank you for not doing that). However, I still stand by the review that these work really well, and I documented how I used them. For the price, they are quite great! I have the EV 50s and love them, but that is double the price of this. My singer had the ZLX with two subs, and it’s about double the price of this as well. There are ALWAYS people looking for more pro expensive gear, and others looking to save money and get something on a budget. This is for the later. Events of 500 people or less, I will continue to use this system. Especially for outdoor stuff like show 3 and 4 in this video. But thanks for sharing your opinion and for commenting. Cheers 🤘

The iPhone recording was really good. I’ve used video apps that allow some gain control to avoid clipping when close to the stage but that didn’t seem to be a problem here. I’m guessing the newer iPhones have better gain control. I have also tried the little Zoom H2 plugged into my iPhone with a USB to lightning adaptor and it sounded even better. Stereo and no need to sync in post. The algorithm god’s were pleased. BTW, you can get an iPhone holder/handle that has a 1/4 threaded mount on top for the Zoom. Im always skeptical of “cheap”. Speaking from experience, I’ve found that it’s generally more cost-effective to buy a well-appointed quality speaker on the used market. I’ll be honest, I’ve never had any luck with inexpensive speakers…I’ve only ended up replacing them and losing money on the purchase. For the money, my recommendation to bands on a budget would be to look for used QSC K12’s with a KW181 sub for about the same price. You’ll get much better frequency response with a flatter curve than with really inexpensive boxes. You’ll also have a lot more headroom with 6,000W peak / 3,000W RMS.

Hey, just wanna share my Opinion on this one! I don't wamma say anything angainst the System, and i think it is a overall a good System for small bands. However one thing that may be a problem for Bands that maybe just wanna buy their first Soundsystem, is that the Band will grow i the Future, and so got the Soundsystem, with the System you showed in the Video, upgrading Parts of the System is farely complicated, due to the Amping System. I case the Band or the DJ got the Budget i would Recommend a Passiv or Active point Source speaker with a seperate Subwoofer. I case of a DJ this can actually be helpfull when he wants to play more Outdoor Events, or go in a Environement where he just needs more Bass, so he can simply add more Subs, without having to upgrade the whole System. Another point is that the Subs and the Tops only can be controlled via the dial on the Subwoofer, which ist hard tho reach during a Show. That is something that could be done diferentely with seperate Sub and Tops. Still I think this can be a good Sound System for a few Bands. Thank you for your Review! regards from Germany

Interesting kit, but like you said looks bulky as hell! I run a Bose L1 Pro8 single unit for my Roland V-Drums, which we also use as a stage monitor for the rest of the band as it has 3 individually controllable inputs. Probably not as loud as the stuff you're reviewing, but can still make your ears bleed. Has a really good balanced throw too, with very little, if any, hot-spotting. If you need more volume, then a pair would be great, or the slightly meatier Pro16. Set up in less than a minute, and easy to carry and transport. Of course, somewhat more expensive (bought mine used) but when you listen to it, you'll know where that extra money went ;-)

This would be a cool little pa system if line arrays are actually line arrays. And im sure im not the only one who commented on this point, but a line array is special because of waveguides/ directional control. Engineering the waveguide without coloring the sound and having loads of comb filtering is where the magic is at. Admittedly, they are still wildly overpriced for what they do, but if it was easy to copy, then the big dogs in the industry wouldn't be able to charge what they do. Im sure these sound nice and 95% of people in a crowd would never know anyways, but with a real line array you can walk just about anywhere in the crowd and have the same balanced mix. For small gigs though i can see the appeal of a system with a single power plug that sets up in 15 minutes and requires no crossover.
