Hey mate, nice upgrade to the shed. Engineer here, used to live in a welding bay, a long time ago. Just some gentle, constructive advice here: Welding produces full-spectrum ultraviolet radiation, including the most carcinogenic frequencies (called UVC). The sun produces UVC also, but it's mostly blocked by the upper atmosphere. There's no safe level of exposure to UV-C. It's very dangerous to expose any skin to the arc flash. Hands and arms are especially vulnerable, as is the vee of your neck. It's no fun talking about melanoma or SCC with a dermatologist. You don't need specific gloves to start with, but at least wear full leather gloves and a heavy cotton work shirt. Leave a window or door open as well, because the fumes are also bad. Great that you're having a crack at welding. Good skill to develop. I'd just hate to see you fry your DNA in the process. I'd also hate the audience watching to think that's a good idea. Seems like a nice home shed fixture table - should be good for making brackets, etc, square and true. Well done showcasing it as an obvious upgrade from the 'council cleanup' welding table.

G'day mate good job. Just remember not to put anything flammable (rags, etc) under there or your legs might get a bit warm while your welding (speaking from experience). Canola cooking spray is a good alternative to anti spatter too......way cheaper. You'll be banging out quality work in no time..

I have done the same thing with the shelves on tool trolleys and benches I’ve put together - it’s so much better than having crap fall off the back of the shelf. I like the zip tie trick - I’ll have to remember that one. I can’t critique your TIG welding - you’re doing far better than I’ve managed. For TIG welding a rule of thumb is what number cup it is is how many Liter/Hour of argon flow is required. With bigger cups and more tungsten stick out, bump it up a couple L/H. And set the post flow up so it keeps the tungsten cool, and hold the gas flow over the weld until it stops

Nice job Scotty, i looked at a bench a few yrs ago but ended up making/welding my own from a 10mm plank of tread checker plate which used to be an old bbq plate! Tig welding, check if the electrode diameter is less than the thickness of material your welding and it must be clean. Glad you like the new weld trolley !

Scotty, almost universally when you grip a tool that requires dexterous action you should holdout it with you finger pointing down the tool. So, index finger on top of the carving knife, index finger points down the panel saw, index finger points down the screwdriver.... try that with your welding grip.You might find you have finer control.

I'm no welder but I learnt to TIG on my tinny, my opinions means nothing but I feel like you really need to weld up a stool so you're comfy, its so much easier to learn when you're sitting up above the job imo also feel you just need to dial the settings in on your machine and you'll be fine mate. I'm sure there's others who will correct me if I'm wrong. All the best mate.

@@blownhemi did you see how much easier it was to get a puddle going with ally compared to the mild. Just remember you need to put in extra prep work for it, and control the temp of the work piece. There is a reason they make heat sinks out of ally, that sucker will soak up all heat you give it and turn stuff into a blob PDQ.
@blownhemi2 ай бұрын
@DodgyBrothersEngineering yeah, it puddles well. I'll just have to play with amps and stuff to get the welds I want, and yeah, I know that stuff has to be clean. Using the peddle helps as well
@DodgyBrothersEngineering2 ай бұрын
@@blownhemi the quick puddle is a double edge sword. You need to keep your gaps closer, because it is easier to burn edges. When dealing with thinner ally I sometimes would point the tip away slightly from the join point to get the puddle started, because by the time you realise there is a puddle going, you could be only fractions of a second away from blowing a hole. I found ally both easier and harder to do.
