Probably the best review I’ve seen on these mounts. Looking to purchase this, the extender, and rod holder and put it on my Swift pack 12.

Scotty makes great stuff. I've been using their rod holder for a few years and it's become an indispensable piece of gear for me. And it's held up perfectly through a lot of abuse on portages and such. Big thumbs up to them.

I want to use my Canon 80D. How much weight can it hold?
@TheOneCanoe4 жыл бұрын
I normally use it with small action cameras, but I tried putting my Canon T5i on it and it seems to support the weight just fine, so it should be Ok with a Canon 80D. However my concern with an expensive camera like that would be the fact that you are out in an water environment and that camera is not waterproof.

@@TheOneCanoe It water resistant but you are right not waterproof. I have shot in the rain but yeah I am concerned about that also. Thanks for the input.

Good review. I have been looking for a good camera mount option and have browsed through Railblaza's options but didn't care for them. This looks a lot more like what I want.

I think you'll find these Scotty mounts to be very well made and durable too.

I've just been using the flex grip jaws with the GoPro, and that does OK... But my bigger issue is the internal mic in the camera picking up the vibrations in the boat. Every paddle bump or rock scrape, etc is transmitted directly to the camera. What do you do for sound while you're in the boat?
@TheOneCanoe7 жыл бұрын
Hey there Flying Squirrel Outdoors, I too have always had an issue with the poor quality audio I get from a GoPro or similar Action Camera when it is stuffed inside it's waterproof housing. You'll get much better sound if you take the camera out of the housing or use one of those 'back doors' with the slots in them, however these are not really good options when using the camera near the water. What I tend to do is take along a small digital recorder. I use a Zoom H1. I can record myself talking and any other natural sounds (loons, paddle splashing, etc) I just sync everything up when I edit the video. Check out one of my earlier videos entitled "Photo Video Tips - Double System Sound" to get an idea of how it works.

TheOneCanoe Thanks! I figured you probably had a separate sound recorder, but like you say... more to have to keep dry. I've had problems even outside the housing, unless I pick up the camera. The vibrations through the boat and mount structure tend to overwhelm any noise through the air. Appreciate the help!

Question: I'll be using this mount on a kayak that I am rolling and in rough conditions. What keeps the mount (or the arm) from spinning/pivoting around out of position? Does it have a lock to keep it facing where it needs to be?
@TheOneCanoe4 жыл бұрын
Yes, when you attach the base to the rail, it will ‘lock’ in place so it always remains in the same orientation.

Just getting into kayaking and would love to take pictures from the boat using a smaller mirror less camera. Would this system work for that kind of camera work? I also liked your video on the Tarpon kayak. Is that a good boat for photography? Thanks!
@TheOneCanoe5 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, Not really sure what your question was, I think there is a sentence missing. I've only used this system with small light-weight action cameras, however these mounts are very sturdy so they could probably support heavier cameras also.

Hey Scott, yes I’d have no issues mounting my SONY a6000 mirrorless Camera on that Scotty mount system. Also the Tarpon 100 is a great photo/video platform. It has mounting rails on the front and the back, and it is a very stable boat.

TheOneCanoe Ok thanks again. The a6000 is the camera I have as well. Glad I found your videos 🤠
