I want to make it clear that I have no hard feelings towards Scotty. With this video I just wanted to point out some inconsistencies from the videos I've shown in a comedic way as well as show that BMW's aren't as complex or expensive as he usually says.
@nyioves Жыл бұрын
Oh OK. They are not as complex ? I have been to 4 different shops , two i have used for years who were like "take it the dealer" or recommended an indy shop. Even indy shop wanted 4,000 to fix an oil pan gasket. I guess then there is the dealer who I actually found satisfactory albeit expensive. He is pretty much spot on unless you want to become a DIY BMW mechanic because you love the car so much. Not everyone has a garage at their disposal to do that or the time.

Hes making points for everyday people looking to buy a car. Stuff like the plastic in the engine is a huge engineering flaw that is basically planned obsolesce in high sticker price. The point you made about removing the beauty cover can help, but outside of people into performance cars, very few buyers of new BMWs are going to even want to touch the engine, let alone take off a part and keep it off. Your points that hes a "fucking idiot" for mentioning that things like the plastic pieces, unrelated to his current job, can break easily during repairs. The plastic, as you mentioned, is not necessarily consequential, but if it breaks off and that piece gets stuck in the engine somewhere, especially if you don't realize, it is going to melt and screw shit in the engine. The "Supra uses a BMW engine lol" is not even a real point; Toyota doesn't make sports cars anymore and hasn't for nearly two decades, even the 86 is really a Subaru. Scotty himself has said multiple times that the new Supra is not a real Toyota. Lastly, on your point about tech, hes exaggerating when he says shit like the convertible top is rocket technology, but what he's trying to say is cars last longer and cost less to fix when mechanisms are simple and non-electronic. Not everything on a BMW has to be fixed by a dealer, but the electronics systems often have to be. It again makes you feel like you are getting a high sticker product with planned obsolesce; why implement an electronic convertible top that you know is going to shit itself within 5-10 years (keep in mind, warranties last like 4 years if you drive 15k/year) if there already exists a cheaper, simpler alternative that can be easily fixed by the consumer? Even if Scotty is going overboard on his criticism, the point about these cars being unreliable comparatively to other brands, like Toyota, is evident in depreciation and the prices of used cars from these brands; it's not like Scotty has a price cartel on used cars.

It’s a beautiful truck and I’ll keep driving it. By the way, I had it at my shop (I have a dynamometer in my speed shop) and it tested very close to its original 381 horsepower from it’s 5.7 L V8 and is still as smooth as the day I bought it. Everything works right down to the windshield washer. Good luck with that on a German car I’ve had BMWs but I was smart enough to lease them and not purchase them. I would never own a BMW outside of warranty. The 380,000 miles Sequoia, I would put my wife and children in that car because I know it’s gonna work every time and it still looks gorgeous and it’s such an amazing truck/suv. It's possible that your exhaust timing solenoid is shot. That's my first guess if you're having multiple misfires and ruled out the easy stuff. The BMW has given me a shitload of issues in less than 2 years. It’s problem after problem. Fix one thing, another breaks in a couple weeks driving it as gentle as can be. The Audi, Benz and VW have never given me issues near to what the BMW has and if they do it’s an extremely easier time fixing it. Maybe this is just by chance, but that’s what I have to say about my ownership of a BMW. But I gotta say they are fun cars when they work. I’m just trying to sell my BMW now, I’m too scared to drive it so I just leave it parked on the side of the house until some godsend decides to buy it. Yeah they aren’t bad because if they were bad she wouldn’t wanna buy another one smh I’m personally more of a Lexus guy (just prefer their designs, don’t really care too much about going fast don’t hate on me) But I won’t hate on bmw Or Mercedes Or any brand Even Tesla I understand that just because I’m not the target customer of a product but I also understand that it doesn’t mean they’re had

I have been wanting to expand my knowledge of cars and car maintenance. I’m basically starting with no background knowledge truthfully. Scotty Kilmer was the first car guy I found on KZbin. I did, and still do find him informative and entertaining, but I might have clung on to what he says too tightly. I saw BMWs as “over priced money pits”, but videos like yours are nice because it shows the other side of the story. From what I’ve heard, it sounds like BMWs are enjoyed most by hands on, “active maintenance” people who know everything (or at least a lot) about their cars inside and out. Being that kind of person is where I hope to end up one day. I like your videos a lot, I’ll be looking forward to more Bimmer vids!

I don't like BMWs as a rule (we owned a 2010 535i GT that had a ton of problems from day one, and after only two years needed a new head gasket), but I don't think that experience was necessarily typical, and I won't pretend we've never had domestic vehicles that are lemons too. BMW is a more upmarket brand (Like Mercury was to Ford or Buick is to GM), so parts and service are naturally going to be more expensive. It's for that reason that I would not recommend a BMW as a first car for a young driver, nor for someone who is not mechanically inclined. They are meant for mechanic-racer types who want a sporty, more modern car and are probably going to be customizing it anyways, and like any luxury or upmarket car, you're paying for the name, just the same as if you buy a Mercedes, Cadillac, Lincoln, or Lexus.
@ItsJustMeMcKee11 ай бұрын
I think he's a great mechanic, but I've he'd 3 BMWs and I've never had a single problem with any of mine. I've always done maintenance on them. Changed my oil at 5k and just simply took care of them.

It is not a 'beauty cover'. If you flip it over, there is dense sound insulation on the other side. Modern cars with direct injection make a loud clicking noise at idle. Unlike Port injection or dual injection. The insulation on the underside of the hood is not enough, so it takes both to keep it quiet. My cars have the M54 engine and are much quieter. 24mpg by the way. And if you only began poking in the engine after twelve years, why are you complaining? Typically these are the third owners who complain. None of mine leak, smoke or burn oil or anything. All original from 1999 to 2003.

I have driven BMWs. They aren't bad, so long as it's new and you're ready to unload them after a few years. My close friend and neighbor has one and kept it long term. His headlight went out and BMW quoted him $2K to fix. $2K for a headlight. The simple fact is Germans over complicate the shit out of everything. I've experienced this first hand having worked with a company owned my MTU (now owned by Rolls Royce). Hey but you know better I guess. I can tell by how you explain everything with "fucking this" and "fucking that". If you want own a BMW and feel elite, by all means.
@UltimateBimmerExperience10 ай бұрын
I think you missed a lot of my main talking points. Anyway, of course the dealership is gonna quote a lot of money. Just like any other dealership would. Nor is a headlight even a good example of the cost of owning one of these. In my experience with 5 BMWs I've owned over the last 5 years, a headlight has never just "went out". But hey you know better I guess. I can tell by how you said you heard all this from someone else and you've never owned one. (just like I said in the video)

I have a parallel view on BMWs . I used to bring the partners of the architectural firm to BMW for service and repairs, arrange for service appointments, and check on the repair completeness. One more thing arrangevfor the eye watering payments. I drove 4 times the partners' mileage. I drove top of the lineTurbo Charged Fords turbo coups. The cost of service for the BMWs were 4 times the Ford.

Never owned a BMW (subaru guy) but from what I always heard everyone who enjoyed theirs bought them with lower mileage or new. I've had 2 friends with older 5 series and 3 series? iirc both started having issues main reason they bought cause they were cheap. It's a matter of complexity and with age those systems fail. Japanese cars relatively speaking aren't this way so issues tend to arise less. Maintenance is a key factor also, if the craw as kept up to schedule with servicing, chances are it can last a bit. The real redpill here is just do your due diligence and don't believe anyone, even Scotty admits.

My F30 is the first car I've actually done maintenance on by myself. It's actually not as bad as people say. Not even close. I find that it's easier and more fun than other cars that i've worked on. The connectors and plastics don't feel cheap like other manufactures. I think people hate so much because they don't care to learn how BMW does things. The way they do things is actually really intuitive once you figure it out. I've also had no major issues. Just routine maintenance so far and i'm at 100k miles. I'm definitely buying another BMW.

BMWs are endless money pits and they're full of cheap plastic components.
Bmw is a luxury car so you should expect to pay luxury car prices in repairs and dealerships don't make money from the sale of a car it's mostly from repeat service and luxury Japanese cars are just as expensive to repair and don't think LEXUS and ACURA don't have their share of problems, they don't do recalls they just extend the warranty on defective parts

Professionals can’t leave covers off and handles dangling. I think his audience may be people who don’t know how to work on cars and and don’t want to. For them BMWs are heavy on the maintenance. He’s not selling hacks on his own car. With that said BMWs are very good looking cars, But through my research they are definitely more complicated than the average car.

Pretty much anything with an N52 and 6 speed manual will be rock solid, just make sure the clutch, valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket and water pump are relatively fresh and you'll be good for a long time. I wish I had my current 3 series as my first car, with all the resources out there it's a joy to wrench on and extremely reliable. Not to mention fuel efficient and somewhat quick without having enough power to get you into any trouble. Just took my 08 on a road trip from Phoenix to LA to Ohio couple weeks ago and had 0 problems. 140k miles. Don't be afraid of BMWs and what people have to say about them, they're quite well built and will treat you right as long as you find the right one
