My first bike was made from a frame me and my buddies got and we built it up with spare parts! Now I just got back into riding after taking a break for 10 years… I may have went all out and got a built s&m around 1500-$2000 bike. I love it. Nothing like I’ve ever ridden it’s insanely light definitely made me get back on the saddle. Love you guys keep going! You were the first channel I subbed to. 15 years ago when you guys started. ❤❤ thanks for always releasing wholesome down to earth videos.

The modern cro mo three piece cranks that come as standard on most mid to high end completes are pretty damn good , back in the early 90s a crank set like we see today would have been considered a pro level item , and would have cost over £120.00

When I rode flatland years ago, whenever I did backward peg decades on my 88 Haro Master my left foot always touched the ground after I went over the head tube instead of landing on the back peg. I had been trying for 6 months to pull it without touching without success. A friend of mine got a brand new 92 Master which had been redesigned, and from the very first time I did the trick on his bike my foot would land on the back peg. I realized right then how much difference a bike can make! Congrats to whoever ends up getting the free bike. Edit: Years later I had Trend Bike Source build a custom Morales Pro Flat that cost $1300. I absolutely hated it bc the geometry made pulling links I had totally dialed for years nearly impossible. If at all possible I suggest test riding a bike before you buy it, or at least ask other riders that have one what their opinion of the bike is. Just because it's the most expensive doesn't mean it's the best!!!

I’m 51 years old, in the 80’s my best friend was sponsored by SE and we rode our bikes everywhere everyday, I had a mongoose that got stolen, saved up got a GT, damned if that didn’t get ripped. pitfalls of living in Detroit, ended up with a Redline I had for a few years got older sold it, but I still love BMX and freestyle, I tune in to these videos to see what’s new now. my GT cost me 599.00 in 86, which I thought was crazy expensive. my buddy got his free he was sponsored, we would race Waterford a lot, he even raced at the Pontiac silver dome a few times. good to see young dudes still rippin and runnin. 👍🏻

I started riding in the early 90s and started working at a shop in the early 00s and got my first bike for $189, it was a Huffy Supercharger race bike that I decked out w/ all Primo parts and Sun BFR rims and it road great, just different geometry from street bikes which helped my bunny hops.... Later I went to an old DK frame then after that I got an Eastern Dragon 3 w/ some Eastern cranks, Eastern Slim Forks and Stolen Cell Bars and I still ride it now. I'd like to get some new wheels but I can't get hubs in 48h anymore so I'd have to change to 36h rims and hubs... But then I could also get a freecoaster to try out but I think I'd prefer cassette because I like the pedal pressure feeling, or I'm just old. 😂

sc is the best. when I ordered my bike as a Xmas present for myself, I called got to talk to BK to set it up left side drive, it only took one phone call to someone who was on vacation to get it done. I still wish I would have had him sign it. so if you want or need a bike don't be afraid to call SC bicycles and ask them for what you want, they will accommodate you and are very helpful.

My favorite bike back in the day was a traded frame. Pretty sure it was a DK, had layers and layers of spray paint on it, and pieced together parts. Kink 3 piece, their super thick sprocket and chain, primo head set and Moe bars, decent triple wall rims and tires, mostly out of junk/part bins of my buddies. I maybe had $100 in it all and rode the ever living mess out of it. A expensive bike might last a little longer than a cheap one, but it's more the rider and style that says how long it'll last. I picked up a Eastern Ace of Spades and literally destroyed it within a year of "recovery" riding and it was $900 out the door

Back when I was a decent rider, I always rode beat up, undialed bikes, some with lots of used parts. Did some really good riding on basically trash. I've seen dudes shred some really garbage bikes. Having a proper dialed bike with reliable parts helps, but it's not a true requirement. Ride what you've got, and don't worry about who says what about it. Rise above and show em all what's up. Obviously, the more you pay, typically, will get you a stronger full 4130 frame, fork, and bars, and a higher quality parts package. All beneficial when you've taken your riding past the beginner stages. Nathan Williams, for example, would destroy the wheels and snap a frame that is Tri-moly with a cheap parts package. Buy what you can afford that suits your level of riding. The rider makes the rider, not the bike makes the rider. Remember that, and you'll be good.

I always had hand me down parts and bikes. RARELY were things brand new. I had backflips, a 720, and tailwhips under my belt, all learned on a given bike. Everything rattled, but it never stopped me.

It's never too late! There's a lot of older folks who ride and can shred! A few years back, I decided I wanted to get into bmx flatland .. and I ended up finding this channel and was totally hooked! I don't ride as much as I'd like because of work and southeast texas just gets too fricken hot to ride. But that's just an excuse. I'm only 37 ( turning 38 at the end of the month ) and I wish I would've gotten started when I was younger. But yeah, I feel it's never too late to get into a hobby. Being older, it just takes a while longer to recover. But being athletic like you mentioned, I think you'll do well. I spend $450ish on a complete 20" bike, full chromoly frame, forks etc., all that you need. I upgraded some parts along the way, now I have 3 fully built bikes lol. Ugh, I just need to get my ass outside and ride! Good luck!

Start with a budget and only upgrade what breaks. No point spending more on something like cranks if you're just starting out Unless they break. Also my biggest advice i can give regardless of budget or skill level is to aim for double walled rims
@oldguyrips535
@oldguyrips535 2 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I did. I started with my Stranger complete (because it had full sealed bearings all around, double walled rims, and was what I could afford). I've changed the pedals, grips, tires, added pegs, and also swapped out the rear wheel for a freecoaster. I don't ride a ton, and I'm still learning stuff, but it's actually a solid bike for me. Would I like to build up a $1500+ bike? Sure. Do I need it? No.

@@rhyshutchin5 I agree with this completely I've been riding bmx for 12 years now started with a gt fly as my first bike age 13. Rode that for a few years until I needed something larger frame wise so I got a 2013 wethepeople zodiac complete. Only thing I upgraded was a longer frame after a few years as I outgrew the zodiak frame and replaced parts as they broke. Had that same bike for for the last 9 years still going strong other than a set of bars and forks which I broke.

That's such a cool trick. I haven't been riding much due to the flu but I went for my first ride in 6 weeks on Sunday and felt great, was really enjoying jumping speed humps (still my favourite thing since I first learnt to jump. It's like an invitation to jump, a perfect little jump in the middle of the road. 😜) then my back went out on me on Monday morning and sadly will have to wait a few days for that to get better to ride again. Speaking of complete bikes, my Division Brookside 20 incher has been holding up a treat. Super strong and it has to be, I weigh 126kg (2.2 pounds per kilogram if you want to do the maths) but I love that bike. It practically lives in my car during the week so I can ride it after work. It's actually improved my skills on my bigger bikes. Now I am 47 years old and doubt I will be doing anything as huge as Matty but it's really impressed me that Division. So I agree with Scotty, those complete bikes are really great for introductions to BMX or coming back to it.

Ok well let me tweak my previous comment. It was made literally 1 sec in. The quality of bikes you have at your shop is a lot different then what I was thinking. I meant like CHEAAAPPPP bikes. Either way I’m almost to the point at my age( which I’ve stated in previous videos) where I’m considering building another bike. Watching the videos y’all make gets me pumped. I’m ready to come up there and ride with y’all. I wasn’t ever on a pro level but was still a good street rider. Maybe I should get in shape and Matt and I should go head to head on the street, but you calling all shots. I absolutely loved yesterday’s videos where Matt and Vinny were recreating your game of bike against Cory from back in the day. I can’t lie you inspired me a lot when I was young and now watching Matt progress has me pumped, wanting to come out of retirement lol.

I remember having the most basic Haro Backtrail and beating the piss out of it. The guy that used to always be on the trails would take any bike and hit the huge sets. He could do it on a $300 bike or $2000 bike. Obviously over time, superior parts will hold up. But anyone can jump on any bike and shred.

My first bike was a Kink Gap. Loved it. Rode it till it fell apart. Realistically you shouldnt spend more than 300 on your first bmx.

The bike can make a slight difference on how well you can ride because the feel of more expensive bike just makes it feel better to ride. Especially if you go from.a department store bike to a bike shop bike

What bmx bike would u recommend for someone who has experience riding flat ground but hasnt rode in a few years due to finance complications, is 5'11, 120 lbs, performs best on street and flat ground, and wants to have a sick setup?

I’m 1 second in, and gonna say this. As far as skill goes NO, there isn’t anything that’s gonna make you a better rider other then PERSISTENCE, PRACTICE, TOUGH and FIT BODY, and HEART. However having the best is the flip side let’s be real, cheaper quality just isn’t gonna hold up or last. Either way just have fun and grow the sport. That’s what it’s about.

My first bmx bike was a 2013 kink curb before that it was only Walmart bikes. The curb is the best beginner bike imo over time I ended up bending the wheels and snapping the frame but it’s hitense steel so if you evolve so should your bike!

Just a couple days ago I was riding my elite bmx bike and hit a pothole and I fractured my wrist in the process also my bmx the frame snapped 😞 i love going to the skatepark and making videos of me on my bike so I can figure out what I’m doing wrong and I can’t anymore so ye

depends. if a more expensive bike or bike with the parts u want make you ride more, you will become better. if you trust your bike to do wild drops and not brake, you will do more stunts with confidence. so yes it might make you better.
