After being involved with BMX since 1995 and owning a bike shop since 2007 I finally built a wheel up from scratch and it wasn't easy! With the help of Matty we are doing a how to build up a wheel video showing the step by step process so you can build up your own wheels!

Hey Scott, great video. Just wanted to share a tip from my many years of shop experience. If you do the "spoke-head-out" spokes on both flanges first (before starting the "spoke-head-in", or "crossing" spokes), you won't have to bend the non-drive side "spoke-head-out" spokes to get them in. With both sets of "spoke-head-out" spokes installed, there is still enough slack in the wheel to spin the hub in the "forward" direction before starting the "crossing" or "spoke-head-in" spokes. I find it saves a bit of effort and you don't have to bend the spokes nearly as much, especially on smaller wheels. Hope this can help you on your next wheel! I find that working on bikes is therapeutic, especially now that I no longer do it as a job. Would love to see more videos like this. Cheers!

I had a friend who lived across the street from me who built professional race wheels and he taught me, used all the same equipment. Was very therapeutic to build wheels

This was fascinating! You’ve encouraged me to try something that I’ve never done before and thought I couldn’t do because of my hand coordination. I have a lot of neurological issues and it’s very hard to do fine motor activities of any kind.

Reminds me years ago when Albe's put a challenge out to see if anyone could beat their wheel builder in the time it took to build a wheel. Turbo is a heck of a bike tech, and he is freakishly fast at building a wheel. Curious how quick BK builds a wheel, and if he could revive the challenge to beat Turbo's time.

Hey Scott.. ngl.. it’s been hard for me to watch the riding videos without you jamming in em… happy to hear you talking amazingly and not being out of breath and moving your arms so much better and your back… it’s great man… please make another update or video of you riding, I just love seeing you ona bike man, you’re a real success story an I’ve been here since before you jumped the r35, and when Corey bodied himself doing the flare or whatever it was on that stepped up quarter in the corner of the incline club I believe it was called. Been watching for years man..

I have been waiting for this video since the first video on the channel. I can honestly say it was well worth the wait. More informative videos are the staple of having fun in BMX. Nothing that bums me out more than not knowing how to fix my bike. Taking the initiative to learn is very important and worth every second.

This video is absolute gold. I've been riding for 17 years now and I never could figure out how to true my rims. I actually made my own stand with an old set of bars a stem and some forks with some zip ties to see where the rim is at. I just couldn't figure it out and always made my wheels worse.

I figured it out on my own in the 80s. Trial and error and trued with the brake pad. LOL! Never had a problem.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this! This is simply just the side of riding you don't see if you aren't a rider or if you don't repair or build your own equipment! Really shows you how much there is to learn and teach yourself about! Even with things you might have been using every day and not really paying attention to just how much skill went into it.

Great video scotty been researching this alot lately getting ready to build by first custom wheel set very soon. Only one thing to add. When you start drop the first spoke into the hub hole that is directly next to the hub logo. This way when the wheel is fully laced you can read the logo by looking thru the valve stem hole. Doesent effect the wheel build but it shows forethought and good execution. Also its wise to prep the spoke threads with spoke compound or in a pinch linseed oil to prevent them from getting loose over time. ✌

Back in the mid 90s I won a set of TNT Revolver hubs at the NBL Grands in Louisville and never did figured out how to lace them myself. It's a lot harder than it looks!
