My Mother is having an absolute nightmare of a time with her 2012 Chevy Cruze. We're talking ongoing engine stalling/shut down on low mileage, babied, and fully maintained by Chev Dealership car bought from new. Been giving headaches since out of warranty, every time it goes in for a repair it comes back with 3 new problems. I personally own 3 Mazdas and an Infiniti and am pushing her to get into a Mazda herself. Why is the 1.4 turbo version of the 2012 Cruze so damn terrible?

Scotty the 1.4TSI is hands down the most reliable VW motor right now. Also has 180 tq at sub 2000 rpm. Literally just put gas in it, change the oil at 5k and use VW approved oil (I use liqui moly only) and do Spark Plugs at 40k w/ air filter and you'll have this motor last you 200k EASY. I won't doubt people can get 250k-300k out of it. Also you can literally do the timing belt by reaching into the engine bay. It's cake. This is THE best VW motor since the 2.5l NA. No offense Scotty but this is genuinely propaganda.

Certainly the cheapest of the German options and the best option in my opinion. I got mine during a "sales event" and managed to buy mine for 15,500 before tax (Not a base model either, it's an SE). Gas milage and emissions is king, less space to fill, less emissions, same or better hp, but nearly no room for valves in a 4° slop or more. They could make it easier to change, but you have to pull spark plugs to set TDC cylinder 1 so just keep it away from redline, and run the heater on low in log drivethru lines or traffic to keep pressure off the pump seals.

1.4tsi/1.5tsi/2.0tsi all pretty good we'll built engines in well built cars. VW says lifespan is about 200k miles and generally they make that without problems after that they can go for longer sometimes. However keep in mind it will simply wear out from the turbo strain and break so just buy a new car by then. Thing is though in the usa people drive more then here in Europe. In Europe gas prices are 3.5 times higher aswell. So it makes sense to produce these engines because of gas mileage and people here tend to not drive 300-400k miles with one car anyway since that is 30 years of driving for most people.

Not only that, but the best that I could find online is that the belt "should" be changed at 150k. That's 10-12 years of average mileage, and the first major maintenance cost in that time. Kinda funny how he was hating on the whole timing belt thing. I’ve had 3 mark IV VR6 VW’s and they all had a chain. Put 200k on one and still didn’t change chain. But in response to having a belt now like everyone else.... if you are smart and keep ontop of your car just check out the belt for cracks or dry rotting... or just more engine noise than usual.... but... haha... you might have to wait until you got 190k on it for it to go. Would be my guess. My buddy just got one and they look so easy to work on as well. Alternator right there. I’m no mechanic, but work on what I can and I have driven vw since I could drive. They have never let me down!

The real question is: what will break first? the belt or the turbo. Whichever one goes going to be too expensive to fix. Even if you replace the belt at 100K, you'll have to keep in mind that the turbo will go soon after or vice versa.
@REALBanannaman
@REALBanannaman 2 жыл бұрын
Have not heard of a turbo going out on these under 100k, would be surprised. And if it did blow, the battery is the likely culprit. When the battery goes, the coolant pump that cools the turbo after shutdown does not run.

"I just found the worst new car ever made" Honestly, it seems like you really liked it. You talked about possible/potential problems but nothing is currently wrong with the car. You were actually complimenting the car. My first VW was a 2001 Golf 1.8t (stick) and it drove like new the entire time i owned it and it never left me stranded. Sold it with 130k miles on it and it held its value amazingly well. Replaced it with a new 2013 GTI (stick) and that one still drives like new. Currently has 82k miles and has never given me any problems. Both cars were fun, fun, fun. Admit it Scotty, you liked that VW.

Automobile reliability is directly proportional to how well a person takes care of their car a stich in time saves nine.... many people think since they bought an expensive vehicle they shouldn't have to do anything to them it should just be ever ready... that's just not realistic since everyone has been following the planned obsolescence mindset of designing years ago the mentality was build it strong so the customer doesn't have to buy that again That changed a long long time ago

I own a VW touran and live in UK. They are okey when they are all new and have the manufacturers warranty. But they all are the worst car to work with when they do break down. You can't do anything yourself. Bloody torx everywhere. Plastic is brittle and breaks easily. Big big money pits. The parts aren't cheap. Went to dealer to get some front brake pads. Nearly died of heart attack when I heard the price. Bloody hell. How much do you charge in labour? Next car will definitely be a Mazda or Toyota. At least you don't need torx socket set to work with them.

I can tell you why parts are so expensive, by personal experience. I managed to crack one of my rear light when reversing. My fault, it was foggy in the area I live. It would be a MOT failure and police officer will pull you on the side if you have a broken rear lights if driving at night. Went to dealer and asked how much is one of the rear light unit complete. 100£ including Vat. That was an experience mistake. Pads front for my VW touran was 89 £ including Vat. Dealer at VW usually have an 80-100£ hourly rate. They aren't cheap. More horror story to come if you like to hear.

Would you fit a reconditioned one in for me. They said. No sorry. We only fit new stuff in so it's under our warranty. So how much is a new gearbox for my VW touran? 3000£ not including labour. You're joking. The gearbox cost more than what the car is worth. Went to an independent garage and got fixed for 800£.
