Amen! The high oil change intervals is mostly marketing. Cars are more complex than ever. Think of all the turbos, direct injection and Variable valve timing. There are so many nooks and crannies that can be filled with dirt and sludge. Unless your driving involves only highway cruising with modest outside temperatures of 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) or so, most of us drive severe service on our cars!

Former Honda tech- definitely would agree that more frequent full synthetic oil changes on turbo engines would be well advised. On the 1.5L turbo specifically Honda has been having issues with injectors leaking gas and diluting the engine oil and setting dtcs. The 1.5s also have an emerging issue with the head gaskets springing very small coolant leaks internally into the combustion chamber and causing cold start misfires when mild, and non stop dead cylinder misfires when the issue is more advanced- but that’s a separate discussion 😒

another tip, if you are driving on the highway, when You are going to stop, let Your engine idle for a few minutes, this cools the turbo down some. so the oil don't get cooked in that hot turbo and ruin it.

Great advice, I have been always followed since owning a Turbo car back in the early nineties. Another good tip, when you first start your engine always let it idle for around 30 seconds before driving off to allow the Turbo to be sufficiently lubricated by oil which can also ruin it if not done.

My youngest son bought an old boxy Volvo station wagon that had a turbo with 110,000 on the OD. He got it for cheap due to having electrical gremlins that the owner couldn't afford to have found and fixed. Sonny did that on his own then installed an old Franz toilet paper bypass filter to keep the motor oil cleaner to prolong oil changes. He used a full synthetic and added a quart each time he changed the TP roll at 10,000 miles. He put another 200,000 miles on the car before the turbo went out. He didn't care to buy a new or used turbo so sold the beast thru craigslist to a buyer 1500 miles away that needed a body since his restored wagon was totaled in an accident.

I have a 3.5 EcoBoost and i never go over 5k miles. Mobil1 full synthetic and Napa Gold oil filter (Wix). Also added a catch can which helps keep your plugs clean which also helps the overall performance.

Love that Ford put a turbo charger on it’s 1 liter Ford Fiesta three cylinder engines! Was at the dealer and a technician said he is kept busy with the CVT transmissions, the wet timing belt and turbochargers failing. He pointed out the turbo and it was quite cute as it’s really small. Reminded me of the 1 liter diesel Daihatsu Charade many years ago when it came to America and left! I’ll stick with a my non-turbo engine and save money in the long run. Repairs and replacement are really expensive.

A few months a I was having car trouble. While my car was being fixed, I rented a Malibu with the eco tech one week and a v6 charger the next week. I couldn’t believe the charger got better gas mileage than that eco tech (4 cylinder turbo), especially since I was driving the charger more.

The recommended oil change interval for “hard service,” or whatever they call it, is much shorter than the “standard” interval. Many of us drive mostly shorter trips, which is hard service and requires the more frequent oil change intervals. And the turbo also increases wear. I just bought a turbocharged car and plan to observe or exceed the 5,000-mile intervals for oil and filter, using full synthetic oil.

Change your oil regularly and give a cool down time before turning off the engine after being in boost. I'm not sure why turbo vehicles don't have a turbo timer built into the program. You don't want to cook the oil in the turbo.

Thanks SCOTTY KILMER. I have a little bitty old ford Ranger with a 2.3 four.I went to look at the NEW Ranger and I noticed that it had the same exact 2.3 liter 4 cyl. Additionally it had a turbo pushing the power up from 105 B.H.P to 270 B.H.P , they super sized the truck and huffed the motor. I walked away and now you have stated what I theorized. Sometimes slow and steady is the best way.

You’re 100% correct Scotty that’s why I like my old school V8. Take care properly they will run forever. There are also a lot of great old engines for instance I had a great Ford 300 straight six that ran forever. And I had the Chrysler 225 slant six that you just could not kill. This is just a few of the legendary engines of the past. They were much simpler engines in the past. And easy to work on.

So correct. I had a 1988 Mazda 626 with a turbo. Eventually gave it to my son. Body rusted out, but he found another body, and put the turbo engine into it. Unfortunately car was in an acccident when engine had about 205,000 miles on it. Engine still good. We changed that oil 3500 miles since engine (and car) was new. It sure paid (BTW that had a standard shift). Still wished I had that car. Great advice.

Its more to do with rpm, smaller engines tend to rev higher so that produces more wear, my 2.2L turbo diesel Mazda is over 200k milies still going strong. Cruising at 1700-1900rpm just isnt as much wear as a similar gas engine. Yes regular oil changes at 3-4k miles helps a lot

Most of the long haul trucks and locomotives are turbo charged. They run for many many many miles. Many if not most aircraft piston engines are either turbo or supercharged. So, forced induction or not, it all comes down to whether the engine was built to last, or built to fill a price point or a government interference point and then fail.

Well do also keep in mind 18 wheelers use diesel which is already more efficient than gas. Diesel trucks were choking out in high altitudes so back in the day in NA form so owners would fit turbos and superchargers so they could continue to haul across mountainous high altitude areas. Of course the benefit is Diesels love forced induction and made 'em stronger even at sea level

The thing with building for mass production is that there are going to be imperfections within the engine causing it to wear prematurely as is if you want a car or motor built to last you will pay a lot more only for quality assurance

Turbo engines will always be less reliable than an n/a engine. Bearings go bad, seals go bad, vgt vanes stick. Diesel engines can runaway and blow up if the turbo seals fail. Turbo failure can also ingest metal into the engine. Yes you can have reliable service from a turbo but it needs more care/attention.

@@anitalongass4720 No. My 2006 Saab 9-3 I sold to someone I know and today after 17 years it now has 260,000 miles and the original powertrain still going. It does burn a little oil now but that is expected on any engine after a quarter of a million miles.

Thanks for the tips Scotty. We just bought a 2015, and don't laugh, Buick encore. It's had two new turbos put on it since we bought it. GM makes crummy parts. They don't last anytime. But we will definitely take your advice and change the oil every 5000 mi with synthetic oil

I specifically avoided turbocharged Ecoboost engines when I bought my 2014 F150 with normally aspirated 3.7L V6. It had 19,000 miles when I bought it as a lease return in 2015. It now has 318,000 miles. Same engine, same transmission, same rear axle. A few minor little new parts, tires, belts hoses, batteries, brakes over the years. Oil and filter changes happen when I have time, and I never use synthetic oil. I basically keep oil and water in it and it just keeps on going. I'm a mechanic myself. Like most mechanics, my own vehicle gets attention last. Never been a powerhouse but it's a damn good truck.

With these new types of engines….interference engines….most manufacturers recommend using full synthetic and changing it often.,,and using the light weight oil because the parts inside the engine fit so tightly together and heat up that much hotter, it’ll bake traditional oil onto the cylinder walls creating friction and then damages the internals leading to engine failure…a lot of them also have the vvt technology in them which uses a solenoid that contains very fine screens that the oil flows through and when chunks of debris get into the engine oil…it clogs the screens in the vvt and blows them Out causing the solenoid to leak and then loses plowed because it can’t properly engage that solenoid/cam…I bought an 05 trailblazer with the inline 6 that has the vvt in it….the mechanic I went to told me to never use synthetic oil because it’ll damage the valves…so I used traditional oil one time…the engine ran like it was a diesel so I took out the owners manual and read it from cover to cover and sure enough it recommended using synthetic oil only…..runs much nicer now

Scotty my 2004 ~ 2.3 L ~ 5 cyl Volvo V70 has a very small Turbo it has 225000 miles on it and gets great gas mileage and the motor burns no oil. I change the oil every 5000 miles it is 20 years old and runs great it is on its 2nd turbo charger but that is still pretty good for 225000 miles and I put an aftermarket turbo on it that was 500 dollars cheaper then the Volvo one I think I still have great car and a good deal I only paid 2000 dollars for the car 4 years ago

I had a 2013 Subaru STI with a 2.5l turbocharged 4 cylinder that got worse gas mileage than the 2000 Trans Am with a 5.7L LS1 V8 that I traded in to get it. By 60,000 miles the STI went through 3 engines, 2 clutches, 2 turbos and a catalytic converter. I replaced the oil every 3000 miles. The Trans Am never had a single mechanical problem while I owned it.

People used to mock 80s, 90s, and early 2000s GM vehicles for bad fit and finish, falling headliners, clear coat and paint that would fall off in chunks (especially late 80s and to mid 90s), but in reality, they were mechanically fairly reliable and cheap to acquire parts for and fix.

Am I hearing correctly that the 2023 VW Jetta with the turbo on the 1.4 engine develops over 150 HP and gets over 52 MPG highway when geared with the 6 speed manual? That car must be a blast to drive, priced around $23,000 new. I like manuals, they are very reliable.

Turbos are very hard on motor oil because the exhaust has to be pushed though them. and the heat breaks down the motor oil. there are other issues with turbos also. the impellers in a turbo spin at very high RPMs in the ten thousands. and the impellers have been known to come apart. and also because they spin at very high RPMs they have a high rate of bearing failure. so turbos aren't all they are cracked up to be.

I’m getting tired of all the turbo hate in the comments here, I repeat just get a reliable turbo car, change the oil every 3k miles like a normal person. I have a wrx with 200k miles on the motor and everything else, turbo still works great as does the engine. High rpm doesn’t make things break faster when oiled right. Lots of parts in your car spin at around 10k rpm actually because of gear ratios. Turbos are reliable when done right, they provide better power for smaller displacement, they are more fuel efficient. There is only one downside to a turbo engine (high performance specifically) and that’s premium high octane gas

I am hobbyst mechanic and work free with a mechanic friend. Oo man, We worked in a turbo, the oil pipes were all clogged the oil was like a stone, and the owner complaining about the car, LoL change the oil. Personally. I avoid cars with turbo.

5,000 I wouldn't wait that long on a turbo. Do it at 3,000. They run hotter and faster You also shouldn't shut off a turbo engine after driving. Let the oil lubricate everything at idle at least a few minutes before shutting it down. C'mon Scotty give the people all the information

Same goes for start up on cold days. Give the engine time to reach temperature. Also if you do a lot of really short trips give it a nice long drive every 4th day or so. Especially nowadays - fuel quality is not what it once was, carbon build up is increasingly a fact of life.

If you are running a semi synthetic or full synthetic, which any modern turbo charged motor is except for certain diesel motors, there is absolutely no reason to change it at 3k and You would just be wasting money. 5,000 absolutely. Yea you are actually wrong about this. Yes some turbo charged motors run hotter, but they are designed for it and changing the oil sooner then a N/A is correct but at 3k miles is not any kind of added benefit.

It's not necessary to let it sit after driving, unless you drove it extremely hard. Thermal siphoning will cool the turbo for you once the car is off.

Most manufacturers have mitigated the problems that come with turbochargers. I'd say it's good practice to change any vehicles oil at 5k mile intervals. Please buy quality filters,not the really cheap orange ones. OEM is good,as is puralator,napa,and a few others.

I believe that you should let it idle for a minute to let the turbo slow down and stop before switching off, especially if you've been driving fast. It needs oil continually pumped into the bearing and with the engine not running this won't happen. 👍

Preach it! When I worked at a Lincoln dealership, I would put 5k and 1 year on the oil change stickers and tell customers not to follow the maintenance light or the owner manual because of this. The service reps and shop foreman would question me about this and this is why. I had a 3.5L Ecoboost motor with about 14k miles come in and they never changed the oil. Had engine noise, engine light, and ran rough. Took off the valve covers, and the front cover, had over 1/8 inch of sludge over everything. Their brand new vehicle had the warranty voided due to lack of maintenance. There are too many small oil passages to get clogged, and it will have constant issues without a complete teardown and cleaning.

Actually a turbo doesn't actually give you better fuel economy; in fact if you go heavy on the throttle all the time, you will actually consume more fuel then if you got a bigger engine in the first place. BUT a turbo will get more power out of a smaller engine; and if you cruise just below your turbo area, then you can get lower fuel consumption and still have plenty of burnout power.

A small engine with a turbo is good if you want a burst of power like for passing. If you want to more power over a long period then turbos are not the best fit. Examples of this are long hill climbs or towing or hauling significant loads.

Aside from turbo and first 30k miles I change my oil about every 20k miles 2 trucks over 300k miles. 2000 corolla 220k. Most problems vehicles will have will generally not be engine oil related

The color is carbon black, which is soft and harmless. Diesel engines produce a ton of it, which is why their oil is black 5 minutes after you put fresh stuff in. If the additive package is intact and it isn't acidic, it still has life in it.

I had a subaru WRX for about 9 years and about 110,000 miles when I got rid of it the original turbo and lower end was all original with no issues even though it was during the Era of them failing at 70k back in 2004

Yeah what they said.y Mitsubishi Outlander says it can go 10,000 miles between oil changes. Although after 4,000the oil begins to smell a little musty; and after 7,000 it really smells like burnt oil. So yeah I changed my oil as close as possible to 5000 miles.

Turbo diesels are very common here in Europe. A typical car here has a 2 liter straight four turbo diesel with 200 hp and 400 NM of torque. You can even get a BMW with a 3 liter straight six with four turbochargers producing 400 hp 💪🏻

5000 miles is roughly 8000km. Unless your car has been heavily tuned and power level increased, changing oil that often is simply waste of money. I have Volvo S60 T5, factory interval is 20000km (~12500 miles) and that's perfectly fine with quality oil ( I use Mobil 1 New life 5W-40). More important is, don't put load on cold engine, don't go full throttle with high gear, low rpm and always let turbo cool after driving.

My mechanic just told me if hydraulic steering goes wrong, it's usually just a few hundred (Au)dollars to fix, but if electronic steering goes wrong, it'll cost Au$2000 to replace it!

Turbos have been used forever dude, I had an old saab from the 80s with a turbo. It’s not a new failure point, it’s how you get power with less displacement, an engine built to handle a turbo will do so very well and be reliable for many many miles, I have a 2002 wrx (with turbo from factory) with 200k miles on everything, it all works great! Turbos are great things.

Mr. Kilmer, I just Leased a 2024 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe. With the engine not being a choice you can make... it's a 2.0L 4cyl turbo. I'm certain I'll be doing an oil change in 6 months. Do you see any issues if I switch from whatever they have in it from the factory to Amsoil Lubricants? And should I use an oil specifically made for turbos? Another overlooked trait with turbo cars is the excess heat they create. When you complete your trip, it's always a good idea to let it idle for about 30 seconds so it can cool off. The hot oil can burn up your turbo seals over time, causing premature turbo failiure. It's more prevelant in some vehicles (like my Mazdaspeed 6) than others. In the end, I prefer my '93 Legacy L with the NA 2.2L as a daily driver.

I wanted a new Chevy Colorado and decided to look into what it had to offer. Was hugely disappointed when I saw that NO models had anything but a 2.7L turbo'd engine in it. Nope. Changed my mind. No truck should ever have a turbocharged 4 cylinder in it in my opinion. If small pickups (Ranger, S10, Mazda B-series, etc.) could ever be made again, then I'd be okay with that, but something mid-sized and up? No.

I'm driving company vehicle, it's a5 door caravan with 1000 cc engine with turbo charger ( total mileage - abt 15 kkm). Average consumption - 8L/100km in mixed driving condition ( 40% open roads, 60% city streets). In general I am satisfied how it runs but everybody say it will die out fast. Especially bcs our car fleet manager say we should change oil on 30 000kkm (?!) because thats what dealership advised. I'm not sure what to do- should I listen to him or to pay witj my own money for oil change. It doesnt cost a fortune...

Scotty thanks!! Yeah the extra heat and design from the Turbo will wear and engine down quick . I think even 3000 miles with full synthetic may give the Turbo engine a chance to make it live longer . However compared to a conventional engine with less added heat and less moving parts and turbo the conventional should last longer. Again , Thank You Sir !! I was just looking at a Subaru Ascent and turned off by the Turbo .

Get it, turbos aren’t bad. I swear so many people here know nothing about cars, I personally own a wrx with 200k miles on it, all original parts on the engine, change the oil frequently with full synthetic and you have nothing to worry about. The heat from a turbo isn’t the hottest part of the engine, you know oil is there right where the gas explodes right? Also oil coolers are a thing that exist on lots of cars, takes that high temperature oil and cools it right down. Not to mention the only heated part of the engine from the turbo is the turbo itself, the air coming out of it goes through a cooling system before going back into the engine
