If you do end up going to a dealership, never pay their asking price! The listing price for the used car I bought was $12,000, and I offered $8,800. They called me every day saying, "There's a lot of interest in the vehicle, it's going to sell soon, we can't take your offer as it sits." Two weeks later, I'm sitting in the car after paying $8,800. It's a matter of mind games for some of these people. Don't let desperation influence you!

Some more great tips I learned after buying and selling dozens of vehicles- 1) Be patient and start looking early. Don't take the first deal that comes along unless it's the "right" one. Don't wait until a buy is urgent and you're in a hurry. 2) Take another set of eyes with you. Even if it's a person who knows nothing about cars, you'll look like you know what you're doing and the seller is more liable to take you seriously. 3) Bring cash and don't be afraid to start low. Don't go too low or you'll turn the seller off but make a fair offer and stick to it. 4) At the same time, be prepared to pay a fair price for a good product. 5) Bring some business cards and tell the seller your offer stands and to give you a call if he changes his mind. Again, that shows him you're serious.

You missed one point. Buy a car they made a large number of. It drives the used prices down on better quality cars (for the price). They usually have more of the bugs worked out so they actually are more reliable. Finally there are more aftermarket parts and accessories available at lower costs. Car often used as fleet cars for taxis would often be in this category.

I'm in the process of buying a used car and still deciding between a dealership or Private Seller. With Dealership, you should be able to get a Pre-Purchase Inspection. With Private Seller, they most likely will not let you. As many videos as you watch, it still will be different to inspect a car on your own via a private seller.

Rust is HELL. Stay away from rust and don't think "eh it's just a tiny spot". My first car was a $300 1973 Chrysler Newport, affectionately known as ‘The Enterprise’.The interior had seen better days, and the rear quarters were rusty. But I dropped a $600 Alpine stereo into it (not surprisingly, my Dad questioned my logic on that particular decision), and felt like I had the coolest car in town. I had it for 4 years, and it was bulletproof. Other than regular maintenance, all I ever did was replace the front u-joints once, and the muffler, after a couple of years. She had the mighty 400 c.i. I flipped the lid on the air filter cover, so she just roared when I stepped on it. She passed everything but a gas station. I’ve had many cars since, but if I live to be a 100, it’ll always be my favourite.

I paid $125 for a Chevy lumina that I drove for 8 years. I didn't do anything to it no oil changes just kept the fluid stopped off no tune-ups nothing. When it finally died I found a truck that had been sitting in a barn for like 3 years covered in Moss the mold and only had 130,000 miles on it. I went and knocked on the door and offered the guy $1,000, he wanted 1300, I told him it was going to cost me at least 400 to get all the Moss and mold off of it. So I took a thousand. It runs like a champ. Just got the AC fixed on it and put a 250 amp alternator on it and I am converting the radiator fan to electric.

I just bought a 2000 Toyota Camry that's in ok condition... A neighbor bought it for his daughter until she made enough to buy her a nearly brand new car and I got the Camry for $500 had to clean it good inside and out, steering wheel cover, a couple of inner door handles, an electric window regulator and a battery... I found 4 really good used tires for $100 ... It has a little over 250,000 miles but it runs pretty good so far... It's probably my hundredth car in my life 🤣 and it's my first Toyota.. I've always wanted one 😁

I have a 2006 350Z. Literally have had it for 5+ years and only have replaces the starter and cam sensors . You can go a long ways if you change your fluids regularly. Zs are a mfker to work on sometimes though as the engine compartment is quite small.

I got a 1998 volvo s70 glt with 160k on it for $700. All it needed was a new back window, and was covered in plastic. I went to the junkyard, pulled one out, went to the window shop, and ended up using that car for another 5 years. In total, I spent under $1k for a car that ran half a decade.

I paid $600 for my GMC Envoy XUV SLT V8 and a 2004 Grand Cherokee that ran and drove but was rusty. The Envoy though is 9.5/10 interior and exterior and I've been offered $7k for it. Some numbskull "mechanic" told the previous owner the 5.3 was bad. That must explain the 20k miles I've driven it. Battery had an internal short.

I had a great car, a 2000 Toyota Echo, but the main reason I sold it is because while I was replacing wheel bearings, pressing the old ones out with a hydraulic press (standard tool to use for this kind of job), the steering knuckle the bearing was pressed into broke. The worst part was that it wasn't a part that was available new. I _had_ to go to a junk yard to get a used part. So I opted to sell it because I didn't want to be in a position where I needed a part that wasn't available, rendering the car inoperable because of one small part that couldn't be found.
