The F150 is great. Towed a minivan on dolly, and the f150 with the 5.something V8 is a beast. Although I was gentle with it, it felt like a charm and very soft for towing. Fords are mechanic and customer friendly. Not expensive to fix. By the way, thanks Mr. Scotty Kilmer on sharing about the pricey swap on a Tundra. I guess I'll stick on buying a good-usedF150 in a near future.

Make sure you DO NOT get one with the 5.4L 3 valve V8 it’s one of the worst motors ever built. Get the worst mileage of any truck I’ve ever owned motors go out frequently and are extremely expensive to replace, I like my f150 and I’ve owned plenty of all three brand trucks, I’m not a fanboy of any brand and I don’t hate any brand, all three brands are good they all have strong years and bad years. This is an honest opinion do not for any reason but the f150 with the 5.4L 3 valve (even though you find them for sale everywhere for super cheap)

Good Review Scotty, I used to be a loyal Silverado enthusiast. Back in “13, I looked at all the equivalents of the F150 in depth and also reviewed the recalls for all. The Silverado’s list of recalls was far too numerous to even be considered as viable. If you were going to work the truck hard as a contractor probably would, the Toyota was built like a tank but fuel mileage sucked. I went with the F-150 FX2 with a 5.0. They tried to sell me an Ecoboost but I knew the V8 was the most reliable. 5 yrs later, everyone asks to buy my truck when I go to sell it. They just don’t realize, I have no intentions of ever selling it. Best truck I’ve ever owned.

I just rolled over 260,000 kms on my 2013 F150 5.0. It was my first new vehicle and Id break down its usage as approximately 30% on terrible dirt/mud roads in the oil patch, 50% on my long highway commutes, and 20% towing my 6800 lb 5th wheel through the BC mountains. Its my office and my daily driver. I did....ok with maintenance. I was young and dumb at first, and dragged out the oil changes a bit long. I've since wised up with that, and have done as much of my own work as possible - plugs, control arms and recently struts. A couple weeks ago I was having a crises, of my own making - the one fluid I never touched was the transmission fluid. So I read up about it obsessively and learned of the big debate around changing tranny fluid for the first time on high mileage vehicles. I went ahead and (nervously) had it done anyway, and its running like new again. I just got back from an annual 1800 km trip towing through BC and it didn't skip a beat. I did stop and let it idle once on a very long climb because the transmission hit 104, but it cooled quickly and away I went. I run full synthetic Amsoil and always premium when towing. I haven't been kind to my F150, but it has been an amazing vehicle. The only mechanical issue I had was a rear diff bearing at 220k, so that was rebuilt. Everything else is expected routine maintenance. If youre on the fence about an F150, just listen to Scotty, they have perfected these trucks.

You commented about starter location in a Tundra. I had a Honda CRV that needed a new starter. I couldn't find it. I crawled around under the CRV. Popped the hood. Looked through the fender wells. It just wasn't there. Turns out Honda hid it, just like in the Tundra, except this was a 4 cylinder, so you think it would be hard to hide. Nope. To change it, you had to remove the battery. Remove all of the air intake plastic and filter box. Then finally unbolt the intake manifold, which was hooked to life support with about a dozen hoses, then slide the manifold sideways across the front of the car into the open area formerly occupied by the air intake stuff and the battery. And there it was, in plain site, just like that Tundra starter.. It took me about 5 minutes to replace the starter and about 2 or 3 hours figuring out how to get to it and put it all back together. The engineers should be required by law to disassemble and reassemble brakes, starters, front end suspension components, radiators, heater motors, and all of the other common repair stuff on a dozen 10 year old vehicles that were driven in the rust rust belt, and do it on a 35 degree day in the wind out on a gravel driveway, before they even touch a computer to do their first design. They might fix a few of their own stupid designs if they were required to work on them first.
@drewb242
@drewb242 5 жыл бұрын
Well I doubt an engineer made the decision to put the starter there. But in any case yes very annoying. I have a 94 honda prelude. Starter is on the front bottom left side of the engine, easily accessible, 4 bolts, would likely take me ten minutes to replace.
@cm5896
@cm5896 5 жыл бұрын
@@drewb242 If not an engineer, who? That's what engineers do. They design things. The bean counters might have some influence in the cost to build the vehicle, as in "the engine can't cost more than $XXX.xx", but I doubt a bean counter, secretary, or janitor said "Hide the starter between the frame of the car and the intake manifold. They'll never think to look for it there". It's possible the Engineer or Engineering team that did the engine design designed everything except the starter location and were left with an area that allowed the starter to physically fit, but it was a horrible location, so they used it, but it was still an engineer that made that choice.

Yeah and Toyota rarely gets used for any real type of work either and yet the big 3 are not far away in reliability. That says alot right there. Look at which trucks are hauling trailers and/or loads. Here's a hint....it's not Tundra's. Whenever I see a Tundra it's empty and not pulling any trailer. I'm not hating or anything I'm just saying what I see. So of course it might be more reliable because it's not getting beat up or put to heavy work. Something to think about when you factor it in the reliability rating next time. Simply put there's alot of good reasons why the F150 sells like it does for so many years and that is that it's a great truck obviously !!!

Damn that's great to hear fellas! It's great to hear that these little rangers are still puttering along with such high milage. In 2015 I picked up a 2001 ranger edge 3.0l v6 5 speed manual trans.with 190000k miles on it and i have only put about 3000k miles on her I hardly drive her but little by little I been fixing her up. Just a few months ago I had the timing chain cover replaced because it was leaking antifreeze but next big fix will be the clutch and maybe the rear main seal because i think it's leaking oil.

Scotty's videos are some of the best at KZbin- MUCH appreciated. As a Tundra owner, one point I would make is that repairs are so rare that it could be argued that the higher cost of repairs for newer models isn't sufficient justification to favor the Fords (with more repairs needed, sooner vs a Tundra) over the tundras. Just my opinion, of course.

I never owned a truck, but when I found out Ford F-150 was lightweight aluminum body, I decided to get a 2017 F-150 XLT supercab 2WD with 5.0 Coyote V8. First new vehicle I ever purchased. I have had the truck for one year, and put 32,000 miles on it. There has not been a single "warranty repair" fault with this truck to date. Fuel economy on one trip meter, never reset since the truck was purchased is 20.5 MPG _average_ city/highway. This is excellent for a V8 truck. Aluminum body FTW. And the 5.0 sounds great, even with the factory single exhaust. 0 to 60 is in the low 5 second range... what more could you ask for from a 33,000 $ work/utility vehicle?

I put a lot of miles on my Trucks. I buy new F150's and get rid of them after 300k miles. Things start happening around the 300k mark or have for me. But friends that buy Chevy, spend a lot more in repairs than I do. I just keep the oil change. My current 2009 F150 has 180k miles on it. I had to change the brake pads at 120k miles with a lot of city driving. I changed the transmission fluid, radiator fluid, and spark plugs all at the 170k miles. I've never had one use oil, always full. I changed the oil in last one every 5k, this one when it tells me too. Not sure about the miles. But overall, they've been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned, car or truck. Enjoy your videos.

@@charlieb308 I never buy any brand with a Turbo so I wouldn't purchase an EcoBoost. I also never buy any vehicle regardless of bran with a CVT transmission. My son works at a Chevy Dealership, one of the largest in the states but they sell all brands and their other locations. The mechanics there all buy F150's but specific ones. They tell me the Toyota's are actually a little better, but they won't buy them because when they get old, the repairs are outrageous. You can spend $1k replacing a starter on some models of Toyota trucks. They tell me you can put a lot of miles on a Chevy too it just cost more money to get it there. Electrical, check engine lights, etc. I've never had a check engine light come on pre 200k but it does happen. Not everyone has a great F150 experience.
