I sell new Nissans and I'm well aware of the CVT. It's a transmission fluid temperature reader that's not keeping the the fluid cool. Make sure you service it at the dealership so the technicians monitor it. The CVT wears out when the customer isn't aware that the temperature gauge has overheated and the transmission begins to wear out. It's avoided by not reving your engine in gear unnecessarily. Don't push the car to pass people aggressively. Service with the dealership and get a diagnostic every oil change. Diagnosis are free. What Scotty doesn't mention about the CVT are the benefits. CVTs save gas milage is the best yes but they also shift extremely smoothly. The ride in a Nissan is much more comfortable than any other Japanese car because of the CVT and the noise cancellation interior makes for less road and engine noise to. Nissan's push for innovative technology for a superior ride and they release new saftey and convenience technology before the other Japanese manufacturers. Stick with your Nissan, take car of it and service it well. Just like any other car!

@@scottsuem3384 The CVT doesn't just go out at anytime. There has to be wear and tear on it or mechanical failure. You also get warranty on the replacement too. CVT transmissions actually last a long time, but you need to do proper maintenance on it. A lot of people don't bother changing the fluid ever lol. Be happy you still have warranty too, as many people don't. I don't think it is the CVT itself that is the issue, it is the company that supplied it. Which is probably why Nissan still uses CTV. If you are that concerned, sell the vehicle.

The achilles heel for all CVTs is torque. The first CVT used in a passenger vehicle sold in the U.S. was the 1987-1994 Subaru Justy. But the Justy weighed just under 2,000 lbs and had a 1.2L engine cranking out a modest 73hp and 71ft/lbs of torque. As a result, the CVT in the Justy had no significant service issues, as I recall. I think the reason Toyota and Honda CVTs last longer (so far) is because they're offered mostly in Toyota/Honda's smaller FWD vehicles, where the engines don't have much torque, or in their hybrids, wherein electric motors bypass the CVT when moving the vehicle from a dead stop, thus eliminating the vast amount of torque strain that CVTs in larger non-hybrid and/or AWD vehicles experience. This relief greatly extends the life of the CVT. When CVTs are connected to larger vehicles with more powerful engines and/or AWD systems like the Nissan Rogue or almost any Subaru, the CVTs can't handle the constant torque load, so the belt/chains in them strip and can't grab the variable shafts and pulleys anymore, rendering the transmission useless. That is why, for the indefinite future, I can't see myself buying any non-hybrid vehicle with a CVT, especially since I live in a mountainous area, which is hard on any transmission anyway.

@NeedsMoDakka 7 ай бұрын
As someone who had a 2014 Honda Insight [hybrid], i had zero transmission issues up to 154k miles as the second owner. Thanks for your 'insight', pun intended. Reducing the the load on the CVT is logically a good idea

Hey Scotty you prob already know this but found this: For the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Toyota created an all new CVT with a "launch gear" or a physical 1st gear from a conventional automatic transmission alongside the CVT pulley. From 0-25 mph the transmission would stay in this launch gear to aid in acceleration from a stop and improve durability of the CVT. After 25 mph, the transmission would switch over to the CVT pulley.

I think the belt is the "weakest link" for a lot of the CVTs out there. When that belt blows, it's a mess of shrapnel inside the transmission. Toyota doesn't use a belt to achieve CVT in their Prius: it's all done by varying RPMs in MG1, MG2, and the ICE. Cool stuff.

A few years a friend of me rented a Focus from Enterprise. That transmission was awful. It never shifted properly when going into a higher gear. Amazing how these auto engineers go to college and study engineering but cannot develop a transmission that shifts smoothly. This is not rocket science and they are not developing warp drive. Makes me wonder what they are really studying in college because it is not engineering . Nissan could probably care less about the CVT "problem". They will place the fault on the owner. Besides most lease the vehicle & after three years they do not have to bother with the CVT going south because it will end up being someone else's problem.

You got to realize the secret to getting longevity out of a CVT transmission is to change the fluid. Our first CVT we owned was in a 2008 Nissan Rogue. I myself changed the fluid every 40,000 miles .. when we got rid of the car at a hundred and forty thousand the cvt was perfect... a friend of mine bought the vehicle from us and he kept up exactly what I was doing changing the fluid every 40,000 miles. And the last time I talked to him he said that he has almost 200,000 on the CVT with no issues at all. We also have a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 85000 and I have done the same for that vehicle. After over a century of making reduction gearboxes, perhaps the engineer-bean counter war has been won in favor of the engineers. If the gears and bearings outlast the rest of the car, and the gear case doesn't fracture, maybe they are good at last? Bean Counter: "Can't the gear case be made of recycled beer cans? We could save 6¢ per unit." Engineer: "If you want warranty claims on broken gear cases, OK." Bean Counter: "Just so it lasts more than 5 years and 60,000 miles."

The CVT in the Prius is totally different technology from the ones used in Nissan and Hondas. The eCVT in the Prius (and certain Fords) uses a planetary gearset to combine the output of the gas and electric motors. By varying the input from the electric motor on the ring gear, it creates nearly infinite ratios between the gas engine and the wheels. It's reliable tech and doesn't create that rubber-band sensation. It's also patented, so only Ford and Toyota can use it. Regular CVTs use steel belts and cone-shaped pulleys and vary the ratio by moving the belts on the pulleys. It's a friction-based mechanical system and not particularly reliable or fun to drive.

From what I've read, the biggest fault of the JATCO CVTs is that the metal belt shares the same oil with the gears, so when it goes, it takes half the transmission with it. I have to wonder why JATCO didn't aim to make this belt-chain-thing separately replaceable without the removal of the tranny; it could have had a removable link, like a bicycle chain, so it could be replaced from the bottom for $300, instead of necessitating a $6,000 transmission replacement.

That's only true for the E-CVT. Toyota also makes a conventional CVT for use in their Corollas(IMO they should just stick to the E-CVT. I hear only good things about it)

Hi Scotty, I have no comments. I have no questions. I know nothing about the mechanics of an automobile nor do I care to know anything about it. But your channel popped up on my feed a few weeks ago and though the subject matter (auto mechanics) is totally uninteresting to me. I'm addicted to your videos!

My 2017 Altima has 295,000 miles ( I drive Uber) with first transmission and engine. CVT dont goes out. You buy Nissan CVT fluid and go to Valvoline and do a transmission flush every 60-80K or when it starts slipping. After the flush it runs strong and with no slipping. Valvoline put a hose into your dipstick and suck all the dirt out ask them to use your Nissan NS-3 fluid for newer ones. Valvoline runs 3-4 cycles and filter all dirt out. After that it runs very strong!!! If you don't changes it you don't have power from the traffic stop. Flush it and it will run fine. On CVT you could also change the valve body $200 remanufactured, from underneath the oil pan. The steel belt assembly can be taken from the side and be replaced.
