One of the big things they'd do is sell them brakes when honestly they didn't even need em and they had other bigger issues. Y? B/c brakes can get them in and out in a couple hrs AND high profit margin. When ever they'd resurface the rotors, they wouldn't even look if its far enough from min. Spec

I never had a problem with them on an oil change, but they did mess up on a tire change and ended up putting an old worn out tire back on the car. I took it back and made them straighten things out. They actually were tossing one of my brand new tires. My biggest complaint with their Tire and Lube Express, was they should take Express out of the name, and I said that to the customer service lady on the phone. They asked!

I worked at the Walmart quicklube while in college for mechanical engineering. The other 3 guys that worked there evenings and weekends were also college students and we were all car guys. We never had an issue. So you should say SOME of the places are bad, not all. Some have decently smart people that know what they're doing. We did oil changes and tires, repairs, replacements, rotations etc.
@andyt6777

I tell you from personal experience. Not all Walmart have smart guys like yours. My friend went in to get an oil change. They drained the transmission fluid then over filled the engine oil. The engine was smoking. Now Walmart have to pay for damages.

Maybe things have changed. In college I worked for Sears doing minor things on cars. Oil and battery changes, points and plugs, shocks, tires. Never had any problems doing that. Now most cars do not need much and it is hard to find the engine under all the the shrouds. Did lots of work on my own car. They did have some mechanics that did some of the more demanding work and we could always ask them if we were not sure of what we were doing. Really how much education does it take to change the oil and filter on most cars.

That sounds good and props to you. But if you had a 50% of getting shot going outside of your door at home - would many of us take that chance? What about 40%? What about 30%. So the fact that some of the places arent bad doesn't matter. The risk of a damaged engine and the hassle of the place trying to get out of responsibility is not worth it. Again much respect to you and ALL of them should be like you but the fact that this can happen...many of us would be like "why even risk my car for an oil change". We'll just pass and keep it moving.

@derekgardin1512 You are 100% correct. Not everyone at Wal-Mart is incompetent. The posts here, critical of Walmart, neglect to mention the oil changes you get anyplace else are not immune to hiring morons, or to ripping you off. Find a place that's good for you and stick with it. Half of American marriages end in divorce, that's a lot worse odds than an oil change at Wal-Mart.

I really enjoy Scotty's videos, but he constantly advises you to change your own oil. I used to do that, but now, for me it's unrealistic. I had to sell my home as a consequence of my divorce, and now live in a rental apartment. So I have no place to either change oil myself, or store the oil change equipment. And, there is no place to recycle the used oil. K-mart used to allow you to do that, but the local store (as mostly all others) closed. Garages at one time were required to take used oil, but I don't know if that's true now.

I used to use a popular rapid lube place for my Camry. After using them for years, I took it to a mechanic for another issue and asked him to do the oil change as well. I was just watching him and he took out the filter cartridge. It was solid. It had not been changed for years. Fortunately, we caught it before major damage and I drove that Camry another 150,000 miles, 250,000 miles plus and it was still tight. Now I always use a mechanic I trust.

My niece had exactly the same experience at Walmart. They failed to actually put heavy oil in the engine and it seized just as she left the parking lot. They did pay to put a new crate engine in. One of the biggest problems is the fact that most high schools no longer have any VOTEC training... No auto shop, No wood shop, No electric shop, etc. Our school systems are failing us in so many ways... Sadly no competent mechanic wants to do the oil changes because most are paid on commission, and there's just no money in it. Of course some places use it as a basis to charge you even more money doing additional work that's not needed. The entire system is just so broken.

My dealership used to try to sell me the air filter change special. For only $100 bucks they would charge your engine and cabin air filters. I can buy both filters for around $30.00 and put both of them in just a few minutes. The longest part is getting stuff out of the glove box and putting it back. The $100 at the shop only covered parts and labor. They would tack on a fee for shop supplies, hey! I used a paper towel to wipe my hands on after doing the engine air filter, Then there is the environmental fee. I can throw the old filters in the trash can with the best of them. Dealership has kind of backed off that one

Have a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe we took in to the dealer for state inspection. For around 3 weeks after that it would backfire off and on and you would see black smoke out of the exhaust. I couldn’t understand it because it was always a good running car. My daughter was taking it on a long trip to Louisiana so I wanted to change the oil. I do all my own oil changes so I have a 6 qt drain pan ( my car takes 5 qt)and I’m under the car and open the drain plug.Right away I knew something wasn’t right. The oil just shot out of the drain hole and filled up the drip pan and I had at least a quart all over the driveway before I got the plug back in. When I emptied that, I opened the drain again and got another 2 qt before it stopped. I went back to the dealer and told the service manager. He pulled the paperwork and evidently they do the courtesy check of the fluids and top them off. He said his best guy did the service! I said well there’s a problem somewhere because I had 4 extra qts of oil in my engine. He looked at me like okay, so what do you want me to say. I said I’m just letting you know and left. I was just very lucky I changed the oil because it could have blown the engine on my daughters trip which was around 4000 highway miles. I would be out big money for a new engine.

If the lawnmower wasn't maintained, we couldn't cut grass and the weekly "allowance" would have been nil. No ticket ...no wash. When we got older, we knew the base info (oil level/fluids etc.) for the vehicle was in the car manual that was always found the glove compartment. However, the general age of the people that work at car repair/maintenance places can sure play hell out of those video games.

@peagee4518, entry-level still shouldn't mean you show up to work "like a vegetable." As the "non-mechanic", I do change oil/filter in my vehicles and have had to do much more than routine maintenance like when I inherited a "Dodge"

I do oil changes and everyone who has ever worked on cars will tel you that f ups happen and it sucks. That being said, I have not forgot to put oil in a car that has been drained..... all It can take is someone who is frustrated, emotionally upset and a bunch of other reasons that could cause them to forget to do this.

Another stupid design is the water pump that is driven by a cam pully on the opposite side of the engine 🙄 😳

It’s not just walmart. I took my 2018 crv to the Honda dealer for an oil change, they advertised synthetic oil changes for x amount of money. Up to 5 quarts. Three times they put 5 quarts in but, it only takes 3.7 quarts. I had to drain 1.3 quarts out to get the dipstick between the lines. I complained the first and second times the third time I checked it there and made them drain it out. Never again.

My local Honda dealership overfilled my Accord by about a quart. Too many young technicians working there. I have deemed them incompetent

I have never allowed anyone to change my engine oil on any of my vehicles in the 53 years of driving!!! But I had to buy a handicapped van for my wife and it sits so low that even on ramps I can’t get under it so off to Valvoline oil change all went well 2nd time the new crew looked like they were a head banger band tried to sell me everything but oil pulled my air filter showed it to me ( it was as clean as the day it was made) and said I needed a new one it crammed it back in couldn’t get the cover to go back on , never again I guess I’m going to have to buy a lift to keep idiots away from my vehicles.

One of my employees had Walmart change his oil. Pulls into my parking lot and his three year old car is leaking oil profusely. Come to find out they never tightened the oil filter.
