I owned one BMW, and never again. It was fun to drive, but way to many small annoying things went wrong with it from the fan clutch, oil leaks, power stearing fluid leak, radiator leak, electric window control arm x2, and fuel pump out. I only had it for two years and it was a nightmare. Traded it in for a prius, wanted something dependable while I was finishing school. Here, I am still driving the Prius 180,000 miles later.

I was looking for an old mid 2000s Jaguar to have as a daily driver. I never knew how nightmarish it is to maintain the electronics, I do know that the 4.2 v8, the 4.0 inline 6 engines are great. The 3.0 v6 engines are from ford but still reliable. But I failed looking for one, due to almost everyone having an issue, except for one, but it was in a really shady dealer which I avoided after one visit. I wouldn't buy anything else apart from BMW in the price range of a used one, but it has to be a straight 6 port injected. I will have to admit though you have to be able to fix it yourself as gaskets and water pump can fail as early as 60k miles , if you can't fix it yourself, you could spend an astronomical amount fixing it. BMW has got many of their issues fixed and have very high reliability ratings. No, I don't want one. The truth is if you want a performance vehicle you gotta pay to play. If you want reliability over performance buy a Toyota. They make great vehicles, boring to drive but very good. I did the boring car thing all of my life. As Mark says, "Life's to short to drive boring cars!" I got to that old age where I want to live a little. What ever you do Do Not Buy A Ford!! Lololol

Although BMW and many German brands are expensive and can be expensive to maintain, I feel that generally people don't buy them for reliability reasons but instead for fun/performance reasons. Of course a prius is going to be more reliable but I would not buy a prius if I was trying to have fun going on drives and canyon runs. I wouldn't call them bad cars at all you just have to know what you are getting into before buying one.

As a European, I can never understand the fascination and obsession with BMW, what is the big deal please? They are terrible in the snow and ice, oil leaks aplenty, plastic engine parts, constant issues with engine mgmt lights, overrpriced parts and service, and so on and on and on? Someone please explain? To me BMW's have always been just a slightly better than average car, not quite at Mercs level, but above most other European brands.

Scotty, there is a guy in Europe with a Giulia with the same engine as this that has done 300,000 miles with not a single problem. And they are usually more straight forward to work on than German cars. I dont know why people are scared to work on these. Just because it looks exotic doesn't mean it's difficult.
