@scottykilmer One factor you didn't calculate in...the ridiculous sticker price on Toyotas deflates the maintenance cost as a percentage of the sticker price. As an example, I compared the the Corolla and Civic, and their maintenance costs were actually similar. The sticker price on Toyotas sort of makes this a bogus comparison. It should just be maintenance costs...dollar for dollar.

My 15 y/o Honda Accord only needed a tension pulley in all that time. Beyond that, the only cost was maintenance. I respect your opinion Scotty, but the way you care for the car has a lot to do with how long a car will last. I know you love Toyota products, but they aren't made in heaven!

I bought my Honda Civic Sport brand new in 2019. Basically it was the last full size 2.0L V-tech (no turbo) , 6-speed before Honda put golf-cart motors with turbos in every car and eliminated the manuals (except for the SI). Glad I bought my car when I did. I've had zero issues with it.

Other than that, the only money I've spent is on the front struts. $350 total to do both. I've kept it clean every two weeks with a car wash also. Oh, two sets of tires. One came with the car, the other I'm getting ready to replace now.

You should use total dollar cost(absolute values) instead of % cost(relative values) in comparing real maintenance costs. At 10 % maintenance for a $35000 car that is $3500 for total maintenance. If you pay $ 70000 for a car with 7% maintenance, you are paying $ 4900. The difference is $1400 So the real maintenance cost is in favor of the cheaper car with it higher %. That means a total cost of $38500 vs $ 74900. But if you can afford a $70000 car, then maintenance cost is of no concern compared to someone who can't....PS. Scotty's advice saved me a few thousand dollars in repairing(maintaining) my car.....SO a BIG Thanks to you Scotty.

Scotty I did my research before buying a 2015 LX 570 with a 156K miles on it. I paid $29K for it. One of the factors in my wanting this particular SUV was the cost to maintain and the residual value. I had a 2006 Mazda 3 that went 470,000 KM over 10 years. Somehow other then regular maintenance it only needed an engine mount replacement (prob from rust which was that generations issue). I now have a 2016 at 250,000 KM. The 2016 needed a master cylinder around the 200,000 KM mark (approx $1100) and some front end work (approx $1100). I really like the current generation, the 2.5L NA would probably be super reliable. I wouldn't bother with turbo and just get snow tires instead of AWD.

My company uses ram promaster vans and the only consistent issue we see is the backup camera having issues. Otherwise we take them up to 150k before swapping them out and dont have major issues. But we drive them a lot and keep up with maintenance

Hello sir / Scott This is John Chan the fisherman. I'm retiring from my law enforcement career at 55 yr old. At this time, my wife and I own 6 Toyota...2007 tundra 5.7 liter has 197K miles on it. She pulls my 22 ft Boston whaler with 175HP Suzuki every summer with ease, 2007 RX350 with 62K miles, 2009 Toyota yaris with 168K miles, 2013 RX350 with 121K miles, 2018 NX300 with 72K miles, and a 2022 GR86 with 6K miles on it. I convinced my wife to stick to Toyota because of the cheap to maintain and long lasting vehicles. Although I had owned many different brands of cars in the past. Just to name a few used to own evoX, C-7, WRX, mustang RTR and California special...ect. So far very happy with our Toyota. I changed my engine oil every 5000 miles. Enjoyed your video, thanks.

Tesla actual maintenance costs are the same across all models, but when you divide the high prices of the X and S, maintenance costs just appear cheaper due to the cost of these models.

We bought a new 1996 Grand Caravan and had it for 15 years. One transmission replacement at 95k miles, got rid of it when the 2nd transmission started to act up at 240k miles in 2011. I loved its 4 x 8 bed with both bench seat removed - excellent for runs to Home Depot. Our replacement was a Toyota Sienna (with a roof rack).

I own and drive a 1974 Pontiac TransAm SD455 Ordered With All Options Available. Best Car I’ve Got Never Left Me on the side of the road. I change all fluids from Power Steering to Brake Every 30,000 oil & Filter every 2500 as well as a quick Lube rotate tires Every 3rd oil change silicone spray all hinges as well as all rubber around glass and doors & locks. Car is out of date on the road but it’s a choice the expense is High Octane fuel Big Deal car is fun to drive and I GET RESPECT automatically in it which is funny Cuz during the 80’S & 90’S it was just another Old Car LoL.

First 10secs are the most wise words ever. Bought a Suzuki Jimny brand new and did some traveling and some offroading... Mostly level 2 or 3 stuff... 48.000km... whole bottom and suspension rusted, gearbox COMPLETELY destroyed, clutch gone... and 7 other minor things... 6500€ of repairs after 5 years and barely 50.000km. THAT'S A 30% RELATIVE MAINTENANCE COST! Suzuki said: Over 5 years, zero guarantee, byeeeee Will buy a V6 Ranger Wildtrak 2025... Will never buy one of those weak engines/gearboxes etc anymore Amazing vehicle... Nothing comparable for this price tag and would get a 8000€ discount if my farmer license gets approved. Can't wait! And first thing, I will do a PU undercoating and hope to keep it forever (I am half a century myself 😢😅) Any high mileage Wildtrak owners have any suggestions to look at/easy fixes/problems?

I’ve got a 2016 Mazda CX9 with 290k miles and it still runs perfectly. Total maintenance (including tires) is 4.4¢/mile. I don’t think percentage of purchase price over a decade is a fair way to judge reliability. While overall spent 25% of the purchase price over & years, I have an insane number of miles on the car.

When car shopping, consider the cost of maintenance in addition to the purchase price. Infrequent repairs save you time, money, and frustration! Also note that some brands are achieving improved performance in recent years, but their score/reputation are dragged downward due to past poor performance IE Hyundai & Ram. Maintenance Costs relative to the Initial Purchase Price over the first 10 years of the vehicle: Non-Luxury Toyota 13% (Toyota = 8/10 of the top-10 minimal maintenance non-luxury models) Land Cruiser 7.3% Sequoia 8.5% Supra 8.6% 4-Runner 10.5% Tundra 11.8% Camry 12% Prius 12.1% GMC 14.3% Ford 18.2% Chevy 19.8% Honda 21.2% Mazda 25-26% (More CX5s sell in the US than all other Mazda models combined!) Kia 25-26% Dodge 26.3% Chrysler 26.6% Ram 27.8% Hyundai 28% Luxury Tesla 7% (exception is an out-of-warranty catastrophic battery failure) Lexus 12.3% ( LX 570 7.6%) Land Rover 22.5% Volvo/Jaguar 22.5-24% BMW 25.3%

I have purchased a Kia Soul LX. I have owned one previously and am very happy. Also I sold my Kia Rio 2020 to Car Max for 10000.00 and I purchased it for 15,880.00. I had received a net equity check and paid off my old auto loan. Kia has a good limited warranty and drivetrain engine warranty for 100.000. And I perform maintenance every 5000 miles.

The problem with this approach is you also need to consider the price. A car company could simply charge more and by this metric it would become “better” in terms of maintenance.
