@scottykilmer One factor you didn't calculate in...the ridiculous sticker price on Toyotas deflates the maintenance cost as a percentage of the sticker price. As an example, I compared the the Corolla and Civic, and their maintenance costs were actually similar. The sticker price on Toyotas sort of makes this a bogus comparison. It should just be maintenance costs...dollar for dollar.

My 15 y/o Honda Accord only needed a tension pulley in all that time. Beyond that, the only cost was maintenance. I respect your opinion Scotty, but the way you care for the car has a lot to do with how long a car will last. I know you love Toyota products, but they aren't made in heaven!

I bought my Honda Civic Sport brand new in 2019. Basically it was the last full size 2.0L V-tech (no turbo) , 6-speed before Honda put golf-cart motors with turbos in every car and eliminated the manuals (except for the SI). Glad I bought my car when I did. I've had zero issues with it.

I owned 5 Toyota including 1980 Celica GT, Trecel, Corolla, Prizm, all were brought in used with low mileage except Trecel that I trade with Isuzu Trooper-II. I never had any issue maintain and repair cost compared to Volvo GL, GLEm (made in Sweden) Oldsmobile Delta 88 that brought new but drained me with insurance and repair and maintenance. My sister brought and leased Lexas ES 350, SUV and she had no problem finding buyer after the lease expired.

Ah, the poor RX-8's misunderstood Dorito engine. Most of the problems with the RX-8 are really owner-induced, simply because people don't know two things about them: 1. They don't behave and wear quite like piston engines. 2. More so than most cars - they have to be driven to keep working. Wankel engines are 100% use it or lose it, and have the best longevity with blasting cobwebs (or really, carbon) out of them by wringing them out regularly. They're not really high-maintenance so much as they have different needs from more conventional engines. Understand them, and they'll last about as long as any other engine. But if you don't - well, you're one of the people who've had to have a new Dorito put in every 60,000 miles, because it's jammed full of carbon buildup. For my money, it's one of Mazda's finest cars, right up there with the Miata. It just got an unfairly bad rap for leaking oil and burning through engines - which wasn't really the fault of the design. Just poor education on how to maintain them, even to Mazda dealers.

Scotty I did my research before buying a 2015 LX 570 with a 156K miles on it. I paid $29K for it. One of the factors in my wanting this particular SUV was the cost to maintain and the residual value. The frame had a little rust on it but after a power wash I could see it was superficial rust. The paint is immaculate, the interior was well cared for.

I convinced my wife to stick to Toyota because of the cheap to maintain and long lasting vehicles. Although I had owned many different brands of cars in the past. Just to name a few used to own evoX, C-7, WRX, mustang RTR and California special...ect. So far very happy with our Toyota. I changed my engine oil every 5000 miles. Enjoyed your video, thanks.

You should use total dollar cost(absolute values) instead of % cost(relative values) in comparing real maintenance costs. At 10 % maintenance for a $35000 car that is $3500 for total maintenance. If you pay $ 70000 for a car with 7% maintenance, you are paying $ 4900. The difference is $1400 So the real maintenance cost is in favor of the cheaper car with it higher %. That means a total cost of $38500 vs $ 74900. But if you can afford a $70000 car, then maintenance cost is of no concern compared to someone who can't....PS. Scotty's advice saved me a few thousand dollars in repairing(maintaining) my car.....SO a BIG Thanks to you Scotty.

My sister bought a BMW X SUV and I have to agree it's an amazing looking/driving vehicle. The quietest and smoothest vehicle I've ever driven on the highway. But personally I still don't think it's worth the $70k she is shelling out... but at least it has a warranty

My 15 y/o Honda Accord only needed a tension pulley in all that time. Beyond that, the only cost was maintenance. I respect your opinion Scotty, but the way you care for the car has a lot to do with how long a car will last. I know you love Toyota products, but they aren't made in heaven!

Remember, these are costs before the warranty ends and only include oil, transmission fluid, battery, and brakes. Once the warranty ends and the mechanical and electrical parts start failing, that's a different animal.

Toyota costs more than Audi in Ukraine) That's why I bought A4 over Camry. Also a lot of people buy car for a couple of years, not a half of the life. That's why you can buy what you want and then sell if it's too expensive to maintain.

No, I would not buy a vehicle with high maintenance costs. That is why I own a 2010 Toy Taco TRD with tow pkg, rear locker, 6SPD, DBL cab 4X4 and JBL sound system w/6cdchanger. My wife owns a 2014 Subaru Forester XT. I baby that CVT as much as I can. 😆

So for Toyotas, it's almost like for the more expensive models, the higher % price for maintenance, but when when you get to the lower price models, it's easier to reach a higher % of the low initial cost with the usual parts, so that trend is reversed

The point about the Toyota Supra having the best maintenance costs but BMW having the worst makes no sense since the Supra is a BMW. I am surprised Porsche isn't on there for high costs. I have a Macan as my daily driver and love it but regular maintenance, fluid changes etc aren't cheap and they are essential

Any suggestions would be helpful same with Highlander?

I bought a used 2004 Taurus in really nice condition but 176k miles. Transmission does a hard shift in first gear only if you go fast, slow driving off the bat it shifts smooth. Should I do a fluid chang or ride it smooth and easy in first gear to hopefully get a few years out of it. The fluid doesn't look terrible but also not great. Not black or anything but light pink mixed with dark mixed in.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the conclusions drawn here, you also have to compare percentage of cost AND actual dollars to really get this. 7.5% on a Land Cruiser is going to be around $10950 over 10 years, while 12% for Camry is going to be $4500. The BMWs look even worse when you look at say a 2024 M3 you’re talking $19750! A $174k Land Cruiser is the same maintenance cost as TWO M3’s. Or put another way, the maintenance costs of an M3 could cover FOUR Camrys.
