You reminded me of a story I heard. A guy got a flat tire outside the yard of a mental institute. As he was putting on his spare tire he dropped all the lug nuts down the storm drain. He let out a loud exclamation, with curses, as he watched the lug nuts disappear. An inmate who was inside the fence and happened to be watching the mishap, yelled at the driver; "take one of the lug nuts off each of the other three wheels of your car and you'll be able to get to a parts store on three lug nuts." The driver was perplexed at such good advice coming from the insane asylum inmate and said; "that's a great idea, I thought you people were supposed to be crazy", to which the inmate responded; "well we might be crazy but we're not stupid."

One of the young guys in the shop I used to work at was undoing the positive lead from a battery and his wrench touched the negative pole - the battery went bang and he got covered in battery acid. 15 mins in the shower and a trip to the emergency room to get checked out, but luckily no lasting damage to him or the car. Ever since then, I've always thrown a rag over any uncovered battery poles.

That is why the negative terminal is always the last one to connect. If you touch a wrench to a positive terminal with a negative connected, the wrench can touch any ground and have the same bad result. I had a battery explode in a 70 Corvette while starting the car. The battery is in a compartment right behind the driver seat. It blew the compartment wide open and dumped battery acid all over. That is why with the older batteries, you always wanted to make sure the electrolyte level was topped up. If it drops below the plates, and you try to start the car, you can get a spark that ignites the battery. While in high school, I was working in a Ford dealership, and one of the mechanics disconnected a battery charger before turning off the battery charger. The battery blew up in his face. I grabbed him and took him into the car wash and sprayed him down real good. He had no lasting effects from the Acid Bath but certainly learned his lesson.

My 12yo Sonic LS sans turbo and automatic has relatively simple electronics, even a proper top post battery. Incredible lighting system never allows a dead battery. I've only changed rubber parts like wipers, tires and coolant hoses. For a noise I replaced the serpentine, but the tensioner was the cause. Saved the original belt, it's still serviceable. Original timing belt is like new, no cracks or crumbling of the teeth. Tensioner or idler will fail first, so will change it all soon. Original Freon, brakes, clutch, and the only engine bolt turned is the oil pan plug. No seeping or burning, oil stays full between changes. Simple is the best of every brand.

Hey, Loved the video. I work on batteries for an Insurance company and enjoy that youre educating people on the do and donts. One thing to mention on the KAM unit that goes in to the OBD II to save memory when youre changing a battery, is that most German cars, 2000 and newer, should not be KAMed as providing 12v through the OBD II port can seriously damage the computer. A work around is to connect your jump box to the cigarette outlet to provide power so a minimum amount of memory is lost. (but never Jump Start the car this way) On most cars if your windows stop rolling up and down all the way, you can try and rolling them up as far as they will go and down all the way then up again and it usually fixes the problem, repeat for each individual window.

Honestly Scotty, love your work. Worked for BMW, not anymore though, now gone indie. I learned to simple charge all batteries on AGM setting. AGM setting is lower amps than "regular" setting. Won't wear out lithium batteries either. Save myself a lot of time at work, forget trying to decipher what kind of battery I'm charging. Won't blow up a lead acid, perfect for AGM, and if it has a secondary lithium battery for starting, won't kill that either

That's weird. Placing the pos and neg from jumper battery on corresponding terminals on weak battery should not damage anything. Unless connecting the 2 batteries together in parallel results in a larger current draw because of the larger capacity to supply current. By putting the ground from jumper battery on the engine the sensor is effectively bypassed and not exposed to potentially excessive current that could occur if the negative from jumper is placed directly on negative of weal battery.

I have to say you are a wealth of knowledge and I started watching your videos yesterday to learn how to change the battery terminals. it was very simple to do and your video was very informative and easy to follow. So I kind of went down the rabbit hole of your videos LOL and I’ve been watching through quite a few of them. I love that you take the time to educate your viewers on how and why things work the way they do. My grandpa was a well-known mechanic in Santa Clara California. I can’t even tell you how many times I asked him to teach me even just the basics and his response was always the same, no. Car mechanics is not a girls job. Great info on the battery jumping. It's worth mentioning that ALWAYS connect the red/positive to the terminal FIRST then the black/neg to a part of the car. This minimizes sparking to virtually nothing. Also, while you mentioned that battery explosions/fires are rare, they can and DO happen even with today's batteries. Always clear the air around the battery, (just fan it), before connecting to a terminal. If you've ever seen a battery explode, it will ruin your day and possibly your car, eyes, face, skin, and so on... I've watch average people try to jump their cars in parking lots, (it's like a hobby), and frankly, it's 50/50 as to whether I see them light it up or get it right.😑

I’m 55 years old now, but I remember a traumatic experience from when I was about 5. My dad took my family on vacation and we stopped to get gas. A motorists’ battery died so my dad offered him a jump. My dad connected the cables to our car and the stranger hooked his ends. The moment the poor fella touched the negative terminal, the battery violently exploded in his face. He had no goggles or any protective gear. I don’t know what became of him but I’ve never forgotten that experience.

Scotty, you can help a lot of people with older or high mileage front wheel drive cars if you do a video warning them to be sure to also >change the small heater hoses that are not visible behind the engine! My 2015 Sedona lost all of the coolant in the radiator on a long trip and overheated damaging the head. Even I was making regular under the hood checks, I didn't know that the coolant was low because the system didn't pull a vacuum. Resivior was still full even when this happened! $7,000 repair!

You don't really have to tell it but there are glass batteries and acid batteries. By telling it what kind it is the computer can extend the life of it by charging it at different rates.

My 2011 Camaro Convertible had the AGM battery and there was a reason it was ordered like a race car with only the suspension and drivetrain upgrades! Even stripped down there are tons of electronics, but GM doesn't make life harder. My '08 Caddy came with a lead acid but I went back with the glass mat, and I did that battery swap myself, but quickly, and my battery wasn't dead dead. Thanks for the Video Scotty! Now I have another reason to never purchase a BMW.

When I changed the battery in my Acura I simply hooked a trickle charger to the battery cables while I disconnected the battery to change it out. This kept all my car memories. Saw this trick on someone’s KZbin channel and it worked.

Scotty, one of the things that I do when replacing my battery is replace the positive battery terminal with a OEM new one. This way, I know that there is no corrosion to deal with. My car (a 2009 Scion xB) has the battery attached to the positive cable with a bolt so I can just unbolt the old one and install the new one. BTW, one of the reasons that I save the computer memory is the radio presets. I'v only had to reset all of the radio stations once. I now hook up a 9 volt batt. to the 12 volt DC connection under the dash.

Yeah, knowing the side glass is laminated before you roll over in a ditch is definitely helpful! I'm going to rush out and replace the glass with tempered glass because there's a big market for tempered glass for cars that have laminated glass who want tempered glass!

I had a lawnmower battery blow on me. Instead of buying a new on at start of the season, I, like the tightwad I am, charged it. It was dead dead, so had my trusty HD charger/jump box. Mower started, didn't turn off charger before removing cable, and wha laa. Battery gases, spark, and brain fart. Not good combo. Headed into house for some baking soda, water, and soap and water. Hello Mr. SCOTT! I was a Class 8 Truck Mechanic (Disabled Now) can't walk. My wife's Infiniti, Sunday driver, got to where it wouldn't crank after sitting for a few day's. I went to Autozone, my Friend is the Manager, to get a new Battery to replace the original Japanese made one. He checked it and,it was going bad. I bought a new one and we got two of the same Batteries, put them on a cart, and outside we went. The battery is on the right side in a box against the firewall. You have to take all the cowl plastic and, trim off to change these things. FUN! The Sterios anti theft will lock up and, won't work if no power is on and, other systems also, which means a trip to the dealership. We got everything off, and loosened the Terminals, used a set of jumper cables hooked to the other new Battery, so the car wouldn't lose power, I held the cables on, so they didn't pop of while he pulled the old Battery. Dropped the new one in and put the Terminals on the new battery, unhooked the jumpers. Tightened every thing up and put all the cowl pieces back on and everything worked perfect! It was a P.I.T.A. having to remove so much stuff. They are not supposed to do cars like this, just the quick, simple drop ins. He did me a BIG favor. You are right about the negative terminal end having a piece inline, that's sealed with all kinds of things and, fuses you can see through the clear plastic. Keep power on these new vehicles if at all possible, or you WILL be taking a trip to the dealership for some resets that only they can unlock!

@@onlythewise1 About 25 years ago, they were talking about engineering the vehicles so that they would require special tools that only the stealerships would have. The manufacturers are also engineering certain components so that they can't be serviced, only replaced. My 2013 F-150 has a transmission that doesn't have a dipstick. You can't check the fluid level. It looks like changing the fluid would be complicated. It probably can be done, but it requires special equipment that only certain "authorized" service centers have.

I’ve been doing that exact same thing forever instead of jumping both sides of the battery I’ve always went and put the ground on a good piece of steel on the blockers where I can get my other clamp grounded good

Ever since my first car (1967) and having to buy a replacement battery every 45 months for a 48-month-warranty battery, jumping instructions ALWAYS said connect the negative cable to a grounded part of the engine away from the battery.

One thing I have learned that most mechanics don't know: 1) always check the voltage/amperage coming out your battery, you may have enough to run the car but if it is failing it will fire off so many error codes you would think your engine is terminally cancerous. Mechanics will happily read those codes and say you need $4000k worth of repairs when all you needed was a new battery!!!

God i literally just dealt with this i literally went through my whole savings replacing this and that taking so many hours of my time during the work week to install the parts that i did. After doing so and nothing working i went against what all the scanners and voltage readers were telling me and got a new battery and low and behold my cars brand new again. Im pissed but on the bright side atleast everything else under my hood is brand new as well and i learned alot so cant be to mad. shouldnt have to worry about much for another 60-80000 miles either im guessing so thats another plus but now im broke as hell, feel a little dumb, but hey atleast my car loves me again haha

Not only codes, but other weird things can happen. My car would start right up in any weather conditions, even if it was -15 Fahrenheit, but the RPM gauge would fail intermittently, which can be a sign of major issues. Even worse, the speedometer would go wonky at freeway speeds. No check engine light came on. The battery tested "bad," so I replaced the battery, and now the RPM gauge works fine. I haven't done much freeway driving, but I've taken many short highway trips, and the speedometer has not malfunctioned at all. The crazy thing is that the previous owner kept a written maintenance log, and she also had issues with the speedometer, as well as with the car downshifting randomly when the speedometer went wonky - her mechanic had no idea what the issue was. I suspect the battery was bad for years, and no one figured it out, because the car reliably started up without a struggle.

These directions for jump starting have been around for many years I want to say these directions were in the owners guide in my 80 Buick that had a carb. If you got have a good scan tool with data stream don't even bother working on a car.

At the bottom of each glass panel on your vehicle, it will say “Laminated” if it is laminated. On newer Honda’s both front doors have laminated glass and the back two doors have standard glass.

Yea I accidentally broke the upper radiator hose on the BMW because it's all plastic. Never buy a BMW unless you like spending money on unnecessary repairs.

@@ruben2365 I think that the old ones were quite a driver's car but now they have half the world's known supply of petroleum in them in the form of plastic. A friend of mine and I used to race an old one in gykahynas back in the day and it was as dependable as a claw hammer. How could they go from that to this? Agreed on the plastic radiator tanks....the guy that came up with that ought to be either tortured to death or made to fix BMWs in a dark, cold garage for eternity.

I had a 2005 passat a few years ago. It needed 3 cables to jump start. Said so in the car manual. Plus to plus on battery Minus to battery Minus to ground on the engine

In my 2021 Ford Edge you just press the start button (key fob in the car, don't start the car), flash the high beam 5 times, press the brake pedal 3 times, wait a few seconds. The battery icon on the dash will flash a few times - done! Battery monitor system is reset.

Scott in case you didn't know manufactures always put underrated batteries in new cars! Always check the car specifications for your car or truck and in most cases you'll need to put an upgraded battery in. My past experiences on my truck came with a 650cca when specifications called for 750cca!

Yes, but if it is only a bad sensor, rather than an alternator, etc, shouldn't be too expensive to replace....Oxygen sensor ( or whatever ) on my Mini exhaust looks easily replaced. Now, if the darn exhaust pipe @ 20" down from the exhaust manifold would just stop breaking.....

The OBD2 Battery memory saver cannot be used in most new BMW's. It will blow the OBD2 fuse and the car will go into limp mode. Guess you haven't ran into this. Might want to warn ppl of that before they do as you say and pay the price.

@@PoodleMaster69 I'll be 73 in September. I took a '72 Challenger to a dealer for warranty work and had just bought some spark plugs and points, to install myself, and asked them to do so. When I picked it up, it stalled at the first stoplight. And, one or two after that. When I got home I discovered the plugs had varying gaps. I fixed that, set the points correctly and, since I didn't own a timing light at that time, set the timing by ear. Ran Great! When I finally used a timing light, no matter which plug used; the mark was 180° off. Very confusing. After that I did my own work.

@@garymckinley6974 i had similar experience with these thefts but it was a garage ironically it's very well know here. it was 2012 at the time I knew nothing about cars, I toke my mother's 09 Infiniti qx for worn struts, the mechanics said all of the arms are worn down and the AC compressor need replacement even though it was ice cold. he said that it got only few months to die but its still running like new!, I refused to replace it since he'll charge me only for ac replacement 2,722$! after finishing the job I took her car and it didn't want to shift! long story short they literally drained all transmission fluid! :) since then as much as I can I work on our cars

I don't have a "keep memory alive device", I just connect a spare 12v battery to the car battery cable terminals in parallel ( + to +, - to -) while I am replacing the old battery with the new one. Then just disconnect the spare 12 volt battery and your done. The car never knows the battery was removed and replaced..............unless as you say it is a BMW.

In relation to side laminated glass, you can use one of those devices to brake the glass, or if the glass breaks in a roll over event just push against it from the inside. The glass will fall away in one piece and flop against the door. They use that type of glass for security/antitheft and also in a roll over even stops limbs like an arm flying out of the window and being crushed. Also BOSCH make the majority of Oem sensors like your O2 sensor and is the standard in the industry for quality.

This happened to my mazda 3. But all I had to do to reset computer is run it for like 20 minutes. My car was stalli g at stop signs and around corners. After running car for 20 min in driveway. It's worked ever since with no stalling.

I’ve been wanting to get a slightly newer secondhand car but there’s so much to learn from under the hood with all these computerized vehicles it’s really ever so overwhelming. Just wish cars hadn’t evolved to such a degree. I much prefer the older classic styles from the 50’s upwards prior to all this dang blasted technology. Just sharing my thoughts from a 68 yr old female’s perspective. 🚙

Yes, the classic 50-60’s cars were great, but remember: No seat belts/no anti-lock brakes/no anti skid system/ no front and rear crumple zones to keep the cabin intact/no roll over protection to keep the roof from getting crushed/no airbags/ and very few had A/C even as an option. If you were in even a slow speed collision, you were “toast”. The newer cars need a computer degree to work on them, but it’s all a trade off 😀. I know, because my dad drove his 1950 ($5000 loaded) Dodge Coronet until 1965, when he got his 1965 Coronet, he had to pay $50 extra (car was $5000 stripped down model) for “optional” seatbelts.

Thanks Scotty That Battery Management System reset - If I had known this last year my daughter could have got her 2019 BMW battery replaced for free. The car suddenly would not start. Checked the battery. It was at 10.8 volt but it looked fairly new. Got a qoute from the dealership and and was not willing to part with an arm and a leg. Trusted garage qouted a lot less and he had the computer like yours. He mentioned he rest "every thing". Penny dropped when i saw your video. Will tell my daughter all about this "told her she was mental for buying a Beemer".

Take it to a self-car wash and use the high pressure setting with soap and clean all around where the oil is and then drive it until it reaches correct temp and then get a really bright flashlight and go to looking and trace the leak back to the culprit. I did this on my car and it was the oil pressure sending unit on the top back of the engine. Good Luck~!

We also connect the jumper to earth to bypass a dead battery pulling down the jump volts and amps. Modern cars have separate jump studs or terminals away from the battery to ensure safe jump and in addition due to battery location. Always surprised how many vehicles come in because a workshop hasn't recoded the new battery in, or sold a battery not suited to autostart technology. Did I notice the top beam of your garage drop down toward the video end? Time to stick it back up with some fresh paint!
