It cracks me up that people tell you to get an EV to save money when they cost twice as much as similar gas cars, cost almost as much to charge as filling a tank with gas, the battery might last a decade before you have to spend at least $10k to replace it or buy another EV, and the real kicker is they are just as bad for the environment if you factor in the mining of the materials, the power grid still running on fossil fuels to charge them. It's all a scam.
@BuilderofRat
@BuilderofRat 2 ай бұрын
Not to mention, lower used vehicle value, and what happens to unwanted used EVs? They go to a wrecking yard sit there just decaying and releasing very toxic stuff into the soil. These batteries CAN be recycled, but it takes a very sophisticated recovery process with very expensive equipment run by well educated personnel. PLUS, there are not very many of these types of places in the USA!!!! Would you, as an owner/operator volunteer to use your $140,000 livelihood to haul a damaged EV to said recycling facility? They could, and do have thermal runaways which would burn up your livelihood. You are right, it is a scam!!!!!! And now that those that wanted an EV have one, the rest of us want nothing to do with them. This is causing the major auto manufactures to go bankrupt. Could that be the main reason for these EVs? I do not know, but what I do know is that I DO NOT TRUST OUR GOVERNMENT!!!!!!!! They lie to us all of the time. They turn themselves into multi millionaires while in office. Just think about that!!!!!

I remember in the 70s, people were buying Japanese compact cars to save money on gas. They did use less gas so they would be saving money on gas, but the car they already own is paid for so buying a new car means shelling out more money. How many years will it take before they start to save money to reap the benefits of saving money on gas? It's like spending a thousand dollars to save one dollar.

@@robertschmidt9296 My friend has a Tesla and he was like it only costs a few bucks to charge it, but it costs $4k to install a charger in your house and the car itself was $130k, and they're insanely expensive to repair even for minor damage, and will literally explode if water gets into the batteries, which happens a lot-and they are hard af to put out lol.

EVs no longer cost twice as much as gas cars - and they perform better [faster/more torque] and are way cheaper to maintain.[simpler/less maintenance] It doesn't cost as much to charge as filling a tank. How many people do you know who keep gas cars more than a decade? comes out about the same. EVs are not "just as bad for the environment" and you certainly don't have to use a power grid still running on fossil fuels. True, BuilderofRat, better battery reclaiming practices are needed, but a HUGE number of these are being produced [not just for cars], so they'll have to solve the problem. So they will. @robert its more like spending a dollar to save a thousand, long term.
@mfenix911
@mfenix911 2 ай бұрын
@@jv-lk7bc Yeah, there are cheaper EV's and you could get a solar panel system to charge it if you have an extra $40k to spend on that. They go through tires faster because they are so heavy. Gas cars last forever if people take care of them, most people just choose to get a new car every 5-10 years. I'm not saying EV's are bad forever, they'll probably be a good option or the only option when we inevitably run out of oil in 100 years or so, but they aren't practical for most people right now-especially if you ever need to drive across the country.

Scotty, really nice presentation - I worked in the Energy Industry for over 40 years, from in and around Oil Refineries to Captain of Drill Ships, drilling in water over a mile deep. It’s a fascinating industry. Now retired, I now find myself on a planning board tasked with approving massive industrial scale Solar Projects. Every form of energy development has its positive and negative impacts but without it there is no economy. Electric Car adoption to scale will require massive amounts of additional electricity. I’ve seen “green energy projects” that involve clear cutting and bulldozing hundreds of acres of forest. There is no free lunch.

In all modes of transportation, we cannot escape physics. Heavier than necessary cars with too much power - EV or gas - is where we are all guilty of ignoring our personal responsibilities. Sure we've improved since a 5500 pound Cadillac Coupe with Fins of 1960 getting 11 mpg. But hitting a pothole at 100 mph in any vehicle is no casual encounter. Very few places are safe enough to endeavor speeds over 100 mph, but to push 4500 pounds+ - Tesla Curb Weight - requires lots of energy. Even more energy in traffic, stopping and starting. Smaller cars, under 2,000 pounds curb weight. Smaller well built engines and motors and transmission systems. We cannot drill our way out of trouble. We must all grow up.

True, there is no free lunch, but resources, now used for drilling, refining, storing, distributing and delivering, gas, could be gradually redirected towards renewable development, and electric infrastructure. I respect your expertise in the industry, so surely you are aware that even if we didn't build any more renewable sources, every barrel of fossil energy, goes much further when powering an efficient turbine (to produce electricity) when compared to burning in an ICE. The infrastructure will get built.

I’m 71 when I was in high school I worked at the Standard station they used to make the money in the back room and fixing cars and we also had a contract for starting cars in winter over at Allstate insurance headquarters. I go over there with a F250 Ford with the jumper unit in the back of the truck and somebody’s car and start, I jump and get it going for free. It was a contract and we sold candy bar cigarettes, milk, bread, eggs, but it was very competitive with the gas. We had Gas wars. It Scotty probably remembers this standard would have a guy comes to the gas station and unmarked car to see how the service was and he would grade you without you knowing it and then the state once in a while would send cars in the gas stations unmarked to see if they were getting the right quantity of gas out of the pumps and that the meters weren’t messed up.

The embargo caused: Severe energy shortages over the winter of 1973-74, High inflation A global recession A drastic alteration in most countries' balance of payments The 55 mph speed limit Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act The introduction of the modern energy era. You do not need 6X as many fast-chargers since most EVs get the bulk of their charging done either at home or destinations using 1.2-7kW L1/L2 EVSE as that is almost mandatory for EVs to make economic sense. In my area, fast-charging faster than 70kW is more expensive than gas on non-Tesla charging networks. The large portion of EVs that doesn't need fast-charging for everyday driving is a good part of the reason why fast-charging networks charge so much for energy. Got to make their profit on the portion of the fleet that does stop by on a regular basis.

Great video. A few thoughts: needing more charging stations compared to pumps assumes the pumps are being used 100% of the time. Many pumps have a large period of idle or non use. Another thought is one can charge his car at night, at home. This reduces the number of times a charging station is needed. As the number of EVs increase we will need more stations, but perhaps not as many as you are predicting. For now, I like my gas Toyota vehicles.

You can make gasoline out of ANY crude oil, even out of natural gas or coal. "Only" thing you need is the correctly adapted multi-billion refineries. And current (EPA and other unconstitutional "agencies") regulations make it impossible to build a new refinery in the U.S., even modify significantly an existing one. Aside of the economic considerations, naturally.... We rather export our liquids, and import some others, to feed our existing refineries. What a screwed up system we have.

Your numbers for the number of charging stations is way off. 95% of charging is done at home and not the station. Some cars are down to a 10 minute charge so it is only double and not six times. Faster charging times will start to become more common. If you are going on a long trip and stop at Bucees, you plug in and then go into the store. The average stay is more like 30 minutes. This is more than enough time to charge up. Parking spots just end up with chargers. In the gas model, you pump up and then go park. So you don't need any extra space. You also don't need large underground tanks. You don't get contaminated soils etc. In many ways, it makes for a better business model.

Why are taxpayers paying for their milk, cereal, formula, diapers, bread....? Why couldn't those people buy their own groceries? Years later I worked for Walmart and cigarettes were $18 per carton.
