I agree completely with your explanation why is worthless to put fancy headers on your (gasoline powered) car, BUT a high performance exhaust manifold works well, very well in big Diesel engines. Friend of mine gain 70-80 hp and 350-400lb/ft of torque on his Cat C 15 engine, plus his fuel mileage was Improved by 10-15%.So, in some cases and for some engines and applications high performance manifolds are very effective and efficient way to make your life easier (as a truck driver). Thanks for sharing your experience with us!I've learned a lot from you! Keep doing it!👍🍻

My '68 Cortina GT had headers from the factory -- so there was no "Mileage Increase". Heavily modified FORD 460 cu.ins. -- no headers -- ported the intake and exhaust ports on the heads, and match-ported the ceramic-coated exhaust manifolds. Better flow without the underhood furnace temps that you get with the long-tube headers. Desert Racer -- Long tube headers with straight pipe all the way back -- roomy engine compartment gave a plenty of air circulation and kept underhood temps way down.

@crimsonlight4205
@crimsonlight4205 Жыл бұрын
@@SlikLizrd well sure, in heavily modified vehicles you won’t notice any mileage gains… since it’s heavily modified your obviously not casually driving around right? And switching from headers to headers…. Well it’s pretty simple to see why that didn’t net you much gains anywhere…. Also all that porting when you could’ve just spent the extra $100 on a set of ceramic coated headers which would drastically reduce under hood temps, hell you can touch them after you shut the car off in about 10 minutes or so
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd Жыл бұрын
@@crimsonlight4205 It's all good, Red -- We obviously have a difference of opinion regarding the value of long-tube headers on a street-driven vehicle. Incidentally -- headers need to be port-matched, just like regular manifolds.
@crimsonlight4205
@crimsonlight4205 Жыл бұрын
@@SlikLizrd I’m just sayin, if your trying get all you can get out of a car then it’s worth it for some ceramic headers, but like you said if it’s mostly street driven hell, the way you did it is perfect. Headers have much better flow than factory manifolds (on most cars) so even port matching the manifold doesn’t help much since it’s extremely restrictive. Did you have the ceramic coat done by someone or did you do it yourself? If you did it yourself where’d you get it from? I’m looking to coat a set of headers on my boat but I’d rather do it myself than find a shop 3 hours away ( I live in the middle of nowhere) and haven’t decided on what to use.

@@Chriskelly19067 If you're building your cars engine and it has efi you'll need a tune regardless. You can either wrap your headers or heat shield everything around them for relatively low cost. So this video only applies to a small, small portion of people that don't do proper research before hand. Headers on a stock engine are only rational in you're slowly building your car and want to build the engine later down the line. If you even know what long tube headers are, chances are you're not completely naive when it comes to building an engine. And if you're building your engine it would be absolutely ludicrous to put your factory manifolds and exhaust system back on.
@FineW_TurboM111
@FineW_TurboM111 4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Frank the only thing headers do is to help extracting exhausts from the cylinder and helps in decreasing workload to remove them. After the headers has helped remove the exhaust gases you have more cylinder space for more clean air, and some vacuum to help get that air in there. What is needed then is slight bit more fuel and some timing settings that the ECU in most cases can handle, not perfectly but it can. If you want to get the most out of headers, install better cams and tune the car for optimal horsepower during certain loads, with this you can gain som mpg if the timing is set right and you are running high octane fuel.

Modern cars already have a header design from the factory. A lot of times made from cast iron. The old log type exhaust manifolds were quite restrictive but cheap to manufacture. Scotty’s wrong about headers only being effective for high end power. There are small diameter tube headers as well as pipe length choices to the collector to improve low and mid range performance. Also, the ecm can compensate in most cases when an aftermarket header is put on that only changes the flow characteristics on a minor level. Heat can be suppressed by wrapping headers with heat tape or using a ceramic coated header. For performance, it’s better anyway. A header is more effective if you keep the heat inside. Using the right header and exhaust is one of the cheapest performance mods that can yield the biggest gains without tearing into the engine. This is assuming the factory exhaust is restrictive.

In summary: Headers increase power output. Got it. Thanks Scotty.
@marshalllhiepler
@marshalllhiepler 5 жыл бұрын
@HexagramMan, All aftermarket header manufacturers use dynometer data to market their exhaust products. Many products are compared by independent test facillities as well. Thus, the information is easily available to anyone willing to look at it. Exhaust scavaging is a complex matter that most do not fully comprehend. However, one thing is certain; if a vehicle owner installs a quality namebrand exhaust header that has been designed specifically for their vehicle, and for the RPM range intended, an increase in power output will be realized. That said, it should also be noted that the remaining factory components will then pose a "restriction" to the potential benefits that are offered by exhaust upgrades. Thus, the normal course of vehicle modification for the average car enthusiast, is to upgrade system components in stages; as time and budget factors permit. However, to make the broad and erroneous assertion that an exhaust header offers zero performance benefits, without additional component modifications is simply inaccurate. It would be better stated: "Relatively small power gains will be realized by modifying individual, isolated components. Whereas, multiple system mods that compliment the flow characteristics of the complete system is the key to obtaining the most gains from ones' vehicle." I think what you meant to say is: "To install a header alone may provide a meager 5% increase. However, to expect that increase to be 20 or 30% is stupid."

Sounds exactly like what my dad told me when I was 15 and wanted headers for my 4x4. I did it anyways and I still do it today and I’m 32 now. It’s like a habit. I think I’m getting old now though because even though I still put them on, I curse the damn things to hell every time I gotta change the plugs. Not to mention all the hassle you have to go through with re-tightening the flange and collector bolts constantly, putting fiberglass sleeves on your plug wires, and even having to run those stupid expensive short plugs which I find really aren’t much shorter than normal plugs. I’ve actually come to regret putting them on my 96 vortec this year, damn things keep springing leaks like an old garden hose. If the manifolds weren’t cracked, I’d have just left it stock.

Also claims people put there headers on after they mount the turbo, because everyone knows exactly where there turbo headers will mount up to and have to do absolutely no plumbing. Tuning is tuning, just because you haven't used a uego gauge and a laptop to adjust your a/f trims doesn't mean it's any harder than turning a flat head Scotty.

I've done extensive flow-bench tests on heads with headers attached and have used that data to match each tube to each port for the best flow throughout the valve travel. It amazes me how much can be gained and where you can get it. Now, yes, he is correct about reprogramming the fuel and timing map to match the new exhaust flow, but not completely. A lot can be gained with small tweaks without a re-map, a lot can be gained in terms of low to midrange torque by redesigning your exhaust without sacrificing anything, a lot can be gained by feeding them cooler air, and guess what? Most newer performance engines come with factory stainless headers and cold air intakes as-is. To be more in depth, modern ecm's are entirely self tuning to a point. If you don't freak them out by doing too much, they will correct themselves up to a certain point. Scotty, I appreciate your knowledge and experience, and enjoy watching. But man, dial back the fanaticism a little, I think it put some folks on the defensive.

You can have a catt on the exhaust system instead of the header and also they do sell performance headers w/catt depending whats available for your vehicle. Headers stay cooler than the stock manifold. I drive 70-110miles every week day. I've saved gas using a header with a tune. Also my Engine bay isnt as hot compared to the stock manifold. I know that because I've driven the same routes with my performance headers and my stock manifold. If you want to run a header/headers as a daily with low volume, i suggest installing a muffler, catt, and/or resonator on your exhaust system.

Like he said....back in the 50, 60,70's and 1980... yes - headers were a good thing. If you have an early muscle car - it might be a good thing to do, still! But remember, most of those old engines were N/A - naturally aspirated, If you have a car with turbos or super chargers...the real horsepower comes from install a bigger power adder, now if you need headers to install the bigger turbo ... then why pay for the hears twice? Listen to what Scotty said...headers - by themself - are wasted money on the "newer cars" ... meaning anything made after 1990'somethings - to 2000's... until you change some other "expensive" parts and upgrade the ECU...computers and change the program tune to match. Note: the Internet was only getting started since 1995. There was not such thing as You tube. If you wanted to know "stuff" you had to read a book. If you could find one that was worth reading. Fuel injection was still mechanical, there were no MAF, MAP no open source computer controls and no one was making the bigger injectors, fuel pumps or knew how to design return style fuel systems ... that came later, much later...much, much, later! However, the old Foxbody mustangs were the beginning of factory installed tubular headers, which they put on the early 5.0 overhead valve engines. They were not full length headers - but they were tubular headers. The Japanese, and other smaller engines started putting them on their 4-cylinder cars - because they are cheaper to make. There ain't much "cheap" horsepower in newer car engines any more. Last I heard - figure about $35 - $40 (with newer cars, maybe even $80, $90 or $100) per horsepower is what it'll cost to hop up/modify newer engines. If you need someone else to install the parts "for you"...then figure shop time will start at $60 - $100+ per hour... based on where you live and what you need installed. If its dealer installed...bring your own grease... 'cause it'll be even more painful! Newer engines don't leave a lot of "cheap" horsepower on the table any more. The best you can expect (from a 4-cylinder engine) is maybe an extra 5 or 10 horsepower, by changing headers, removing the cats and putting on a $500 - $1000 exhaust system. Now you can make a hella' lot more noise - but no mater what "they say", more noise is not equal to a bunch more horsepower... at least - not until you change other things too.

How about equal length ceramic shorty headers on a 2002 f150 5.4 liter ? I've already done a 2.5" flowmaster Cat-Back system, MagnaFlow high flow cats so would make sense to finish out with headers.. specifically shorties because of fitment & useful range of HP and torque. Would likely do 1 3/4"

Generally I would agree with Scotty. Here is the exception. I have a 1964 Ford Pickup F250. Originally it had a cross over pipe. I bought a set of headers from LMC and installed duel pipes. I replaced the points with an electronic Igniter. I put a higher volt coil. I replaced the spark plugs with Autolite Platinum Plugs. I updated the 2 barrel to a 4 barrel Holly carburetor. I replaced the differential from a 410 ratio to a 373 ratio. And went from the original 3 on the tree to a 4 on the floor manual transmission with a granny gear for 1st. I replaced all the split rim wheels to regular wheels and just recently put 4 new Bridgestone tires from Costco. My next project is putting new Monroe shocks on when O'Reilly's. Bought a brand-new Ford Cortina GT in '68 -- it had a butter-smooth 4-speed, Radial tires, Disc brakes, Weber carb, and a Long-Tube Header -- on the 1.6-Liter, 4-cylinder engine -- from the factory in England. I made a ram-air/ cold air intake for it, but never dyno'ed the results. I wrapped the header with asbestos cloth to keep the under-hood temperatures down, so as not to defeat my home-made CAI, which drew air from under the front bumper. Five (5) trips cross-country from Philly to L.A. -- before we had all the freeways -- was a blast to drive, and I'd sure like to get my hands on another one ! That was my first and only vehicle with a factory-installed Header. I installed a Long Tube Header on my '74 Toyota FJ-40, along with a re-ground Cam, Offenhauser Dual-Port Intake Manifold, modified Holley 4-bbl, Electronic distributor, HONE Overdrive, and open Glasspack Muffler. In all, I have had good results and no problems with running headers -- BUT -- neither installation involved headers on BOTH SIDES of the engine compartment, such as with The 95 MERC's V-8 engine and crowded engine bay. I would advise against putting Long-Tube Headers on our 2-ton Panthers -- As for Catalytic Converter removal -- it's illegal in all states, whether you have emissions testing or not -- and it's STUPID to think that you are not destroying the very air that we ALL need to breathe.

The ECU's learning tables should be able to cope with a 10% change in airflow, just need to give it time to re-learn trim tables after the modifications. That's the same reason why modern engines that spring a new air leak run poorly for a short while, then run "normally" once the ECU catches up with the leak, run poorly again when the worsening leak(s) exceed the ECU's adjustment range and still run poorly after the leaks are fixed until the ECU is reset or is given enough time to re-learn its post-fix trims.
@RWoody1995
@RWoody1995 5 жыл бұрын
The thing is, all the parameters the ECU can adjust to compensate for these things each have limits to how far up and down they can adjust. So sure while it might compensate now, when the engine gets a bit older or even other things like fluctuations in fuel quality, oil quality, air quality it will end up also having to compensate for them but if its already maxed out or nearly maxed out a setting to compensate for the change in airflow it's got no room to compensate for those other things.
@Inisfad

Teardown Dan Or else the ECU just reverts to pre-set parameters, so that the engine runs rich, has poor gas mileage and loses power, rather than ‘self adjusting’.

@@williambuttlicker9890 Not looking to argue about what can and can't be done on your car to increase performance. The real issue just comes down to how much cash you have to spend on increasing the power of your engine. For most of us (including the audience that these videos are geared towards... your backyard mechanic.... not a Nascar racing team) going into custom programming and high performance computer upgrades is far beyond what these videos are directed towards. The point made in this video is that simple mechanical bolt ons (headers) on modern cars is not a good idea. Of course if (like yourself) you have deep pockets and can afford all the other modifications and tuning that would then be required... sure... go for it. But with such resources and knowledge why would you start your project with a stock engine and start having to remove and replace part when you could be building your high performance engine from the ground up?
