I retired from working in an oil refinery. I worked in the testing lab, testing gasoline. Ethanol is not an octane booster, it is a government mandated rule for air pollution mitigation. It reduces the amount of carbon monoxide in the exhaust. Premium gasoline will generally have the smallest amount of ethanol in it, fairly often it has none. That is what I run in our car and every small engine. The octane isn't needed, but I do not want ethanol in the gasoline I use.

This is interesting to learn because after ethanol sitting in an unused car messed up the fuel system, I began to only use ethanol-free fuel, which is about $1 more per gallon than regular gas. I discovered the engine runs smoother with ethanol-free and it gets slightly better miles per gallon. I think premium gas is maybe 50¢ cheaper per gallon than ethanol-free and perhaps 50¢ more per gallon than regular gas; maybe I should try it.

Ethanol also degrades and damages aluminum... That's why you cannot use street gasoline in piston engined aircraft. You realize that fuel is still a 10% ethanol file. A fact of life is that ethanol is cleaner and keeps injector / carb parts cleaner. However, if you leave ethanol fuels sitting a longer time, the corrosive ethanol evaporates, corrodes some internal aluminum and cheap brass parts, but leaves a varnish as the gasoline evaporates. Ethanol by is self has more octane, so it’s actually an octane booster. Top-Tier fuel like Costco sells is a premium fuel and contains Techron. The big problem with ethanol is when it sits unused in a motor / fuel tank ethanol ( all alcohols ) are hydrophilic and bind with moisture in the air. In a closed fuel system this really isn’t a problem.

Reminds me of my '84 Toyota diesel pickup I bought new. I owned a small car repair shop and got it to pull cars it to fix them. I home built an all steel 12 ft goose neck trailer for it, 4 inch I-beam frame, 12 ft 10 inch short sided channels for ramps, and a ramsey winch that pulled in and reeled out with the electric motor (no brake) in the goose neck. It didn't even know that a car and trailer was being pulled, that much torque in that 2'4 liter overhead cam belt drive engine that got 30 mpg out of it. Best vehicle I ever owned, and put OVER 800 K on it before the box frame under it rusted totally in two, and the engine was still running. Vive la Toyota.

if your vehicle will run on 87 without detonating, or pre-igniting, use it, if your car does pre-ignite, or detonate, use premium. Forget about that mid grade, you do not know what percentage of premium is blended with regular to get that mix.. You do not get more power with premium fuel. All premium does is prevent you from losing power. If you have a vehicle that is prone to detonation or preignition. That’s all premium does, is keep you from losing power.

I bought the E85 pump assembly for our 2002 Chrysler, even though not a Flex-fuel model, since less expensive than the regular one and figured it had better plastics to survive ethanol. Fit fine and no problems in 5 years since. Only downside might be that the pump has higher volume since E85 needs a higher flowrate. Congress is pondering allowing up to 20% ethanol (E20), since the EPA claims it won't hurt normal cars.

Back before self-service you had to watch out for gas jockies 'hanging the pump'. This would happen when the customer before you only wanted a dollar or two of gas. The attendant would not reset the pump to zero, and hang the pump so that when he put it in your car, it would start at $1 or $2. If you weren't observant or did not know how much gas you tank held, you would pay the extra money which the attendant would pocket.

I switched gas brands and the gas dealer gave me cases of additive in quart bottles. I would dump x amount of additives in quarts into the fuel tanks before a delivery of gas was dumped to sweeten the gas.. I got to say, my unleaded ran better than the other unleaded in the area. Yeah I was spiking the additive but it sure ran good.

the new lead additive, which was intended to be used in gasoline, was already considered toxic and harmful to health even before it was added to the fuel,

They probably only used lead cause mercury is too toxic.

lol yes I don’t think they are going to throw in some free additives. The price for Techron is the same as the cheap station across the street.

Not only is Scotty the most knowledgeable car, gas, and oil man that I have even heard of, he seems to have a ton of energy and of course charisma! If you can’t just love this guy then you’re spending too much time on your bicycle instead of driving your wonderful automobile! 😂

question. here in Louisville, Ky. i use Octane 87. go out west to Colo or New Mexico, the stations have Octane 86 . the next up out in Colo or New Mexico is Octane 88. I would use Octane 88 out there and when i get farther back east go back to Octane 87.

All I put in my 2016 Audi A3 is Sheetz unleaded 88 E15 it's always 10-20 cents cheaper than 87 and I always get an additional 8 cents off with the combination of my loyalty card and some rewards points. I haven't had any problems with it for my car. Owners manual says it okay too.
