I retired from working in an oil refinery. I worked in the testing lab, testing gasoline. Ethanol is not an octane booster, it is a government mandated rule for air pollution mitigation. It reduces the amount of carbon monoxide in the exhaust. Premium gasoline will generally have the smallest amount of ethanol in it, fairly often it has none. That is what I run in our car and every small engine. The octane isn't needed, but I do not want ethanol in the gasoline I use.

You realize that fuel is still a 10% ethanol file. A fact of life is that ethanol is cleaner and keeps injector / carb parts cleaner. However, if you leave ethanol fuels sitting a longer time, the corrosive ethanol evaporates, corrodes some internal aluminum and cheap brass parts, but leaves a varnish as the gasoline evaporates. Ethanol by is self has more octane, so it’s actually an octane booster. Top-Tier fuel like Costco sells is a premium fuel and contains Techron. The big problem with ethanol is when it sits unused in a motor / fuel tank ethanol ( all alcohols ) are hydrophilic and bind with moisture in the air. In a closed fuel system this really isn’t a problem.

I ran a full service car wash in the early 90's. Back in those days, the oil company ran your credit cards for you. You used the CC revenue to buy your gas. I switched gas brands and the gas dealer gave me cases of additive in quart bottles. I would dump x amount of additives in quarts into the fuel tanks before a delivery of gas was dumped to sweeten the gas.. I got to say, my unleaded ran better than the other unleaded in the area. Yeah I was spiking the additive but it sure ran good.
