I'm a chemist and have worked in a lab testing gasoline and diesel. This is for the protection of the consumers in our state. I'm pretty sure most states have a lab to do this. Most of the information in your video is correct and very useful. Thank you for making sure to emphasize the octane rating you see at the pump is NOT the energy content of the gas. It's all pretty much the same between 87 and 93, unless of course it has a higher percentage of ethanol (Uh can we say E-85? why would someone run this fuel 🙄). Ethanol will decrease the amount of energy in the gasoline, but it's added to make the gasoline burn cleaner and is good up to 10%. Something you didn't emphasize enough though is what "octane rating" actually is. It is NOT the amount of octane in the gasoline. There is little to no octane actually in gasoline (octanes are eight carbon hydrocarbons). The octane rating is the "equivalent amount of octane" in the fuel so that will resists knocking as if it contained that percent of octane. Gasoline is mostly made up of mixtures of toluene, and xylenes. If you ran pure toluene as your gasoline, you'd be getting about a 110 octane rating, but this wouldn't necessarily be good for your engine. When gasoline is made, the manufacturers control the mixture of hydrocarbons to get a clean burn and the proper vapor pressure (vapor pressure is the pressure of the vaporized gas above the liquid, not to be confused with the engine pressure). Also the gasoline must be protected from oxidation (this is why you add fuel stabilizer when storing for a long time) and contamination like water or particulates. Every brand of gasoline has slightly different proprietary ingredients to do this (as you've said at about 6 minutes). Also, the time of year will dictate what vapor pressure the gasoline manufacturers must make the gasoline to deliver to the consumer. Forget octane boosters. A pint of octane booster won't raise the octane rating of a full tank of fuel enough to make a difference. If you have a high performance engine that's been engineered for high compression, you're going to know you need a higher octane rated fuel. You aren't going to hit that 87 button. Are you?🤔 By the way, most mid-grade pumps, mix (in the pump itself) two parts of 87 with one part of 93 to get 89. But if you look at the price per gallon, they usually give you the "mid-price" between 87 and 93 for the 89. You'd be better off cost wise, by pumping 10 gallons of 87 and 5 gallons of 93 if you really want 89. I suppose mixing it well enough in the tank might be problematic for the first few miles. Really, you didn't need the 89 anyways. Octane Rating Tests Explained: One more thing you didn't explain well was how we get the octane rating in the USA. Yes RON stands for Research Octane Number. It refers to an actual test engine and ASTM method D-2699 for testing the octane rating of spark ignition fuels. My lab uses a RON called a Waukesha RON engine. It varies the compression of the cylinder to make the fuel knock while holding other variables at constant values (temperature, fuel/air mix, engine speed, etc). There is another test engine my lab uses, it's called a MON or Motor Octane Number engine and ASTM method D-2700. It too is a Waukesha engine that varies the compression of the cylinder but holds those variables at different values, mostly the engine speed is faster on the MON (900 rpm instead of the RON's 600 rpm), but I believe the inlet temperature of the RON is also kept higher. The RON and MON tests give slightly different results for octane rating due to the differences in these other variables. MON is always lower than the RON, by about 10 octane ratings if I remember correctly. In the USA, when you see the (R + M)/2 on the pump's octane rating label, it's telling you that the gasoline is rated by testing by both the RON and MON methods, and the final number you get is the average of the two test results. I rarely hear this average referred to as "PON", but I know it's not PUMP Octane Number. I had to look that up and if you want to trust Wikipedia it stands for "Posted Octane Number". In Europe, they only test with the RON method, as you've said, so this is why their octane ratings are higher. They don't have the lower MON test averaged into their octane rating. Great information in your video for all consumers. I gave it a thumbs up. 👍

In Norway we have 95E10 and 98E5. 98 is actually ethanol free in Norway, but due to EU regulations we have to label the pumps with E5. The reason why we have 98 as ethanol free is because we have a lot of older cars that usually are parked during the winter. E10 is not good for older engines, and specially if the vehicle is parked during winter. Now we are working on getting 98 into more stations, as more and more people use it.
@MutheiM_Marz Жыл бұрын
Asia have almost the same standard, We have E20, Gasohol 91, G95 and pure 98. E20 is 98 mixes with 20% Ethanol, G91 is your E10 and G95 is your E5. I do believe that the more ethanol the less energy because ethanol have less energy that petrol.

The Shell V-power a.k.a. premium E-5 is the regular fuel from before 2019. That means that if you're driving a car that's older than 2019 and it says to use E-10(Euro 95) choose E-5(Euro 98 / V-power or premium. so E-5(Euro98) is the old E-10(Euro95).

Can you do a video on supermarket fuel vs branded fuel. Because I was running asda supermarket fuel and even though it was the cheapest option in my area I realised that my fuel was running out quickly in comparison to shell fuel even though I'm technically getting less fuel for my money with shell.... And also I noticed on a different occasion that after running tesco momentum 99 supermarket fuel after about three tanks my engine started to sound a bit rough, but after returning back to shell fuel my engine became much smoother again... So I know that supermarket fuel is definitely not as good as branded fuel... Would you do a video on that...?

It reminds me about a Honda Civic I bought and the motor was shacking and they’ve never been able to fix it. They told me that they never fixed motors, they were changing them instead because they rarely had problems with motors. In the end, I tried Gold instead of Regular and the motor was almost not shaking. When I changed it 2 1/2 years later, I gave it with a fill tank. 2-3 weeks later the guy who bought it called me and asked if it was normally shaking 😅 he filled it up with Regular at his first visit to the gaz station. I told him I always used Gold… It was in the 90s and one of their mechanics once told me that even Honda had lemons and they didn’t know how to fix them :-). True story… it was a 93 I think

I use premium because i do not drive but maybe 150 miles a month. I use sta-bl fuel additive to save the life of fuel. I do have higher use from time to time but 80% of the time is 150 or less miles. I bough a used ford explorer in 2012 with 197686 miles for $1000. It had not been taken care of. I fixed the problems it had. Front end comletely replaced. $575 in parts. Saved $1000. Drained all the fluids including the gas tank. Changed all the belts and hoses. Cleaned the fuel system, replaced all the bosch platinum plugs and wires. Fixed intake leak in gasket. Vacvumed car and washed it. Paint was in bad shape when i bought it. I stripped the paint and repainted with primer 5 coats and 4 coats of clear coat. I did it myself. I saved $1500 new tires and bought tire covers. The vehicle by blue book is not worth but $2000. But this Explorer is in better shape than most newly boight vehicles it gets 23 mpg and 14 city. Owners manual says its duppose to get 19 hwy and 11 in city. If people would just take care of their vehicles they will last. I don't have thousand of $ in tools either. I have good tools that are good enough for the job. If my parts are stress parts a bought better quality tools for those parts. I may have a $1000 in tools $400 just for a tool box to hold them. I do all my own repar work on both my vehicles my second carcis a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan bought for $2000 cash. It needed drivers sliding door repaired. Did it myself and saved $1100 dollars in repairs. New alternator save $ 525 in repairs good qualty tires saved $1500. Shop around. Deals are out here. Had TIMP defect from factory. Repaired it saved $1400 oil pump saved $400. Both vehicles run and drive like new.

For those of you who want a bit more clarification about the different fuel octane ratings: PON (Pump Octane Number) = RdON (Road Octane Number) = AKI (Anti-Knock Index) = (R+M)/2 These are all the exact same octane rating you might see in the US (AKI and (R+M)/2 being the most common) which is the calculated average between RON (Research Octane Number) (used in Europe) (Performance at low speed & low temp) and MON (Motor Octane Number) (Performance at high speed & high temp). AKA (R+M)/2 (add the numbers up and divide by 2).

No one EVER told me to look for what type of fuel I should use on my gas cap or my manual. I'm a 63 year old woman and obviously clueless. lol. I do have a question, though, @ChrisFix... and hope you'll see this and answer. I've been using the mid-grade Plus fuel type. If I should've been using Regular all along, does this mean I've been causing damage to my engine? You mentioned using regular when you should use premium may cause damage, but didn't mention the opposite... for someone clueless like me, I'd love to know the answer. Appreciate the video... if enough people watch it, could be a great time to buy stock in Shell. I'll be going there or perhaps to Speedway from now on, as someone mentioned it's also great gas with additives... is that true too, @ChrisFix? Appreciate the info... Using mid grade in a car that requires regular won't hurt anything, but it is extra money for almost 0 or 0 gain so you are better off switching to regular. And as long as the fuel contains the necessary additives (or more like in this case) you will be good to go!

When I had a small 25mph moped, that had a govener, if I bought regular gas it only went 25mph, but when I bought premium, it went as fast as 28mph. This was a big jump for a moped, even though all the mechanics said that the gas would not make a difference.

“We changed something but there’s NO difference”, yeah, that logic hardly ever holds

Small bike engines, and motorcycles have very high compression ratios, which is needed to gain power from higher octane gas. The minimum to benefit from 93 octane is 12.75 to 1 if I remember correctly. The thing about gasoline is the octane rating is measured NOT accounting for the ethanol lowering it a bit. So theoretically any car could gain from midgrade gas, although it wouldn’t be much. After what ethanol did to my Hyundai Accent, I only put ethanol free gas in my cars now.
@Chevsilverado3 жыл бұрын
@@rowlandbuck2703 Ignition timing also makes a difference to how much octane you need. If his moped was knocking enough to lose significant power then it would’ve been noticeably misfiring or if it ran with that much knock with no knock sensors trying to adjust for it the engine would be toast.

@@rowlandbuck2703 not exactly, I had a 95 trans am and it had to have 93, if I had a lower octane it wouldn’t ignite every time and would skip. It was stock like 9.5:1 compression so it’s not always determined by compression

I've noticed switching from ethanol to non-ethanol my engines run smoother leading to excessive speed. @@johnlourenco5657 Not saying regular is a bad gas, government regs, just saying I like the extra smoothness. When I was a cert mechanic in the 80's and 90's, I ran AV gas at 110 octane most of the time, you could balance a nickle on the air cleaner it was so smooth. You could run Quaker State oil and it may gum up some but the insides would be sparkling in a breakdown other than the valve train area in the head/s. Last breakdown was a couple years ago using premium ethanol and it was still clean inside, just how I like it. But I don't abuse my stuff anymore and don't currently have a race car but parts for one.... or 2
@tinamcgarrah77942 жыл бұрын
Good thing computer controlled cars have knock sensors that pretty much eliminated the pre ignition. But if you buy a car that in the owners manual says mid grade 89, or Premium 91 and higher, don't complain if you have to pay extra for every gallon. You can definitely run the 87 in it and will work just fine until you want to get on it, That is where the higher octane comes in to play... I just run MARVEL Mystery Oil in the gas to lubricate upper cylinders, valves, and piston tops. Especially is good stuff for fuel injectors ! A quality "PEA" included fuel cleaner or" Techron" once or twice a year, really helps cleaning up everything in there too if you really think you need it.. If you drive alot and are constantly filling up your tank and just rotating fuel thru it, and do a good Italian Tune-Up out on the highway every once in awhile, most (regular) cars are just fine on 87. Hi- Performance cars are called that for a reason and buy at your own expense. It's cars that sit with this crappy 10% ethanol diluted fuel that causes problems! Government regulations require cleaners and beneficial products in all grades of gasoline. If I was as rich as the Bidens I'd have AV fuel delivered to my giant underground plastic storage tank, and run that in my lawnmowers too. Unfortunately for me I'm not! This is great information, and Chris touched on additives a little bit, but I feel like he left an important part out. Yes, you do go with the gasoline octane level that your car manufacturer recommends, but some gas stations have additives added to all three levels of gasoline, and some don't. The ones that do are called 'Top tier'. I only get gas from Top tier gas stations. In the video, he's at a Shell gas station, which is a Top tier gas station, so even if you get regular gas from them, it has the additives that will keep your valves clean. You can do a search online to find out what gas stations are Top tier.

I know from personal experience about Shell. I drive a Ford with a 3.0 engine which runs on any economy fuel. However my girlfriend has a 6 cylinder Jeep she bought new. She was having problems and the dealer told her it was the fuel pump which was "starting to go". This Jeep already had the transmission replaced at 3 months and head gasket at about a year. This was her work vehicle and they quoted 3-400 for a new fuel pump installed. He jeep was fuel sensitive, the additives used in our town didn't work too well, but the next town north(different distribution point) worked better. I suggested she try the Shell economy fuel, it was the same price or 2 cents more to see if there was a difference. She tried a tank and there was no difference, on the second tankful the problems went away. It ran better and her problem fuel pump lasted another 6 years.She still has it, going on 20 years and she had to stop using Shell, n stations around here anymore

My experience on this is that I had a vehicle throw a P0420 code, turned out to be the Catalytic Converter. After exclusively burning premium for over a year, I never saw that code again.
