"Even Volvo", WTF? Volvo have made some of if not the best 5 cylinder engines, period (even Ford used the Volvo 5 cylinder engines). They are SUPER smooth (almost as smooth as 6), sound great at idle and under acceleration. They made them from the early 90's right up until recently (almost every engine they made in the era was a 5, 4's and 6's much less common)..... Only ended due to Volvo being a small company and needing to rationalise cost. Quite sad really to see such a beautiful engine die for cost savings.

@@audex Your a clown. Volvo transmissions don't fail any differently than others. Neglect due to not doing fluid changes. Do your research, Volvo make manual transmissions in-house, but the auto transmissions are either GM or Aisin Warner (same as used in a huge variety of vehicles). If anything, the Aisin Warner transmissions fail earlier in Volvo's than other makes like Toyota because the Toyota's have no Torque, whereas Volvo has embraced Turbo Charging decades ahead of most others. Maintain your transmission and change the fluid every 30-40 K miles and mostly it's going to be just fine (except the GM transmission in earlier T6 models, which is apparently good once rebuilt with the GM HD kit). It's not a hard concept.

@@imnoahc I've owned an S70 2.4 10 valve with 140hp or so. It sounds real good and from what i know they are quite bulletproof motors, like most old volvo engines are. And dont mistake "european luxury cars" like mercedes or audi with volvo. Volvos have a very good reputation for reliability and lowish maintenance costs compared to germans. And they are (atleast older ones) less luxurious, but more reliable and less prone to rust. The downside on older volvos is the sluggishness and high fuel consumption. But in my opinion on you going for a mitsubishi was a safe bet. You cannot beat the japanese in build quality, reliability, fuel economy and low costs.

I have a 2007 S40 2.4i inline 5. Love the car the engine has a decent rumble to it even stock, great torque, I had it up to 180km on the hwy, driven lots of hwy, main streets and side streets and I don't get any vibration or non smooth drive at certain speeds. For the year of my car Volvo had refined their inline 5 to a really good point and used it in quite a few models. Too bad the last year they used them was 2014. The newer Volvo stuff is way too complicated and pricey venturing into unproven tech I'm not sure how well they will age but the early 2000's - 2010's are a good market, you can drive a luxury car that's actually durable and sensible unlike the German brands.

My 1983 Mercedes 300D is a better car than your Toyota Celica. Same for the 240D. It will be around for much longer and it is much easier to work on. Also, it does not need a battery to run, an alternator to run, a fuel injection control unit, an ignition control unit, a distributor or spark plugs or a transmission module. Anyway, thanks for mentioning the best cars in the world on your Channel! Also, there's nothing wrong with the 240D. They are not as slow as people say they are. Most of them just need valve adjustments and some basic maintenance and they perform just as well as any other car. Clearly you've never driven one. I used to drive a 220 D for 5 years as my daily driver with 57 horsepower. No complaints.

Diesel is a superior technology to petrol. It boggles my mind how Americans never liked Diesels. The Chevy Chevette Isuzu Diesel was getting Prius like MPG in the 1970's. The old Merc Diesels are one of the best for sure. But the Sofim Diesel engine I had in a 1990 Renault Trafic van was awesome. So was the 1.9SDi in my 02 Skoda Fabia, and currently I am running a 04 2.5 CRDI Kia Sorento which uses a Hyundai improved version of Mitsubishi 2.5 Diesel. But the Saudi's and owners of the world want to kill Diesel.

You think the Mercedes 240D couldn't get out of its own way? Ha! My father had a 1968 Mercedes 220D 4-speed manual, bought new for about $6000, as I recall. You could go from 0 to 60 MPH in a day! Yes, it was slow to accelerate, but once you hit cruising speed, like 80 MPH on rural interstate, it could hold that speed all day. (That was before the 1973 oil crisis, and the 55 limit that came with it.) It wore like iron, and was finally traded in 1980. 4-wheel disk brakes, responsive steering, and smooth riding. Diesel cars were so unusual then, we once we had a panicked gas station owner come running out when he saw his kid pumping diesel (as requested). He had visions of having to drain and replace our fuel tank on his dime.

@BuffMyRadius

6 cylinders have inherent primary balance, but not the best secondary balance because they swing pairs of pistons together. Pistons 3 and 4 swing as a pair right next to each other and sort of act like a single mass. 5 cylinder engines aren't balanced in primary forces, but they have great secondary balance so they're known for being much happier at high rpm.

Hi Scotty, thanks for your great info on car repair. As a daily driver of several cars with an Audi 5 cylinder engine since 1990, I like to add that indeed with modern turbo charged 4 cylinders, there is possibly little going for a 5 cylinder. As a car enthusiast, there is a different side to it. The ignition sequence 12453 makes it unique, and between 3500-4500 they sound better then a V8. The 80's Audi engines, with their simple Bosch K-Jetronic, keep running forever, with economic gas usage of around 28 miles per gallon. My 87 Audi 5000S is cheap to drive, and great fun as well with its 137HP. In Europe Audi sold 5 cylinder cars with carburetors, they used the Zentith 3B3 and the Keihin 28-32 models, the design of the intake manifold is essential to get it working. The power range of these 2.2 liter 5 cylinder engines ranged from 115-220 HP for street cars, and up to 750 HP for world championship rally cars.

Hello I drive a 5 cylinder Volvo XC70 2007 2.4 l turbo. Volvo started building car’s with 5 cylinder engines as far as 1939. I think their sourced them from a (german) manufacturer called Penta (penta from latin) means 5. They eventually bought them out. My Volvo has 166,000 km which some people say is the breaking in period for that car. Thank you for you videos and your no nonsense approach to things. Note: Ford also looked at 5 c engine in the 1930’s

Scotty i like jour videos, but here jou are a bit wrong and i dont agree with you. I have owned all kind of cars with: 4 cil, 5 cil, V6, straight 6, but i went back to volvo with inline 5 cil engine, because it has a beautiful sound, good gas milage and volvos 5 cil petrol engines are bullet proof, if jou know hot to maintain that engine, jeah, it has some flaws but it will last forever, and in my volvo 850 it is going prety good, even with more than a 600 000 km on it with original gearbox and engine. I also own audi 100 avant 1984 quattro C3 with 5 cil 2.2 petrol engine, and still it works fine and works beautiful after all these years and that engine is simple as can be, and saound of 5 cil engines are realy, realy beautiful. I say It is all about maintanance.

I've got a 1990 Audi 90 with the I5 2309cc 20v (7A) 170hp engine. That engine is very smooth! Crossflow head, factory stainless equal length tubular exhaust manifold, 7k rpm. Still going strong and sounds gorgeous.

Scottys got this one wrong uhhhhohhhhh the first mass produced 5 cylinder car made was in 1974 it was the Audi 5000 and 100 the 300D was after this 76 i believe was the first Audi went on to make the 5 cylinder Engine the most powerful engine in a car ever made and in 1984 The Audi Quattro S1 and S2 Group B that could handle and produce 800hp+ the 5 cylinder was like no other car power reliable and made a sound that would give a nun a wet dream

I quite like the sporty sound the Volvo transverse five makes. Ford employed them in their Focus TX5. They do sound strange as Scott says but Volvo made them acceptable to my ears. For many years British commercial diesel manufacturer Gardner made a heavy duty five for trucks, buses and marine applications. As for the fives benefits in transverse applications due to size, British Leyland made cars with a fwd transverse mounted 2.6 litre inline six in the late 60s to early 70s in their upper end models and Daewoo specially developed a 2.0 and 2.5 litre inline six for front drive applications just before takeover by GM.

I had a Colorado 4-door with the 5 cylinder. I loved it. Best highway pulls ever, and so silky smooth once you got up to speed. You could be on the interstate doing 100 mph but the thing felt like you were just taking it easy cruising down Main Street. Nice little burbles too.

Ford of Europe used the 2.5 turbo 5 pot joint engine developed with the partnership with Volvo from around 2005 to 2012. Fitted in the Mondeo mk 3 /Focus mk 2 ST/S-Max people mover/ Kuga SUV in 225 & 200 bhp states of tune. It is a super engine, smooth, great pulling power (in the family we have a Kuga and can vouch for the performance, smoothness, quality etc.) Audi developed their 5 cylinder at the end of the 70s as a way to save money and weight for the 100 executive saloon. The VW group had been losing massive amounts of money as sales of the Beatle slowed and they didn't really have anything else until the Golf became established. The 5 cylinder 2.2 ltr engine went on to power the famous rally racing Quattro.

My 240D with automatic is even slower than the 300D. My dad had a Audi 5000cs turbo. It had a 70amp cooling fan which failed and burned up the main wiring harness in a catastrophic shower of sparks. It never ran right again.

Of course. The 300D's motor has 88 horsepower vs. 67 for the 240D. Both weigh about the same, about 3200 lbs. (300Ds with manual transmissions were European-market only.)

Scotty, dude, sometimes it's best to just keep quiet if you're not 100% accurate on something. The Volvo C30 T5 is a winner. Great gas mileage, 227 HP, nice rumble to the engine, smooth yet sporty, no issues at almost 100K miles, superior passing ability...I could go on.
