Unfortunately - and I consider myself an environmentalist and a liberal - this is what happens when you let people with PoliSci degrees, who don’t know which end of the screwdriver you hold on to, WRITE THE LAWS that regulate machines. They don’t understand the limitations of the laws of physics and end up forcing the car companies to produce machines that will not last, need to be replaced or majorly overhauled earlier in life, and ultimately do SO MUCH MORE environmental damage than building a long lasting machine that gets 4-5 less MPG.

The 3.5 eco boost in the F-150’s with a rated tow capacity of up to 10K plus. The engine builder I used for years has torn many of those engines down with well under 100K with 2-3 times the wear of a V8 with 100-250K. 1366 overclocker there are different ways of keeping consistent manifold pressure like designing the cylinder head and camshaft for flow and good pressure and there is variable cam lift and phasing. A turbo seems like free power but it comes a cost, higher oil temperatures, failure of turbo, and it creates its own resistance to exhaust flow. But for increasing power, a turbo can be handy. It is more complex and expensive overall.

Hi Scotty! I used to hear my stepdad complain about gas mileage in his 1976 Caddy Sedan DeVille, with the 500 c.i. [8.4ltr.] V-8 in it. I'd tell him "what did you expect with that engine??" He talked about putting a SMALLER engine in it!!!! I was a weekend mech, so I did a little research on that. Told him with the torque that thing needed, smallest he could go would be a 472 c.i. Caddy engine!! He was NOT amused!!! Only car I ever drove that you could WATCH the gas gauge go down just normal driving it!!! Nice hunk of iron, though. Thanks Scotty!

Since the oil was low I bet the oil ran hotter and the ECU went into "limp mode" and cut the turbo boost. On my GMC truck 6.6l Diesel, lost power smoked like rolling coal. It threw a code for low boost pressure among 3 other codes, including one for the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I changed the Mass Air sensor and the other 2 codes went away with it. This was just to make the point that you said. These things are all interconnected and mess with each other. These codes oftentimes just push you in a direction, but you still need to use a little thought process to figure things out. Back in the distributor days, An old Corrolla one time developed a bad wire and misfired as it shorted to the head. Car would not run worth a crap on the other three cylinders. I presumed that the unburned fuel from the one missing cylinder was messing with the O2 sensor and it was shutting down the fuel to the whole engine. I changed the one wire, the engine ran fine after that for as long as we owned the car. (I changed the other 3 after too)

Txmj122 still you’re demanding more from the engine than you should. Even the most recent had only 185 horsepower and 184 lbft of torque. That’s not a lot to pull 4100 pounds so the engine has to do more work than if it were in a vehicle the size of a RAV4. A bigger vehicle needs a bigger engine to reduce the strain on the engine
