Important tip for preventing sealant in tubes from going bad over extended periods even when capped tight: Put the cap on but don't start threading it - keep it loose just holding it over the tip. Squeeze out sealant so it flows out from under the cap as you hold it. Push the cap on and start threading it to tighten. This purges the sealant that was exposed to air at the nozzle tip and prevents the cure process from getting started internally (catalyzed by humidity with most sealants) and makes the re-closed tube last almost as long as an unopened one.

You should never use weather stripping, it will cause the gasket to dry out early and might make for a poor fit on the next gasket if they don't take time to clean all the material you put in there. Just use a thin layer of grease or preferable Petroleum jelly which is the recommend procedure by Mercedes-Benz. The jelly will make the gasket stick to the inside of the valve cover and will not compromise the seal. Plus it has the added benefit of keeping the gasket soft from heat cycling. And if any is left on a future replacement, it will just slide off.
@Russell-rc6qq4 ай бұрын
So just to be clear here it is okay to use petroleum jelly like Vaseline here and there in moderation around where the gasket fits into the cover? I have applied some to a pliable, rubber-like gasket in a Corolla. Does it matter that the two areas where I applied RTV gasket maker has come into contact with the jelly? I have set and bolted the valve cover back together. I am waiting for the RTV to dry and I see some of the jelly emanating from this area where the RTV is at, too.

Scotty, your dad's advice is exactly the same as A.P Ershov, a Siberian computer scientist, said about finding bugs in your computer program. "Finding errors in the program is like finding mushrooms in the forest. Having found one, look for others in the same place." Very practical and very Siberian. Mushrooms indeed!

Hey Scotty, for the viewers' benefit, using a magnetic tray comes in super handy for holding all the removed bolts. This way, you know exactly where they are and you don't inadvertently lose one. I attach the tray in a location near the part I'm working on.

"Tighten from center out" you say this twice, as you Tighten the valve cover from the perimeter(out) to the center....good job. Weatherstripe adhesive instead of RTV, also you put it everywhere you don't need it, and forget to put the dabs where they need to go, where the 3 pieces come together (front cover, head, and valve cover.) And no, the burnt oil residue in the engine does not mean clean and well maintained, being 2 quarts low, we both know that those engines have oil consumption issues.

If the engineer intended for it to be glued in then it would have come that way originally. 3m gasket adhesive gets brittle and then causes leaks. A quality gasket is all that’s needed unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise!

I also agree and not taking back and letting them know that something is wrong won't allow the worker know they made a mistake also they probably don't glue it cause it probably takes to long for it to dry especially if they have to meet a quota and also it's not really necessary to glue it and can probably be done right but it's a better option if you want to avoid problems

Scotty last year I replaced the valve cover gasket on my friends Toyota Corolla using a factory Toyota Gasket. After cleaning the valve cover of gunk and debris i then pressed the new OEM gasket into the channel. The gasket fit very snug into the channel so i could not find any reason to use an adhesive, just some liquid gasket maker at the metal "seams" on either side of the timing chain as is recommended. Maybe it's just those cheap gaskets that need adhesive to stay put - I don't know. In any event i love your presentations - I have learned a great deal from you. Thanks!

Not a fan of adhesives used on valve cover gaskets tht dont need it. Usually i use a light amount of oil to lubricate the gasket, so it does not roll upon installation, which is what happened on this initial installation.

You could've used some Vaseline or bearing grease to hold the gasket in place...you wouldn't have had to wait for it to dry and more importantly, you wouldn't risk the possibility of dried globules of silicon clogging up the oil strainer!

"Its in immaculate shape, theres no sludge, no gunk" literally tinted with burnt oil residue and valve cover alone has enough gunk to coat the entire surface. Did not even scrape off the OBVIOUS sludge form the valve cover... that can break loose and clog oil pickup tube/or and oil pump.

Ahmad Shumayal my guess for why the adopted plastic valve covers is most likely because of cost cutting. Toyota says that on their new Dynamic Force engines that the polymer they use is this new resin? I’ll come back in seven years to tell you if the valve cover starts cracking on my 2019 RAV4 Hybrid. 😂
