Cheap cars no but on "luxury" cars yes like my 04 Mercedes if it overheats the dash turns red and beeps like crazy it even does it if I don't close the hood all the way and if it really overheats it displays a message to pull over immediately because it turns itself off to avoid engine failure....but on my mom's 07 Suzuki forenza the engine could be on fire and the car won't even beep...

tbh he's not necessarily wrong. I used to do nothing on my vehicles myself, not even oil changes, never shown how and change shops are cheap enough. Well, it all started with the oil change shop I completely trust (distant family owns it, they aren't going to burn me) didn't even want to do an oil change on my newer Rav4 because the dealership (only folks who had worked on it) had cranked down and stripped the threading on the oil canister cover, there recommendation was to go back to the dealership and have them do the oil change where they'd be forced to replace it. I decided to instead order a metal one and install it (Toyota makes a metal one, yet stock installs a plastic one), and that was the start of me doing all my own work. Since then, I've seen all sorts of mechanic issues on my 3 vehicles. And that's not even counting the times they've ripped me off financially; most mechanics seem to just either straight suck, don't care, or are under such pressure to rush they do a piss-poor job. So yeah, I'm more distrustful of mechanics than ever now, and if you do your due-diligence and can be a little technical and get your hands dirty, getting how-to and advice from youtube is probably the better way to go. Seriously. Just realize where your own limits are, you probably shouldn't jump straight into rebuilding an engine if you've never even changed a drive belt, for example.

I had a huge runaround from many garages chasing leaks in my cooling system. Finally I purchased one of these and it went yellow. Because the gasket was only starting to blow I got away with a basic charge from the machine shop. These do not work when it's so bad that you have a misfire then an exhaust tester is better.

Hi Scotty, Back in the day,(1989), we also used a Sun 1125 analyzer to sniff the steam vapor at the radiator neck on cars we were not sure of having a head gasket leak or crack.(we NEVER stuck the probe near the fluid). It worked quite well and we then tried to sell the owner on further testing if needed, using the analyzer test as a free preliminary test. Customers remember being treated fairly. Your videos are the greatest, thanks.

Head Gasket jobs are crazy on these new cars. I was watching a tutorial on doing a head gasket job on the engine in my car the Hyundai Nu inline 4 Cyl 2.0L GDI. Man you gotta take out like 50 or 60 bolts, undo all kinds of wiring harnesses. Not like working on an old engine where you can pull of the valve cover, the valve head and switch out gaskets and put everything back together in an hour.

Hi Scotty and friends! I had a beautiful 2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited that had a blown head gasket, and I did not realize it. I did know that the coolant was backing up and out of the radiator, and into the overflow and onto the ground. I didn't think much of it because the car had upwards of 186k miles and it had other problems like it kept losing charge because of a constant on short. I finally got that fixed. But, the last straw with the Sequoia happened when I put a new radiator cap on the SUV, thinking that it would solve my problem...It did. My engine overheated, warped the head, and I had to junk my baby. (May I please have the head gasket tester? Thanks a lot, Scotty, and keep up the great work!)

Sometimes it’s so subtle though. I once misdiagnosed it because the fluid remained blue, but it’s different hue of blue from original color, and told customer the head gaskets was not blown when in fact it was. You can see the yellow color in the dye bubble as you squeeze so you still have to know how to use it properly

I got a few more tips. Radiator/cooling system pressure test. Usually you're looking for coolant leaks with this test. But, if pressure doesn't hold and you can't see or hear any coolant leaks, you can assume you're losing it through a blown gasket. (or possibly the heater core, but there will be other signs for that Also, my father would usually sniff out head gasket leaks! He'd remove the coolant reservoir cap and carefully breathe in by putting his nose to the reservoir. Of course, he only did this when the motor's been sitting awhile, when the coolant is nice and cool. He said he could sniff out gas or anything else that wasn't coolant in that bottle. I suppose this could work esp with the German-designed pressurized reservoirs. Other cars utilize that system as well, but I recall them prevalent in the VW/Audi, Saab and Volvo vehicles. One more tip, I definitely use this when purchasing used vehicles, is checking the underside of the oil-fill cap on valve covers. If there's any kind of buildup or mildew there, that's usually a sign of coolant mixing in with the oil. Most ppl selling used vehicles try to trick buyers by getting a fresh oil change (I hate when they do that, because you can learn about the condition of the vehicle by inspecting its used oil. I begin to suspect the seller if I find out they changed their oil), but often they overlook this important detail. Whenever possible, I try not to let the seller know this small detail I've just found because they'll just wipe the cap clean afterwards. Scotty, why are you suggesting that ppl use sealers??? Are you nuts!? I find that most of those gimmicks produce more harm than anything else! I would never recommend coolant stop-leaks or "head gasket sealers" ever! That stuff just ends up clogging the coolant passageways and the engine overall. You know that anyone who seriously considers these products isn't gonna take the time to drain all the coolant nor are they gonna remove the thermostat. They're seeking out the 'quick-fix' bandaid, the cheapest and easiest solution attainable. Don't popularize the trend. Please, can you publicly retract the statement? Otherwise I'm gonna keep finding this crud in my future endeavors ...

Scotty mentions the product Steel Seal at 3:22 and warns that it does not work well with anti-freeze, so you have to get all of the anti-freeze out, before using Steel Seal, but it does work at stopping head gasket leaks, saving thousands of dollars in repairs. There is another product that works and in its original formula required the anti freeze to be removed, called AutoRX. Now AutoRX has reformulated their product, so that it works with anti freeze. AutoRX did stop my head gasket leaks, for 5 or 6 years, before I had to re-apply and I got another 5 years of leak free miles. Thank you Scotty, for mentioning a proven product.

I changed my own HG on my 02 civic at 149k cause it blew. It was my first time ever doing a HG replacement and it took me about 12 hours of labor time to pull off the head and put it back on. I sent the head to a machine shop to check for warpage. Not bad for a first try. Paid $50 for a new Honda OEM gasket and about $30 for the timing belt. I gave it to my nephew. He drove it with no issues til it hit 170k miles before getting rear ended and totaling out the vehicle.

I never even needed a tester with our last car, there wasn't coolant in the oil yet but white smoke from exhaust and coolant shot out as soon as you started it, I started it and added coolant with it running and it was still bubbling and coming out worse with the higher you revved it, even with the radiator cap on, signs of being low on coolant are no heat, if you have no heat check your coolant before you drive!!! Otherwise you could end up with a blown head gasket due to overheating! Since it was going to the junkyard I revved up the engine and it started idling bad and never started again after I shut it down, but did make some metal on metal clanking noises when turned over. So I took the battery, the new radiator we'd just had put in and the stereo, and misc other things and off came junkyard to pick it up and give us $75. Glad I took some parts,we can at least make something back from that whole disaster

White smoke coming out exhaust is a clue for a head gasket or coolant in your oil. Pull dip stick and smell for propylene glycol in oil, you can feel it too.

Plus, attacking other KZbinrs in his field was a costly mistake, one that he might have to live with awhile. I watch his videos mostly for entertainment, probably because he reminds me of my Grampa. Sure, I can learn SOME things here n there, but I gotta sift through most of his content to find those precious little jewels of legitimate information to find anything. Yes Scotty I flush my coolant every two years.Pressure check coolant system for any small leaks, replace thermostat , radiator cap and change any hose that’s soft or swollen, and fill coolant to specifications and bleed air out. That block leak tester would com in handy to further check for blown head gasket, intake gasket, cracked block.

We have a product called K-Seal in the UK (I suspect named after Rover's K-Series engine which was notorious for HGF) and I used it before on an engine that had emulsified oil from coolant/oil mixing and it sealed it for a year until we got rid of the car. The best solution though it good maintenance to prevent it from happening in the first place, but if it does go and the repair is worth more than the value of the car, you're best just putting a bottle of sealant in and hoping for the best.

Haha how funny, not only is that the exact block kit I got to test and make sure, that's also the exact "fix" product I used as well with good results. If only this came out months ago it would have saved me a few hours of research! But, thank you Scotty for all the videos, I've gone from never even doing an oil change to doing all my own maintenance and repairs with nothing but improvements over going to shops! And I'm at >3k miles on the bar's fix and so far holding fine. I can tell there's still an ever-slight vacuum leak still as my idle will dip really low, but it's running fine and no longer overheats, and at over 220k miles on the vehicle already so eh, it works and I'm happy with it.

One thing I will say about using any type of sealant in the cooling system. expect to replace your thermostat. It will cause it to fail and you'll have to replace it. Now thermostats generally are not very expensive and are relatively easy to fix, but be aware because it can cause your car to give false temperature readings (In my case, years ago, it was reading normal temperatures but come to find out, the engine was nearing overheating). So if you're going to do any sealant that goes in the cooling system, but a spare thermostat and replace it after you've run the sealant through for a while. The one thing that also bothers me about newer vehicles (and some newer, base-model trucks) is they don't include a temp gauge or oil pressure gauge on the dash. Now this is obviously to save money, but I think all cars need to have at least a a temperature gauge. Most older cars (say before 2000) had this and it's helpful because you can identify a potentially overheating engine before it's too late in many cases. Today's cars will just warn you when the engine is getting too hot through a code (check engine light) or a message on the information cluster, but nothing like having a temp gauge to monitor.
