About hay and pet store : my usual shop (a small local store) is very good with hay (they sell these large bags and there's a sign right in the middle of the food that says "90% of a guinea pig diet should be hay") so I was very shocked when I went to another pet shop and the hay wasn't even with the rest of the guinea pig stuff, and also was in TINY bags! No big bags! No wonder people think it's not a stapple of their diet.

Hi Scotty, I have just adopted three baby piggies and with my two three year olds I now have five females. Had piggies all my life and at 78 I love them just as much now as when I was a teenager. Have learnt so much from your channel Scotty, so thank you so much. You are an amazing guy with a big heart, what a pity there aren't more caring people in this world. Here in the U. K., animals are abandoned too. So sad. When we have a pet, be it a tiny hamster or a large dog (and all the different creatures In between) we make a commitment to do the very best we can for our pet. I wish that all of humanity realised this. Keep saving and nurturing all that you can. 💕

Very useful and informative video, Scotty. I'm 64 and I'm still learning something new 👍😂. Yes, my piggies absolutely love good hay first and foremost so there's not much danger of them favouring pellets over it. The herbal blends are brilliant. Their delighted little faces when they find some in their hay is well worth buying these special mixes. Thank you Scotty 🐹🐹🐹🐹

Love this video! Hay, hay and more hay! When I have been in groups or even on some channels, I hear often, about how messy certain hay racks and what will make guinea pigs not make a mess with their hay. My girls, skinny guinea pigs, love piles of hay in hay racks or loose and yes, they go in, lay,hide and do their business in their hay! It's natural for them. I have two bowls of pellets I fill. They get flipped or poop is in one or both on days and so I make sure they are filled. Hay---always filling! Morning greens and late afternoon or early evening veggies and I do a scavenger hunt style for meals--they love it! I use two water bottles and sometimes they both favor one over the other and then times they drink both together at same time. I love to use forage in pellets and in hay too. I wish they would regulate and see the importance of proper labels for specific food to guinea pigs as some that say guinea pigs can have ingredients that are harmful. Our pets are as important as any other pets!

They're bound to waste some pellets like they do with hay. I used to make sure that mine always had plenty of food. When they have those stick treats, it hinders the amount of hay, etc, that they should be eating!

What about no pellets diet, some bloggers from Europe do t feed pellets to their piggies?
@ScottysAnimalsАй бұрын
I personally would advise against it. Pellets provide a great source of vitamins and minerals. The are nutritionally dense. The only other way would be tons of veggies, and that might put off hay eating which is the staple diet and the best way to keep digestion going and teeth worn down
@addictedtoguitars4948Ай бұрын
My vet has said that pellets lose their Vit C content over time and that by the time I give then out, they have little-no nutritional value. Do you agree?
@ScottysAnimalsАй бұрын
The only way to know would be third-party testing. My small pet select pellets come in opaque cardboard boxes. Luckily vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and you can give extra vitamin C without harm. That's why I recommend Child Life liquid vitamin C and also vitamin C rich vegetables like green peppers
@salami155Ай бұрын
I’ve noticed on youtube that owners lose their pigs a lot to bloat. Is this an avoidable thing if you’re not overfeeding on veggies? I can’t imagine a pig bloating on hay.
@asmrcrafts9279Ай бұрын
I feed them only hay, hay all day, and i feed them like one table spoon of pellets per piggy per day.. I'm very stingy with it, and it's almost like a treat for them... but im watching this video to ensure I'm doing it right. I'm scared of hardened calcium issues... I'm just being really cautious. Oh and three romaine heads throughout the week
@ScottysAnimalsАй бұрын
I like to give my pigs a handful of veggies everyday. I actually give them a small piece of carrot in the morning to make sure everybody has a good appetite and is feeling good. A piggy that is sick will not come out for their treat. My Piggies get lettuce a few times a week but they also get other veggies. I would not be so stingy with the pellets. As long as they are good high quality Timothy Hay based pellets. Lots of water and room to run around should alleviate your fears as regards to stones. I think stones are more genetic than anything else
