The USA was designed to have a system of checks and balances to prevent any one branch from having too much power. The problem is our winner take all form of voting is heavily biased towards creating a 2 party system. That 2 party system is the root of much of the corruption we're seeing. Many of the tactics used to overthrow the will of the majority would not work if we had more than 2 parties with a serious chance of winning at the national level. In theory, even a heavily partisan court cannot really rule; they can just clear obstructions to allow the ruling party to do what they want. Taking down our democracy is a team effort that requires cooperation from at least 2 of the 3 branches.

That slow peeling away of societal support has become an avalanche. That civil war the right wing Nazi types have been promising us is now inevitable. You only think you have rights, you actually have privileges and the fact that you believe you have rights only means they have not gotten around to revoking your privileges yet, be patient, they will. Seriously, I do not really think there will be a civil war, maybe a few skirmishes here and there, but, what is way more likely is a Soviet style breakup of the USA.

It makes sense in the context of the times. You have to understand, at that point, almost all the leaders in the country had just recently been working together to gain freedom at great personal risk. The level of trust that people would put their country ahead of them was never higher. And to be fair, while there have been some wrongheaded, and some despicable rulings, by and large the court has remained a non political body. The politicizing of the courts is a relatively new thing in America. Not non existent the whole time, but nothing I know of to this level.

16 justices, one replaced every year (the one longest on the court) plus a reserve docket for emergencies (justice retiring or dying in office). If the senate refuses to hold hearings or to vote on a nominee within 3 months, this will be considered as consent. A nominee refusing to give clear answers to (relevant) questions is automatically disqualified. The code of judicial conduct has to apply to SCOTUS justices too but with far stiffer penalties. That's for starters, more details will be necessary.

The Supreme Court isn't really "running things". What they're doing is clearing obstructions to allow Republicans to do what they want. In other words, when Republicans want to do something, they can count on the court to most likely give them the rubber stamp of approval, allowing them to plow forward over the objections of the Democrats and anyone else who disagrees with them. For instance, overturning Roe vs Wade didn't instantly make abortion unlawful on the Federal level. It instead empowered Republican run states to push for restrictive abortion bans...and when Republicans get a Federal majority, they may decide to make it illegal for the whole country. As I understand it, the lifetime position was supposed to reduce undue partisan influence. It becomes a problem when the people appointed are already strongly partisan though, since it allows the party that were voted out of office to still have more power than they should. Don't like what the Federal government is doing? Just stack the courts and bypass the laws you don't like by having the Supreme court overturn them.

Yes, they may fill the jails with innocent women, but if it is large numbers, it is going to keep them very busy & there will be multiple test cases. The problem is that it's intentionally problematic. The founders fashioned a government comprised of 3 co-equal branches and in the event that 1 of those branches overstepped it's authority they meant for that branch to be thwarted and reined in by the actions of the 2 remaining branches of the government. And that takes time. The founders knew that it would take time. It was yet another intended safety measure. Normally that's a good thing. And it is still a good thing in this instance....except for some very regrettable points; sickeningly and horrifically many girls and women may ( and assuredly will) suffer some very dire consequences as a result of time that passes as that process plays out, and horribly and dangerously the political machinations and the midterms as well as the next presidential election will ominously and undoubtedly see the fascist GQP stage another coup d'etat regardless who their next presidential candidate may be. The rulings impacting gun rights, Miranda Rights, etc each hold further dangers for individuals and society as a whole. I wish I knew of a "silver bullet" so to speak. However, it's going to require many "silver bullets" along the way. It'll be imperative that President Biden, the Congress, the Senate, the January 6th Committee, the DOJ, etc act as swiftly as is possible and as intelligently and shrewdly as may be.

@@TheMisterGuy A strict rotation scheme with a sufficient court size could take care of that. No vagaries of open seats. 1 replacement per year (in strict chronological order) and at least 16 justices, so a single term president cannot by himself make that much of a difference. And for cases of unexpected open seats there have to be pre-determind temporary stand-ins that will serve only until right after the next presidential election. So, no strategic retiring to give 'your guy' the choice of replacing you. There are a lot more details I could add to get around the other common problems but this should be enough for the moment. OK, just one: After having sat on SCOTUS justices will receive a fixed income and may never ever serve in a public position again. They will not be allowed to receive anything beyond that either from public or private sources either directly or indirectly (e.g. through spouses). @@MarioMaccaferriRules Thank you for sharing a few of your anti-prayer beliefs with us. The manner in which you shared them is quite familiar, typical of anti-God, anti-spiritual atheists competing for religious supremacy. In return, I share well observed, well documented, well known and well proven facts regarding atheists and atheism with you. Atheism is a religion of absolute physical materialism, as you clearly demonstrated. Atheism created their own versions of God in the atheist's own physical material dependent and imprisoned image, in accordance to atheism's own absolute physical materialist doctrine. Atheist doctrine is pro-physical material, and anti-spiritual. Atheism praises science as though a god, and tends to blame God, who they also say doesn't exist, for all the violence, wars, and general badness in the world. Think about that..., they blame someone who, according to them, doesn't exist. Also, in their rather unstable assessment, they totally ignore the free will of each human, and it's extreme relevance to what happens in the world, how the world is, what the world becomes, and what becomes of the world. Doing such is blatantly illogical, unreasonable, unintelligent, uneducated, intellectually dishonest, and demonstrates an assortment of emotionally induced imbalances. While they claim the big bang and evolution are responsible for it all, they don't blame the big bang or evolution for anything, which doesn't harmonize with their ignoring of free will and it's relevance, and/or their obsession with blaming someone, which is clear in their blaming of someone who they themselves say doesn't exist. As they praise science as though a god and blame one who they say doesn't exist for violence, wars, etc., they either ignore, or are completely unaware of the well known and documented fact that science is, has been, and will continue being the go-to creator of nearly all war weaponry, including ALL Weapons of Mass Destruction. Also, science is, has been, and will continue being the go-to creator of nearly all that is choking the life out of this earth with such as plastics, toxic and poisonous chemicals, bio-weaponry, etc. Remember well that free will plays no part in any of it according to atheist claims, accusations, and practice. The anti-God, anti-spiritual religion of atheism claims religion to be a death cult, yet, it is atheism that preaches death and nothing but death upon death of the physical material body, while religion preaches life beyond death of the physical material body. Simply put, atheism preaches eternal death while pro-God religion preaches eternal life..., very clearly revealing that atheism is a death cult, while pro-God religions are life cults. There is much more that can be revealed about atheism and atheists alike, but I've provided enough information that has been, is, and can be well observed, well documented, and proven factual that atheism and atheists are not only as aforementioned, but little more than a death cult of self-elevating deception. Your attraction to human fecal matter is not surprising. Not hate, but cold, hard fact.

Keep in mind that any trick we use to reign in the current court could also be abused to undermine less corrupt courts later. Perhaps a safer compromise, although I doubt Democrats would be able to push the law through, would be to mandate an equal number of partisan judges (representing both major parties). That way, any ruling would have to get one of the partisan judges to defect to the other side. The lifetime appointments would make the judges less answerable to party, since they don't have to worry about re-elections, and thereby have no fear of being primaried, so the odds of defection are higher than what we currently see in the legislative branch.
