The recent US Supreme Court rulings uphold American oppression of marginalized groups. But we don't have to stay in a country that doesn't want us to succeed.

Student loan debt is horrendous in this country. The rate at which the interest is accrued should be criminal. If you are not able to pay the original amount the interest rate is jacked up to an astronomical level. It makes no sense! It's like all the financial systems in the US, if you get behind, we charge you more interest. It's ridiculous, if I can't pay back $100, I surely can't pay back the extra $500 you've tacked onto the bill. The saying the 'rich just keep getting richer' is nothing but a truth. It's designed that way.

Historically, when white America is faced with economic problems they start blaming people of other races/ethnicities. Some becoming even violent. Just watch as white Americans start losing their jobs, homes and investments. Many will be too ignorant to look at their government figures. America is the land of immigants...some voluntarily and some by force. Many people's ancestors came to America after experiencing hell in their own country, but believe the descendants of slaves should now go back to Africa.

It isn’t a loss of rights. It was a loss of a privilege. AA never addressed the real problems faced by many blacks living in poverty in largely black neighborhoods. AA largely benefited white women and rich foreign black students, not the majority of black students in America. The truth is the real improvement needs to be in the schools at the K-12 level in these neighborhoods. Black kids in these neighborhoods can become much more competitive if these schools are improved. This would eliminate the sense of need for AA. Blacks aren’t inferior. They can succeed purely on their merits alone. Are we supposed to believe some rich black kid that goes to a predominantly white school in the suburbs or in another country needs a hand up? Why? Doesn’t it make more sense that some poor white kid going to a predominantly black school in the hood would need more help? The real problem isn’t racial. It is about money and the privilege that comes with money. All affirmative action did was help a handful at the cost of the many. A real fix is needed, not AA Legacy admissions is the larger problem and that was not addressed one bit. The people in power and the media want blacks to continue believing it is a racial issue when it is much more a political problem and a problem of wealth or lack there of. Why aren’t the politicians fixing these failing schools while being in power for decades? They are purposefully trying to keep the black community down in these areas and dependent on the government so they can keep their votes. Can anyone say with all honesty that it is fair that an Asian American student needs to score 273 points higher on the SAT to be viewed equally with a black student? Harvard was more willing to take a seat away from an Asian American student to give the seat to some foreign rich black foreign student than from a rich kid with legacy.
@blackheartcardigan
@blackheartcardigan Жыл бұрын
@@Healing.TortruerYou're spot on! Affirmative action helped foreigners more than it helped ADOS. I'm on the healthcare side, and most of the black doctors are African nationals or of Caribbean descent. Even in politics, Obama nor Harris are ADOS. People of my ethnicity count that as a victory for us, but it's only superficial. After you scratch the surface, you'll see we haven't moved very far in society.

Enrolling in a 300 level course. That same required French book in Canada, was also required for my US French course. Having the book already, I just decided to go the bookstore to see the price. It was $30 USD. I was so glad that I didn't have to pay that price. I just wish I would've completed my entire University studies in Canada. The debt I'm in now😢. One of my Canadian friends told me he was finishing up his Master's degree. In hopes to find a job to pay off his Student loans. I asked him how much did he have? He said $890. I froze for a bit. Thank you for speaking on these topics. This will have a devastating impact on the representation of black and brown students at our nation's top universities. Since the State of California passed Prop. 209 back in 1996 (also called, ironically enough, the "California Civil Rights Initiative") which banned the consideration of race in admissions to its public universities and colleges, the representation of black students at the state's top universities plummeted. Right now, only 2% of the student body at UCLA identifies as African American. Back in 1994, two years before Prop 209 passed, that number was 7%. The story is the same across the UC system. I posted about this in one of the Facebook groups. It really does tell the world that the US is not interested in equity or anything else that provides nonwhites an opportunity to "level the playing field". I am so fed up with being told time and time again that my contributions are not valued and that I am uniquely on my own when it comes to "getting ahead" in this country. Preferential treatment will be protected for some, but NOT for us colored folk. This is something that someone sent to my mother in an email listserv that I think hits the nail on the head: "I spent 6 years in the early part of the 1990s as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale. What always frustrates me intensely in all the debates over “affirmative action” is the lack of full understanding of how the admissions process actually works in the US - which is complex and nuanced, differs between institutions and is particularly different between state schools like UNC-CH and private schools like Harvard - as well as the single focus on race as an admissions factor. There are so many more types of candidates who receive preferential treatment in the admissions process, and most of these attributes are given far more preference than ethnicity/race. The candidates who by far are given the most preference are recruited athletes - and contrary to popular opinion, recruited athletes are majority white. For example, recruited athletes at Harvard have an admit rate of something like 83-90% and make up a whopping 10% of the entering class. I know for a fact that many of these students do not meet academic standards, but are admitted solely because a coach wants them and coaches get guaranteed spots. Then, we have the “development cases” - children of donors or potential donors. There are alot of these. After that we have the “legacies”, i.e. children of alumni and they’re ranked according to how strong their family links are to the institution (i.e. both parents alums is better than only one, BA alums better than graduate degree alums, etc). There are lots of these too. Then there’s geography - at elite privates, so few apply from places like Iowa and Utah that they’re seen as highly desirable for diversity, and so their admit rate is way above average. And all of these groups get alot more “forgiveness” in the admissions process than those targeted in these anti-affirmative action lawsuits. I could go on and on but I won’t. But it’s clearly a racist act to get so wound up and move to end affirmative action *only* for one cohort (race/ethnicity) of candidate and not for all the others. I can tell you what will happen if the most competitive institutions like Harvard are unable to consider any factor apart from academics in admission: the entering class will be mostly from certain east coast and mid-Atlantic states, from elite private schools or from wealthy districts with the best public high schools, and the majority will be AsianAmerican students from states like New Jersey and New York (in my day, we could have filled the entire entering class with just those students, based on academic numbers alone). The vast majority of those academically poor-performing athletes, rich kids, and legacies wouldn’t stand a chance if the so-called “playing field” wasn’t drastically fixed for them. Which I guess is why those groups will continue to be favored in the process." Sorry for the long comment, but it's been a tough week in the US for anyone who is non-white, part of the LGBTQ community, or is suffocating under the pressure of student loans. My son will be applying to colleges this fall and I have been stressing to him that he needs to be open to living and studying ANYWHERE in the world and not to assume the US is the best place for him, as I was led to believe for so long.

2 points here. There is a difference between public accomodation & what you perceive are as automatic give me my whim. Public accomodation is lodging, food, shelter. A college is not obligated to admit you because of X. There is a growth curve for many students across the fruited plain--lots apply to the likes of the Ivies & are rejected. They take the rejection personally & what they don't know there are 30,000 students in the same boat. These schools take a low amount of students. As time goes on they mature & learn that being rejected by some Ivy does not make you a lesser person. Ivies have their algorithm & no one can figure it out. In time many will conclude that where they finally end up going was a better experience than being in snob city. And in many cases your regular college student turns out to be a more productive worker. Just look at all the IVy alums screwing up Washington DC. They can't think out of the box because they have not dealt with the real world. People should study more what the Constitution really says: the 14th amendment is to be a level playing field & supercedes A/A. Now someone asked me why the Court did not apply the decision to legacy admissions. Answer: because legacy admissions have never been challenged by a suit. The Court does not try to arbitrate the past or future unless a specific suit is brought. And in order to reach the SCOTUS a plaintiff will have had to have lost in a lower court so we will see how that plays out. In addition, having had a tad of admissions training by my alma mater, you may have this stereotype that all admissions officers are a bunch of white klansmen in robes that just rule out people. That is your bias. No officer is like that. Colleges do value diverse stories. Let me also offer this hint: it is not necessary for a student to be a member of every school club, sport, town club, etc. Officers see right thru that the student is just trying to load the vitae & likely does not have time to participate in all those things so it is not necessary to join everything just for the vitae. There is no quota on activities but what they want to see is what you have contributed to that particular xtra curricular or whether you're just a name on the roster.

@Kimlibera663 While this case was not about legacy admission the court can, and often does, imply when their ruling on a narrow issue could apply in a broader context. That did not happen here so as it stands the court sees no issues with legacy admission only systems that may give take into account race to make for the structural inequities that exist in the US system at large. Hopefully this case (www.kcra.com/article/lawsuit-challenges-harvard-legacy-admissions/44417304) does make it to SCOUTS so people like you can see plainly where the court stands.
@kimlibera663
@kimlibera663 Жыл бұрын
@@AdaliaAborisade Their case was narrow given that it involved specifically NCU/Harvard. It is hoped that it would be seen by the admissions committees now rather than later that they have to do away with the legacy automatics unless of course that student is meeting the standards expected at that school. Otherwise they are going to find themselves deep in legal bills. Now nothing can be done by in the case of past legacy students but going forward, if you look at say an incoming class of 1500 & some of those are legacies & lets say the feeder prep schools, then the admissions committee is exhibiting cognitive dissonance. As I said colleges luv money coming in. So they have assumed by granting a slot to a legacy that assures that pipeline but they have underappreciated what other students can contribute. We will see where this brand new suit how it proceeds via the discovery process.

Only 40% of college students are male, so there goes your theory that colleges have a preference for men. As it happens, they seem to favor women. 55% of college students are White which is roughly their share of the total population, meaning they are not over-represented. So, there goes your little theory that colleges prefer white students. Meanwhile 25% of Harvard students are Asian despite the fact that they're only 5% of the total American population. That seems like a strange outcome if Harvard is trying to favor White people. But you can't allow yourself to acknowledge facts like these because you need to blame White people for everything. Black people have to get into these universities based on merit while a larger portion of students DO NOT and they are admitted based on family history. Even at that, the Asian person contended that black people occupied seats that they do not deserve and that is why he was not admitted. Asian Americans made up 28% of the student population at Yale, while black students account for about 6% of the student population. Asian Americans are only 7% of the US population, and it could be argued that they are over-represented at this university. Interesting too how it seems the most prosperous, educated Black women (mostly) , many doing better than previous generations are making the most noise. Please tell me in what other country you could've succeeded to get what you've got, then complain the nation is unjust, and leave with all your benefits, and be so ungrateful? How have you been harmed? I also notice some of the most unhappy, ungrateful Black women are highly educated, speak like a white girl, and are largely single, with a dog? The late Kevin Samuels used to speak in such an abrasive way about Black, highly educated women & singleness, but I really see some strong evidence of what he meant all in YT land. Admit that there is no perfect country & the freedom & capitalism in the US is what afforded these most unhappy people the advantages they now have to pack up & leave. Most of the reasons for the discontent will continue, even in another country bcuz the root of the problem wasn't addressed. Funny, most leaving for countries where there's less Black people..😂😂.

You could start by reading the very humorous, also maddening, book called "You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey." Imagine living with the constant aggressions that these two sisters have faced. It's not hard to see why some folks just nope out of our country. My issue is so many who complain are very well educated, in jobs that have put them at the top of earnings among Blsck people but tend to flee for other countries where there are even less Black people, and socially you are more isolated that US, and some expressing an interest in Euro men? The two things do not compare, simply because there are so many nations and so many people looking for different things. Many Black women, who are noting their ancestresses were only brought here to slave and breed more slaves, are also noting that no matter what they do, goodly numbers of people still refuse to recognize their full human rights and value in this country and instead seem to want to turn the clock back. This actually compares with a long, long trend of Black women leading escapes and leaving for other hands, beginning with the Underground Railroad. The difference is the Internet. We as Black women can say, loud and clear, what we think and about the treatment, and encourage each other to find other routes to freedom to live the lives they want.

No that is not what the court has said. The 14th amendment is about equal protection, not equity or special privileges. When someone of lesser merit takes a spot in a classroom that they are not qualified for, then the college is lowering its standards. We should not be a country of lowering standards but our standards should be realistic. If you get in just for checking a box, you risk carrying the monkey on your back that you are incapable of standing on your feet & that you have nothing upstairs. Given that Asian students are high achievers, why can't you adapt that model? Colleges like workplaces do want diversity. Most people today don't want to see a setting of just a clone of themselves.

The ISSUE is with your use of "lesser merit" HEAR ME- the fact that someone from a poor neighborhood, with HORRIBLE SCHOOLS, and a legacy of poverty, poor housing, low quality food and high crime etc. may have lower scores than some white/Asians or whatever does not make them ""Lesser merit" I believe colleges were considering ALL other factors- that the person might bring- ie. POTENTIAL and the fact that they got GOOD GRADES-- DESPITE THE ENVIRONMENT- means in fact they are of "equal or high merit." HARVARD OR YALE trust me is not "lowering their standards" in that they are not gonna take a kid that is gonna fail out...as best as the can prejudge. THEY CHOOSE KIDS that they think will SUCCEED. It comes down to trying to reserve a few slots where GRADES ALONE and the typical "I volunteered with the homeless, ran track, took AP courses" is weighed against maybe "I was the homeless...and I still got a B+" and I still managed to do this and this.... Frankly the latter is more impressive shows more drive, ambition and tenacity. If we changed it from race you would agree, but I'm not gonna waste my time explaining something that if you ACTUALLY CARED, you would have read, and studied history and the ongoing legacy of discrimination aimed at black people- that still plays out...it's not in the past- the legacy is still here now. 1 Quick example there was a concerted organized effort supported by federal government and some local banks to eliminate black farms (and thus land ownership)...by not giving loans, calling in loans etc....this was WIDESPREAD happening up till 5 years ago (?) I can't keep up. SUMMARY: If you can look someone in the eye or put your hand on a bible (or your holy book) and say yes the opportunities for safety, learning, growth, and wealth passed down- and the NUMEROUS benefits that gives, and treatment: hiring, education, police/courts, etc is the SAME for a average black inner city kid as a white middle class kid then...you are deluded. And I am not begrudging Asians- the history is different. 1. So even with some similar challenges, for a poor Chinese-American kid- yes; b/c of cultural and familial background- some of them do excel...even from a working class background. One benefit Asians will talk about is being seen and treated as the "exceptional minority." 2. In fact as a group Indian immigrants out perform whites- there is an in depth article about why: this is complex- a tight, intact family structure-- often with grandparent/grandmother acting as support, two high income-- educated parents, strong guidance and pressure from family to excel in school etc... In the case of Indians, it's the cream of the crop coming to the states for opportunity... No one is truly saying schools should allow the "unqualified" why would we- they would flunk out...what we are saying is/and what schools were doing was broadening the criteria and looking holistically at some disadvantaged kids, who they thought COULD SUCCEED. Now that's being taken away.

@@YogaBlissDance You miss my point on merit. I'm speaking of not have grades compatible with other students. E.g. Straight As & 4 As plus a B- are still of the same caliber as is a 1590 score & a 1490 score. You don't want to set kids up for failure. A legacy of bad environment does not entitle one to special privileges. The amendment says equal. People must stop playing victim. What I would advocate for is school choice b/c it's clear that city schools are more focused on their unions than students & they are not inspired to climb. The 14th is about a level playing field for all. Meet the standard or you don't have a chance of admission. Elevating one group with special privilege as a tit for tat of the past does not solve anything. It only increases more tensions. When you climb on your own, you get to appreciate all the struggles along the way. When you attain on your own, you can take credit it for & not be beholden to the govt which thinks its beneficent. People are aware of the past histories of blacks. But blacks must also know that other groups encountered their own set of discrimination--Jews, Italians, Irish. The Great Society programs of the 60s have not been helpful to anyone. People need to be more resilient & take pride in their attributes.
