In this video I build a scout robot/mech, primarily using parts from a computer mouse and a bauble.

I feel your realism comes from the fact you think about what the details actually do. You think about what the part would do, and not just cause it looks neat. I dig it.

Thanks! Yeah it drives me nuts if there's a mechanical looking part there which clearly has no use. I think it comes from my involvement in steampunk - just 'gluing a gear on it and calling it steampunk' is frowned upon, so I try and make sure everything has an actual function.

Always excited to see you’ve posted something. You’re probably the first UK youtuber using CA accelerator, but lots of US people seem to use it. There’s not a lot of choice here it seems other than mitre bond and the stuff on eBay I got.

Thanks! Yes it's not as well known over here is it? I got the idea from a tested.com video. It's something of a game changer for me though and I use it for everything! I've only seen it available in a few shops, I generally get it from ebay too.

I just love the way you think out details for your robots...you have many skills, non only that of imagining the projects but also that of building things from scratch. The way you cast pieces is amazing. Makes me want to start a project. I am into modelling but nothing like this. Really cool stuff. My compliments...

To change the look of those NO2 bottles slide some O Rings on some and use miliput/greenstuff 5 minute epoxy or the like to have a smooth transition between the NO2 bottles and the O Rings. Also different thicknesses of styrene can be added in rings, fins, strips, what have you to give all sorts of looks. Same can be done for most cast parts to make them look different from one another, that way it doesn't look as though you keep using the same pieces over and over again. You could even mix and match the different add ons to the same NO2 bottles.

Nice! Pleased to see you've got the bug for scratch building. I liked your idea about the neck joint sliding over the bauble, I thought that this would have been be an ideal use for magnets and add a lot of articulation/movement. But this may cause a problem with regards to your lighting. Looking forward to seeing more.
@thedarkpower
@thedarkpower 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob. Yeah I did think about magnets, or maybe a sort of spring mechanism that could hold it together. I think it would work for a larger sized sphere, but this was quite packed once I got the wiring in there, so I bolted it all together in the end.

If you threw a couple neodymium magnets in the globe and the little globe cup it could probably hold and keep it moveable 😍
@thedarkpower

Good idea! I did consider that but there're some cables going into the back of it which would've restricted the movement unfortuately.

Excellent build. I'd love to build something similar, but when I have a go, I get stuck not knowing which way to proceed. Did you have it all planned out, or do you just do it as you think of an idea?
@thedarkpower
@thedarkpower 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers dude. Well I usually have a basic idea, but it tends to evolve as I build. New bits and pieces I find give me new ideas. For example I did wonder if I might put clothes on this one(!). It didn't end up that way of course ;)

Wow such a masterful creation! Truly inspirational. If only you used discarded items instead of functional and new ones :/ Plenty of E-waste and junk out there ,and Im sure your viewers would send you something broken from their own piles! Just a thought :)
@thedarkpower
@thedarkpower 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That'd be nice in principle but difficult in practice - I don't really fancy giving the world my home address and I'd probably end up with huge piles of junk! Cheap gaming mouses can be had for a few £/$ so much easier to use something you know will work. I have upscaled plenty of stuff in other projects though.

I have so much wanted to scratchbuild with a computer mouse but I never get around to it. They look to me like they'd make a great flying car in the same vein of the police ones in Blade Runner.

@@thedarkpower Awesome - thank you. I had an idea to share with you about 1/1 scale materials to repurpose for scale modeling - two really good things for interesting parts are old instamatic cheap cameras, and also older remote controls. Both are readily available at thrift stores and are usually cheap. Also used guitar strings - they make really cool tech-looking cables - and the flat wound strings can be pulled apart allowing for a hollow metal outer sheath that is perfect for routing wires for LED's.
