ScoutCrafter, Beautiful screwdriver. I realize how frustrated you were, but that has to be one of the best restorations I've seen. Your barn and its latches brought smiles to my face. I was visiting one of the engineering consultants that was doing work for us. I asked what other work they were doing. They went through a list of naval architecture-related projects and one for the local zoo. The zoo had issues with the Gorilla enclosure. The gate locks had to be designed to keep the gorillas in, but they had to be fail-safe should a zookeeper become trapped. They would design gate latches the zookeepers could release from the inside. The problem was gorillas are smart. They would come to the gate and would try to open the latch. They remembered previous failures and would try another. Eventually, the gorillas would open the latch. They remembered each failure, so they couldn't recycle prior designs. Each latch had to be a new design. Bob

I like your PMF finds, I love toys too, we recently bought a toy that we couldn't resist, for our future grandchildren - bonkers but it seemed like a good idea at the time and hopefully will only be a few short years now ! The screwdriver looks great, but thanks for including the un-dubbed narrative it gave me a good laugh, we've all been there and yet will like a moth to a flame return for further frustration in due course !

Hi John, We have had some great weather here. Was in the 80’s this past weekend. The early bloom trees have popped. Lots of pollen starting. I used to live very close to Plantsville when we lived in CT. And Henrico is in Virginia about an hour away from me here in Chesapeake, VA. So you’re hitting all around places I know. My aunt lives near Colchester where Zagray’s is. I’ve also been to elephants trunk a bunch of time. Glad to see your refurb. I have a few wrenches with those types of scales. Great looking refurb. Beautiful tip grind. Yes, I remember that hammer video. Yes, I saw 357 Magda’s video. Very funny audio at the end.

The only thing I can think of to make it easier without using wood would be making silicon molds then filling the molds up with reinforced epoxy to get that exact fit. Or I guess you can make some contraption to just pour the epoxy directly into the handle grooves.

Here's an idea for the next acrylic handled screw driver, John (you know you will). File some shavings off the acrylic scales before fitting them. Mix the filings with ether or any proper solvent acrylic glue, then use that gooey mix to attach the scales, it will fill in the gaps and not be as contrasting as JB Weld.

I always think about that even with my tools I have to restore. I’ll never ever get to finish all of them. 🫣😂👍

I bought the large FuBar by Stanley when it was on sale, and I removed the four plastic scales, planning to replace them with wooden ones. What I didn’t consider was that the thing isn’t bare metal, it has some kind of fancy coating on it, so you can’t really glue the scales in and sand the whole thing to fit - not without damaging the surface. Obviously it’s now sitting in a corner, at the very end of the to-do list. Btw, I don’t think I would recommend this tool: super heavy because of the hammer head, the weight ratio between head and handle is wrong because the whole bar is metal, and the pry bar end gets in the way when you swing it. It’s good for some jobs, but most of the time you’re much better served with a sledge hammer and a long pry bar, separately.

Thinking scales for those screwdrivers, if they all take the same size scale, is CNC router or 3d printer. If they're not uniform then a quality hardening liquid material can be used to pour the handle.

That was a 1650 Ming Dynasty urn worth $2,000,000. The driver is so beautiful, I burst out laughing at the comparison! Make a jewel case for it next! Seriously though, you have to consider the workability of some of those scale materials. I think Delryn, for example, would melt if polished.
