I get asked a lot about how to check the capacitors on motors. I’m an industrial electrician. I’m sure you know but with the way you explain things it might be a great idea to include that at some point. Sure there are a lot of people who would benefit from this information, just based off how much I get asked. 🤦‍♂️😂 Thank you for all you do here.

As a sidenote, I have tried to restore the motors on several vintage tools. Once I pull the housing off and take it apart, the tiny, tiny little minuscule tiny tiny wires that go to the coil fall apart like a Sissy in combat. I don’t think that motor restorations are for me. I have fat fingers and heavy hands.

Your series on electric motors had been very educational. Sometimes I have been too destructive when opening motors so I learned a lot about carefully opening them . Also the nice finish was a bonus. I use files a lot but really don't know much about what I am doing. I think a segment about the proper file to use and how to use them correctly depending on the steel you are working on would be very informative. Also what are the best quality brands to buy.

Sounds like you're about back to your old crafty self! When my Sweetie's brother moved up here we went and helped clear out and move him. Their dad had a Craftsman 8 inch Bench Saw with a stand that sat out in the garage. I snagged that thing in a blink because it'd been in china making junk years ago. I cleaned and oiled (before 50/50) it up and it has the old motor like that and the original Craftsman V-belt on it. Runs like a Swiss watch with a 7 1/4 blade on it. I keep the tension off the belt and the table is pitted badly from the salt air of Sarasota but it's a sweet tool. Thanks, Johnny and a Happy Weekend to YOU and God Bless!

Nice job, that motor looks and runs 100 times better now, a lot of good tips there too. If you use a pulley with a set screw on a slotted shaft you can use a set screw that has a unthreaded tip on it or make one yourself by filing the end down to a size that fits the groove in the shaft.

The Repulsion Start motors are rated at an even higher relative starting torque (usually 3 to 4 times rated HP) but they were more expensive to manufacture and heavier. No rotor fan needed on that Century for example as the heavy and open air castings dissapated the heat naturally. It ran cool enough for its cloth covered wires not to get hot. Its interesting to see the progression of heavy cost cutting between this Craftsman and the last one you did with the heavy cast iron "Bell Ends". Seems like this one is a quiet runner though.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter Жыл бұрын
Terry- You are so right, starting the late 50’s companies really cut back on materials and components in order to cut costs on manufacturing. The tin can motors of today have no style or longevity built in. Those Cast Iron heavy motors of the 20’s were too beautiful to cover up. 😃👍

I don't believe the concrete is an issue, the rust is caused by high humidity. Oftentimes a wooden building is better as moisture inside can evaporate as the building is porous. Concrete is waterproof so any moisture inside will be trapped for much longer. Old cars usually fare much better in a wooden shed. That said, if your concrete building is heating and humidity kept low, no problems.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter Жыл бұрын
Bare concrete will wick moisture up into anything…. The only way you might not notice is if you live in a very dry warm climate like Arizona. Here in the NorthEast anything left on concrete will rust.

$10 huh. The copper is worth more than that in scrap. Ya know, it's always amazed me how hard it is to fix something. The old adage that it's 100x easier to break something than make it. "Developed Horsepower" was a marketing gimmick Sears used in the late '50's onward. It is nothing more than the maximum power a motor can develop during a locked rotor condition, it is NOT continuous useful horsepower. This forced ALL manufacturers going forward to use this bogus designation to differentiate themselves from the competition with absolutely no benefit to the consumer.
