Thanks for your useful and illustrative explanations. I did not know the word grimace derived from the Spanish one "grimazo" but it makes sense. "Grimazo" is composed by the word "grima" (a noun that means feeling of discomfort, particularly when you touch some kind of surface with the tip of your nails or when you hear some kind of high-pitched sound that makes your feel completely uneasy) and the suffix -azo (making "grima" stronger and exaggerated).

- All Jean-Pierre's incredulously derisive, snide insinuation that he could stop the epileptic seizures if he'd give up the attention from the family elicited on the young Jean Cristophe's pallid face was a disgusted *scowl* that nonetheless exuded volumes of disillusionment. - He *grimaced* and writhed in pain upon hearing what he deemed could possibly be the sorriest joke ever to be blurted out in a public setting by his brother who he thought had just outdone himself in the crass department. - The moment she felt someone groping her in the dark and *glowered* at the closest shadow she could make out that seemingly was of a person's, she started questioning the inherent irony of how what is genuine is often futile, too.

In Jamaican creole, a "scowl" is a "screwface," and the verb "to scowl" is replaced by "to wrinch" (from "wrench," meaning "twist").
