I love the era when the SCPs were unnatural - one could say, anomalous, and the goal of the SCPF was to understand the inner workings and history of a disturbingly out of place entity/object with little more than leads and scientific research to help YOU imagine more conclusions and interpretations than the SCPF. The anomalies were so much more enigmatic and memorable because no one had a FULL grasp on how they worked or what they were because they were so inherently unnatural and “wrong” in our world, and that made them all the more spooky, threatening, and memorable, as the questions and mysteries surrounding them sparked a ton of conversation and let you imagine and wonder what their REAL full danger/capabilities were, and what terrifying implications there were due to it’s existence. Sadly, it feels like a lot of this is lost on newer SCPs. They mistake having a longer and more complex story and addendums for having a better SCP, and will write an almost full book/short story answering every single question and mystery that could be it’s own entirely separate thing from SCP if they changed a couple names While I do like a lot of those stories, (and I LOVE a couple) I feel like they miss the point and opportunity that makes SCP such a unique and awesome medium for telling stories that wouldn’t make sense or wouldn’t be as entertaining in any other medium.

I like The Old Man as much as anyone else does, but the writing on this one is really showing its age. Clearly made at a time when SCP was more grounded in reality, 106's pocket dimension really isn't special anymore, the amount of redactions is a little obscene (though nowhere near as bad as 682's) and they heavily overuse the term "appears to" in order to sound more clinical. It's also kinda short, which frankly isn't a bad thing. Huge epochs like The Scarlet King, Ouroboros Cycle and such are great, but these small ones make up the heart of what SCP is.
@MrQuantumInc Жыл бұрын
Most SCPs are not actually malicious, emphasis on most. I like how the containment procedures had to be repeatedly changed. Really many of the SCPs probably involve some sort of change to the official containment procedures as they learned more about them. Any breach probably initiates some sort of review of the containment procedures. Every SCP probably had some preliminary, in the field containment procedures from before the official SCP record was written. On the other hand, somehow it feels appropriate here.

I'm pretty curious about one particular tactic and this scp. Its used when dealing with aggressive narcisists that you can't avoid and its called "gray rocking" where you simply don't react to the person's antics and stay as uninteresting as possible. volunteer as little information as possible. stay quiet and still and ignore the person. I wonder what scp 106 would do if someone in his pocket dimension that he captured for amusement simply stopped reacting to him. He's a sadist that's why he comes when the recall protocol is set off. He gets off on people's fear and pain. What happens if you don't give him that? Will he pass you by?
@Washeek Жыл бұрын
No psychiatrist/psychologist here, but don't the worst sadists have their sadistic outbursts as a sort of drug? It's like one of the few things that spikes their dopamine (or whichever hormone) levels? So if you did not provide it with "entertainment" I'd expect to grow increasingly frustrated and agitated, either finding a way to make the victim react or finding a different victim. Like if you imagine a sadistic urge as a hunger and your non-reactive victim as the only close-by source of food that is in a hard to open, yet clear container, what would your reaction be?

I feel like you could fully contain 106 by making his containment chamber walls out of a low surface area lattice of some kind, possibly even multiple layers of multi-layers lattices, with water suspended inside and between each layer. He need a certain amount of surface area to use his surface to surface transfer ability, and by not only reducing the amount of surface he has, but making each lattice layer have multiple internal layers, with suspended water in between the latticed, would be far too complex and confusing for 106 to move thru. Or maybe a low viscosity anti corrosion liquid of some kind.
@thefallencog Жыл бұрын
Its been revealed in tales that 106 finds the traps Obnoxious, but he knows how to escape them if he really wants. The problem with most of the complex cells is that, at least when the tales regarding them were originally wrote, they completely worked more or less in containing 106, however 106's corrosion effect would essentially make them useless eventually, and he'd break free. And its clear that the 05's are a bit afraid of trying live repairs because then 106 will wake up an intentionally try to break out, doing more damage then he was doing originally in a passive state. I believe it was proposed a few times in lore/joke lore that if a way to make a containment cell that would regenerate faster then 106 would destroy it, would be a good way to contain him indefinitely, but no such material that can do that has been discovered. And even if it was, its more or less been confirmed that it doesn't matter, as 106 has grown to like his game of cat and mouse with the foundation, and he could leave at any time if he wanted, Although he really hates the lights, so he kinda doesn't enjoy the idea of leaving, although he acknowledges he can if he really wants to. They feed him and provide him with shelter. Especially when its time to "play" with his prey.

This one is a classic in every sense of the word. It's not just an early and popular anomaly - it's one that really explores and defines not only the SCP itself, but the character of the foundation. When faced with something that is nigh-impossible to contain, they continuously adapt, they learn from their mistakes, and when it comes down to it, they resort to ruthless tactics to leverage the anomaly's few weaknesses. One of the classics. And one of the most mysterious entities in the foundation. That 3D model is unnerving. Good job on that.
@Colorlightt Жыл бұрын
I miss these sort of classic style SCP, it feels like entries recently have become way to meta and abstract.
@ShermTank7272 Жыл бұрын
I like the new abstract entries as well, but there's something to be said about a straightforward standalone horror entry like the original series. A good balance of the two makes for a good wiki.

One of the early SCPs that made me question foundation ethics

This is one of those SCPs I remember reading the article for, back in the days when I would sit and read each SCP article. I read some of the stories, research documents, interviews - etc etc. - but mostly the SCP files. This one, I remember, and he makes my skin crawl. I think the part that makes this a really nasty experience is that he doesn't do it to eat - he does it for FUN, entertainment... this creature is just... I wish there was a way to get rid of this one for good.

Such a textbook example of a Keter-class anomaly. Don’t envy the team that has to lure this thing back into containment by leaving out a meal like it’s an outdoor cat.

when they added his pocket dimension to the games it took the game to another level. Was so surreal what this scp can do. Apparently he shares a common origin with scp 035

As for the last data expunged bit, I believe its inferred that some subjects will be "released" by 106 but decayed and rusted for lack of a better term. The image of a deceased field agent on the document is a good example of this, save for the nightmare fuel it gives.

I think we owe it to the Containment Breach game for making SCPs like the Old Man to be considered classic.

Dr Gears's 106 is like an evil god that humans fear getting on the bad side of. Pretty dark stuff, to reimagine blood sacrifices of the past with a modern day twist. Good entry, Dr Gears!
@Sam-xq8lo5 ай бұрын
I love how containment procedures comprise more than half the article. You know it's been trial and error for the foundation in just finding an adequate enough method of slowing 106. There is no stopping him, just a matter of adding minor inconvenience to ensure less casualties and damage to the facility when he inevitably breaks containment.

you know an entity truly deserves the Keter designation when the portion of the entry detailing containment procedures takes up half of the video’s runtime and went through two separate reevaluations because the fucker just keeps getting out

I thought I remembered hearing that the Old Man is an ex-SCP researcher who was working on reality anchors when there was an accident, and it left him slowly devolving in the pocket dimension (where time moved really slowly) until he eventually became this end result. I could be tripping though because this shit is all crazy.
@dod_the_angel Жыл бұрын
Yeah. That's the tale 'Until Death' where 106 is presented as being Dr Robert Scranton (inventor of the Reality Anchor) after he escaped 3001. I don't personally subscribe to that theory though

I liked how there was a bit of a paragraph on the right hand side of the screen, scrolling down. Maybe it could be like that, but with each procedure/section to be all there, and just highlighting more than the next/previous sections.

I *really* like the new new slideshow style text box vs the old text crawl! I could never help keep myself from reading too far ahead, hitting the end of the screen, and skipping ahead. I'd feel bad for skipping the cinematic VO, but be too interested in the entey to slow down. I'm not doing that with the new style, so thank you 😂

You can clearly see the immense difference from root scp to modern scp. This is so seriously written and enigmatic that modern scp looks childish and over written to get the origin story power scaling drilled into your head. This is the type of scp I fell for and I'm honestly distraught at what the community is becoming since Dr bright
