I wish there was a more symbolic way of taking down 173’s original visual to introduce a new original image for it: like, an addon to the wiki that states that 173 has somehow “broken out” of its “shell” and now has a “new form”, hence the old image is now defunct and outdated. That way, new SCP fans can read 173’s wiki and immediately familiarize with its new form while old SCP fans won’t feel like the new form seemed “out of nowhere” because the new form is somehow part of its lore.

In an alternative universe, peanut becomes a safe class SCP and is placed in a public museum for observation as it's containment procedure, as a piece of art to be admired, and for that it changes form and moves into different poses to keep the public in awe. Generally speaking as some who likes stories, gaming and does art, I think it actually makes the whole “share you ‘memory’ of peanut/Untitled 2004” very good for story development, as we have real-life stories like this. I used to read a lot of SCP stuff back in like 2014 but with time i slowly drifted away from it, and from time to time i do get the urge and binge a bunch of it, i haven't been super happy with the current direction of the Wiki but most of it i think is due to it's unique structure as a open source universe that anyone can join, so its not something that makes me feel bad. The peanut sculpture was always interesting to me because i remember reading about how the original piece of art being created as some kind of good thing, i don't remember the exact details but i think it was called something like "The Friend" or something similar, but with the popularity and impact 173 had on internet culture, it warped the meaning of the art into something different, and i think that brings a interesting discussion to light about who truly decides the meaning of art, the artist or the observer. So despite me disliking some things about the wiki i think removing the image is a good choice, we should thank the artist for being kind enough to allow us to use it for so long without many headaches, despite my liking of 173, part of me feels really bad about the effect it had on the original piece, and maybe even on the artist's career.

Another Idea I had involving this... A termination attempt that only damaged it. Picture this, some of the outer anomalous concrete broken away to reveal something underneath. Most of it would still be intact. Just parts would be missing. Or layers in some cases. My theory would be a glass like material with a dark olive coloring seemingly under the entire sculpture, with small visual bumps on the surface. Much like a peanut. Now here would be the kicker... Staring at this specific material would stop it from moving even if you just glance at it even if you blink, however you start to hallucinate and go mad after prolonged exposure. Now what about things that aren't organic that stare at that spot you may ask? Oh things like video or artifitial optics would glitch, electronics with camera features would fail. Something else would be revealed after the termination attempt... Numbers, symbols, and letters would be present on the inside of the concrete fragments somehow that when put together would form what appears to be a web address, which upon entering as a url on ANY computer even those not connected to the internet.... It would open a simple web page, that would say something along the lines of "To those who have found this, why couldn't you have left it covered. Much like you, I tried to destroy it.. But I only managed to make it weaker.. What ever you do, please if you haven't already, please don't damage any more of the encasement.. It's much more dangerous than you realize" Maybe the page would also have reference to other SCPs the foundation have on file, including 682.. Maybe with a danger rating of sorts, with 173 being HIGHER than 682 if fully uncovered.

Honestly I didn’t even know that there was an SCP community when I was young until I found scp-173’s wiki page, it seemed interesting to read,watch,listen to the documents on videos and on the scp site, but now it seems our stone friend is no longer on the site (I meant website not containment site lol) but the good news is though that at least people can make videos of them still. Don't say, "It's harming the original artist." The Izumi Kato s is happily allowing people to use his work, and has not requested that the picture for SCP-173 be changed. Don't say, "It harms the original artwork." Again, Izumi Kato is fine with SCP using the artwork. He clearly does not think that it is harming his art, or he would've requested a change. The only reason why this is being done is because SCP wants to make all their articles adhere to the new standards of the site. That's fine. I understand why they would want to do that. But I'm not going to stand here and let people dress up those actions and pretend that it's some noble behavior to protect Izumi Kato. Izumi Kato did not ask for this. Izumi Kato does not need this. Stop pretending that this is all for him.
@cherrydragon31202 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even know why kato would even want to request the image removal? It gotten so popular that people started to look for sources and relatable stuff. Finding both HIS work and the scp foundation. He got some serious spotlights on him because of the foundations massive growth in popularity

As our wonderful KZbin stated, the foundation is wanting to clean up the wiki simply to protect itself, the content, the fans, and people such as the Esteemed Artist from assholes who would rather hack and blackmail everyone for money. That's reasonable and honorable to all. If the artist makes a new piece specifically to replace the old for the wiki that would be awesome and would help protect the IP from those who would do it harm. Perhaps woth some friendly suggestions and maybe some donations by the fan base it xould be possible.
@eisas13062 жыл бұрын
Unless the artist comes out and says "I allow this, or I'm fine with this" the copyright intent does not change. This might seem fine, but If someone brings up a court case, the copyright holder cannot legally just be unrepresentative of their own copyright. Well technically they could just push it to a public domain license or something, but they aren't supposed to act like it's okay "without" saying it. A case of where this has backfired is with the obey andre the giant art. The owner of the art made some of his money back, but he has probably lost out on a ton of money from people stealing the art, it was even in video games without permission. So, even if he is fine with the art, legally the copyright hasn't changed. Perhaps in court, the artist could argue that due to some medical issues, he didn't have the knowledge to adjust his copyright intent and thus by proxy isn't intentionally under representing themselves; but that's so much more difficult than just adjusting your copyright intent yourself, it literally can take 1 minute to do that while a court case can cost thousands.

Removing the 173 image isn't going to solve the problem their trying to solve. The wiki is never going to be able to disassociate untitled 2004 from 173 especially if they don't replace the image. Untitled 2004 will never not be known as SCP-173 removing the image is just an empty gesture that will achieve little in the long run. I'm not saying removing the image isn't the right thing to do what I am saying is it's to late to actually mean anything.

This is more a matter of understanding how reality works. Once art gets out, it is in the zeitgeist, and out of the hands of the creator (both of the SCP article and the art/picture). We do as much as we can to attempt to control it, to keep true to the creators' original intent/desires. But you can only do so much, especially for something that has been in our collective memories for years, approaching decades. It's like facing down a hurricane and railing that it shouldn't destroy this house. Yeah, lets do everything we can. But sometimes the force of nature, or flow of culture and information, is too strong.

While it is true that it does undermine the original meaning of the artwork, I feel that it is a central part of the entire SCP universe. I mean, it is the way I first discovered this amazing universe and it inspired me in creating my own artwork. Letting go will be hard, but I am happy with the memories I have of it, and recreating it might even be the right thing to do, and let new artists pave the way towards a better community. I just thought of a potentially fun way to explain away the change in his appearance. Remember that old story that SCP illustrated did that showed 173 versus 106? In that story that was done, 106 destroyed the block year version of 173, turning the statue down to rubble. It would be later on that a security team would accidentally come upon what we now know as Peanut. That story can be re-adapted into the original 173 being destroyed and the new one being what is discovered.
