So, the “benefit” it gets from us is moreso a pride thing. It’s showing us that it is, in fact a nightmare, but it is the greatest nightmare that there is- It slays other nightmares simply so that we recognize and are grateful to it, a nightmare of nightmares. So it does it simply to be recognized as the best, and could have an ulterior motive… But maybe it’s like trying to induce a memetic thing where if enough people recognize it it can destroy all other nightmares permanently or something.

I am a believer in the psychic fear eating parasite theory, I propose the reason SCP-2840's victims don't feel fear or anxiety in it's presence or having witnessed it's actions is because by that point, it will have already consumed their fear, they don't feel scared or afraid because they have no fear left to feel.

Ok so the real reason it dose this is just to keep itself alive but it doesn’t feed on our nightmares it feeds on something different. It’s the feeling that can only be achieved when we feel safe it’s not making you feel anything it’s always hoping for that feeling to feed off of because without that there’s nothing left, and it hates people who lucid dreams because they have control instead of it so there’s nothing to feed off of and that’s what your sleep paralysis demon is and there’s a lot more where that came from

Funny that this SCP reminds me of all the dreams I had where I fought all the nightmares that seem impossible to fight. The dream I remembered fighting are huge hostile eels that keep destroying lands and hoards of undead at cities and dark cemeteries. Fought them with my barehands. I lied if I said I dont feel fear as I face hostile entities on my dreams, but one thing for sure is it feels satisfying to just punch and kick bad monsters in dream. It would be stretch though if I said Im SCP-2840 lol.

My answer to any existential question is "It just is" and I think its the reason here. Why does it save you from your nightmares? It just does. Its another being that doesn't and does exist at the same time. Why? It just does. Another thing could be that it feeds of nightmares but not for any major reason other than to exist. I mean, its just... something, it doesn't need much of a purpose or goal, it eats harmful parts of nightmares and thats it, that it helps humans feel safe in their sleep is just an added effect. It may not even know that it exists! It just is.
