The Plague Doctor is one of the most mysterious creatures in SCP Foundation containment. Where did he come from? How old is he? Is he a human or something else entirely? Is he powerful enough to kill SCP-682 the Hard to Destroy Reptile? And most importantly, what is "The Pestilence" that he is on a constant quest to cure? And why do his methods seem to always end in death? If he is unable to physically touch another living being without them dying, meaning he can't control it. Maybe his bringing his victims back from the dead is his way of working around his killing touch. He doesn't want to kill others, but he really wants to cure "the pestilence," caring more about that than killing others and he needs to touch others to work on curing it. So when he inevitably kills another being, he works on their body to try to bring them back without the pestilence.

I think SCP - 096's psychic ability to know who has seen his face from continents away is the same way 049 is able to find out who has the pestilence. The reason he cant explain and refuses to explain is because its like instinct and he thinks that all the doctors and scientists have the same instinct like its hard for us to explain what happened in a dream or our imagination except for him its more real. he might have fantasy prone personality where he cant differentiate reality from fiction and if someone says his fiction doesnt exist thats when he gets violent.

I think the pestilence is a more scientific look on fear and the irrational action through it, when SCP-049 kills it’s fairly merciful, a touch and you flatline; no pain or suffering. I think SCP-049 is trying to eradicate fear, which in and of itself is fairly difficult to explain and going through lengths to cure something arguably incurable would spark fear, which is why doctors of the foundation were supposedly infected. If we were to no longer fear death or our time alive as mortals, we would no longer fear anything, and we would all be cured

Here's my theory, the "pestilence" is the fear of death and hes curing it. (In a way) (2:27) When he entered the site he complemented the staff of how little "pestilence" there was. Maybe meaning that most of the workers there knew what dangers lie inside the site and weren't afraid of dying. Also his "cure" allowed his victims to become not dead, but undead, perhaps ending their fear. Just my theory.

My hypothesis is that 049 is specifically targeting the lazy. When a scientist was with 049. He said he was going to take a break. That's when 049 got aggressive and killed him. Since the SCP foundation is very hard working 049 sensed little to no laziness. Hence why hes so cooperative

My theory of the Pestilence is that it's self doubt. It wasn't until Doctor Hamm started to question himself if he could get answers of what the Pestilence is when 049 started to behave aggressive. Plus, because at the time, the SCP that apprehened 049, they knew the importance in what they did and believed in themselves, hense why 049 stated 'there is so little Pestilence here' Also, since the zombies he creates have, (as far as we know) no sense of 'self', 049 would see them as 'Cured' though not perfect because they are no longer human.

One thing I always considered after his remark that the Foundation is very low in The Pestilence is that The Pestilence is "Ignorance", specifically OF The Pestilence. An interesting detail about his history with the foundation is that initially, he treated a researcher assigned to his case cordially, sensing he was free of it. However, as he grew increasingly unable to humor 049's research as it became readily apparent his research was based exclusively on qualities 049 either can't put into words or just assumes should be common practice and refused to explain further, he saw that the researcher had become infected. Because the Foundation tends to be very cautious overall, his observation of there being very little of The Pestilence could be from them assuming that there could be something they're not seeing since they don't have his perspective, no matter how indecipherable his notes are. After all, they have a wide array of anomalous diseases locked away, and at least one book that makes you believe you have a disease so badly that you actively die from it. In short, the more likely you are to believe in him and his methods, the less likely he is to see you as infected. It's not that he's a liar, mind you. It's that his worldview is so vastly incompatible with ours.

That would explain everything in the original comment, since it's based on his detection of the Pestilence, but his cure isn't targeting the symptom, rather the mysterious disease it comes from. That still leaves what the Pestilence actually is, though, but it would be an interesting step closer.

This actually made me come up with a theory of my own: SCP-049 is a former member of the Sarkic Faith. In his studies before he became a doctor, he became obsessed with the evolution of humanity. Transcendence through the flesh and mind so to speak. This obsession grew him to discover the practices of the Sarkic Cult and began to delve into the practices, though eventually became disgusted with what he saw. What he thought he would find with the Sarkists were like minded people who treasured the biological human evolution, but instead he found paragons of disease and corruption. People who were rejected the technological advances of humanity and revered the primality of the bodies which they were born into. As for what the pestilence is… well, it’s human weakness and fragility, it’s the very concept of being susceptible to disease in the first place that is the pestilence. The pestilence is the wall between achieving the next step of human evolution. The mere fact that life can end in a heartbeat is upsetting to 049. With this in mind, 049 loathes the Sarkists, being an actual representation of human weakness and the rejection of progress. They are resistant to change and actively guard the wall stopping humanity from achieving a state of being greater than the current. Being worshippers of disease, they are the angels of the pestilence. That is why 049’s zombies have certain attributes to them that make them physically stronger than average humans. They cannot succumb to old age nor disease, they are a step in 049’s progress to a brighter future towards humanity. But at the same time… as he said himself, they are imperfect… they lack the ability to think, to speak, and to just… live. His creations can even be a reminder to the Sarkic abominations he once studied, monsters of disease and corruption. But… these unthinking and unfeeling zombies are different… they’re free of corruption, they live longer, they’re stronger than humans. Clearly he is on the right path, and he’s not about to give up now… he’ll do anything to achieve his goal now… no matter how many shambling corpses he creates… one day his cute will be a success. And on that day, he’ll be overjoyed to see that the person he cured can live a full life in the next stage of human existence, one without disease or pain… and even maybe, without death.

About 049 vs 096, this brawl already happened. Upon entering his cell, 049 looked at the shy guy, (not eye contact) and went over to him with a syringe. He said "This will only pinch a little", and injected an unknown liquid into 096 This tale was confusing at first, as the story describes a tree with laughing vines was in 096's room, when 049 "vaccinated" 096, the vines stopped laughing one by one. A small child emerged from the tree and went over to 049 and looked up at him and started crying, gripping onto 049's robes and sobbing onto them, the plauge doctor, flustered by the sudden emotion, only said "there there, your cured now, my child". After a while the child stopped crying, and went back to the tree, and so did 096, where he went back to his position, and weeped. Minutes later 049 was escorted out of the cell, there was no battle, and no blood. For context for those who are wondering, the child's appearance looked beated up and bloody, and his back looked as though someone whipped him.

I reckon what makes him one of the most interesting SCP's is the fact that it isn't clear if he's an ally or a threat. He could be legitimately trying to deal with a greater threat, perhaps a disease SCP similar to 008. Or, he could be lying and like 106 could be a being of pure cruelty. This ambiguity allows the audience to project trust or repulsion into him. Trusting people might want to work with him and take the risk to make an alliance with him. Untrusting people will consider him deluded or deceitful. He's my favourite SCP because of this depth.

The "pestilence" being death could be an interesting idea, considering he himself is immune to mortality, everyone with "the pestilence" could have died a few days later of natural causes without "intervention". Him being "disturbed" by 682 could be because him sensing the hate and death he has caused. However, a notable outlier is that only humans contract the pestilence, maybe animals most often dying by humans in his time, may not be seen as dying naturally.

I wish I had caught the community post, but alas, here we are. My theory: pestilence could be fear. His comment on there being a lack of it at the SCP Foundation would make sense considering the fact that at the SPC Foundation, there isn't a lot that they haven't seen yet. This is supported by how he's been found with aggressive, mindless "patients" for what through his experiments, he's caused them to go into a fight or flight state, which is often caused by fear. The one animal he considered cured was mindless, and unable to feel primal emotion. Perhaps his goal is to prevent the scarlet king from entering this plane through eliminating the thing he uses to rule people (fear and torment)

Theory of my own SCP: 049 OC: Euclid Note: Combative are known for their combat ability, essentially harming others. Departments that work for the better side of things, like MD and ScD, are ignored. My theory would be that harming others is the disease, or the desire to do so. The Pestilence could be a mental disorder that can only be cured by the complete removal of sentience, hence why 049-2 are mindless.

I think that perhaps "the pestilence" is linked with the anomaly found in the human psychospace mentioned in SCP 5000. This anomaly being some entity that allows humans to feel pain (i.e. feeling bad when bad things happen, such as physical pain, empathy etc.), which naturally they would not be able to. The Foundation finds this entity in the alternate universe mentioned in the SCP 5000 article, and seeing what it will do to humanity they decided to spare everyone the pain and wipe out humanity as it was seen as a preferable outcome. It finds a way to rid it's employees from this anomaly but for some reason or another cannot distribute this 'cure' to the rest of humanity. Perhaps this is because most humans are resistant to it or perhaps you have to first believe this anomaly exists before you can be rid of it, which most humans won't. Whatever the case, the SCP Foundation, now devoid of empathy, sets out to spare humanity, and that's where the SCP 5000 diary entries begin. This would explain many aspects of both of these articles: -SCP 049 does not sense "the pestilence" among the Foundation staff, as many of the people working there have learnt to throw away their empathy for the betterment of humanity. -The Foundation staff in the SCP 5000 article do not feel pain when stabbed in the shoulder, hence it being an effective measure to check for imposters. -Dr. Bright is unaffected by the 'cure' sent out by the O5 council, either because his consciousness is in the amulet and it only affects the consciousness of the body he's occupying, which is now long gone; or that since loosing his ability to feel pain would render him "less/not alive", the amulet's immortality effect prevents this. -Agent Ross, when threatened with torture by the GOC, just laughs it off as he no longer feels pain. Although there are a few loopholes in this theory, I do think it's a good one to go into both of these articles with, as it gives you quite the difference perspective on them.

Theory: I think that scp 049 was an actual doctor in the medival era and became obsessed with the pestilence, whatever it may be and tried to cure it. As he didnt have any willing subjects back then he did a half baked zombie making process which made him semi-immortal and resistant to pain and as he belived in the hipocratic oath which wasnt as popular before he started to put so much fluids and vaccines into himself that his bones started to bulge up and his half zombie body started to dry out in some areas which made it like leather and most dead skin so he couldnt kill you with touching him there. He came into contact with many other diseases as his body started to mutate to make another being entirely. he may have been also affected by seeing deus ex machina machine and gone half insane wanting to fix the world from flippin itself over again and gotten stuck in a time loop and he tries to recreate the methods of the machine but on a smaller basis thus curing the world of the pestilence by changing the machines power just a bit to fit it to its needs.

I'd like to have my own take on Chaotix's theory. Sounds far fetched but here's my theory. When brought to the foundation, he said it had little of the pestilence there, at the foundation many important people like some of the 05s and LOTS of the SCP can't die or seem to be immune to physical damage, this might mean that when the doctor says there is little pestilence he means there few little organisms that can die, maybe his cured patients, while being able to be shot and killed, can live an unlimited time if they don't take any physical damage. They still may need food and water who knows but maybe they could theoretically, live forever, since the doctor says it isn't a perfect cure, maybe he means a perfect cure is a normal person who cant die of old age. When he assumes all scientist at the facility should know what the pestilence is, maybe he means because of all the seemingly immortal entitles they are around they should know that the pestilence is death.

One of the other groups put SCP-999 in against the doctor. 049 said 999 is completely free of the “pestilence.” I wonder if it’s fear, hatred and anger. That would explain why the doctor is selective on who has it. Plus SCP-999 is made of pure joy and kindness, he wouldn’t have a hateful bone in his body.

My theory is that the “pestilence” is intense negative emotions. From his one confirmed completed experiment, he worked with an ape’s brain and removed the amygdala, which manages the perception of emotions like anger, fear, and sadness. And for a long time, it was believed that humans were one of view entities that had the capacity to feel emotion, hence the “only humans can have the pestilence” ordeal.

The pestilence has something to do with how logically we think and how much emotion affects our thoughts. Those with the pestilence are those who allow emotions to affect their thinking instead of thinking logically. 049 is a being that heavily believes in science, and mentioned that the scp foundation had very little people with the pestilence.

so basically, it's the entity mentioned in the scp 5000 lore. which is why only humans can have the pestilence, and also why his "creations" turn out to be zombie-like creatures, lacking any empathy. if you've read about scp 5000, this might sound familiar.

I would like to see how he'd react to someone with SCP-008. SCP-008 is a very contagious disease that turns you into a zombie.

i think the theory that holds the most weight is that SCP-049 knows about the entity in the human collective unconsciousness.
