Quick note and fill in on the diesel car comparison as I appreciate it was a bit vague. Early turbo diesels = all low to midrange punch, then ran out of puff. Short shift up to ride the torque. This feels the same. More in the middle than there is up top.

Coming off of a 411 Himalayan I agree with much of what you said. The Triumph really is a looker. While I could live with the low hp on the Himalayan I find the 400x much less frantic on the street as it pulls grades with no need to downshift. I do miss the wind protection on the Himalayan once speeds get over 60. I have my fingers crossed hoping the 400x will be more reliable than my Himalayan. Time will tell. I'll be 60 this year and purchased the Triumph as a bridge bike for weekend fun until I retire. When I'm done working I'll probably look for something more long distance friendly. I think the 400x fits in the category of being a bike you don't need but it's a bike you want. I also have a practical BV 350 scooter so passion played a role in the 400x purchase.

It’s impressive how you give a better description to all of these bikes than the traditional Moto journalists. You can actually find downsides and compare meaningful aspects of bikes, which for some reason the other channels can’t… they all complain about spec sheet warriors and then proceed to list off spec sheets every video and say “good bike good.”
@nathanthepostman8 ай бұрын
Thanks cowmath. I suppose before running tours I did work for the bike magazines like Adventure Bike Rider and before that was a car journalist for a short while. So I guess I've done a bit of reviewing over the years but yes, you can predict that if someone's been loaned a bike to test it's going to be a 'great bike'. Until the next great bike.

Honesty and integrity are always two things that spring to mind when I watch your videos mate :) usually always watching with dad but unfortunately he’s in hospital at the moment after a turps op on his prostate yesterday. It’s been super interesting watching this one as it kinda sounds like the right fit for dad going forward as much as I love the T7 it’s not right for dad he was determined to give it a whirl though as that’s what he wanted, now we know where he’s got more issues with his prostate etc it’s going for something lighter / lower seat height. With his stage 3/4 prostate cancer we recently found out about. At the moment kinda swinging between a Scrambler 400x or a Triumph T100 as he doesn’t wanna do any green laning now as some experimental stuff he’s on thins the bones. So the road orientated T100 of a 2017 era for the smoothness of the twin n low seat height (used to have an 865 we both rode) Seat comfort, smoothness, weight of the stand an not fatiguing all are new priorities as well as seat height. Really appreciate the comments about the suspension Nathan first I’ve heard until someone else mentioned it on adv rider. Also just wanna say thanks for that absolutely superb 450 latest video I think it’s a trend with bikes now that they are going in directions we all don’t want there’s a disconnect between the companies and the consumers I ride a lot of older Nortons an see it with the new TVs brand. I think there’s so much to be said for the 411 even though I had issues with mine it was a motorcycle that captured what motorcycles used to be and the real enjoyment and usability they had especially with a long stroke engine hopefully Enfield can be humble enough to realise a lot of us wanted an updated 411 I know when I was at Mcn live they nearly fell over when I said that’s all I wanted a 500 long stroke but it’s good to speak the truth. Keep up the awesome work mate. For me it’s back to the Nortons as I’m selling the 1150 for funds n space so we can downsize the house and fufil dads dream of moving to Devon while we move down to near Honiton in 3 months so might see you on the local roads :)

Interesting what you say about the suspension. I bought an Interceptor last year and very quickly found that it can't handle the roads in Ireland in the same way that you've found with the Triumph - so bouncy that you have to slow down. I was thinking of changing my Interceptor for the Triumph but I did the YSS upgrade front and back instead and now I'm really happy with it. And I don't like what people have been saying about the gearing on the Triumph - 6000 revs at 60mph isn't great. So I'll stick with my Interceptor for now. Also got an XT600 for the rough stuff.

I am looking at this bike or a himalayan 452 as a first bike and plan on commuting on hwy (less than 20 miles each way) for work and for some light off road, gravel and some hills. I really like the retro styling of the 400x and the weight/nimbleness of it compared to the 452 which you say is much more top heavy but easily more capable off road. As someone who has done serious mtn biking for 30 years (and bmx prior) and still ride like I am 20, I think I would be better than average as a new moto rider. My question is the 400x capable of rocky hills, etc if it had better off road tires?

Hey Nathan. I'm trying to decide between the Scram 411 and the Scrambler 400x, and I'd love your input on which might be better for a newbie rider like me. I've got about a year of riding experience on a Classic 350, and after test-riding both bikes, I'm struggling to make a choice. I really enjoyed the extra power of the Scrambler 400x, but for some reason, the Scram 411 felt more nimble. Even though the Scrambler 400x is a taller bike, I was surprisingly comfortable on it (I'm 5'4"), just like I was on the Scram 411. I took both bikes through traffic, a few U-turns, and a short highway run. This will be my first bike, and my priorities are: - Getting in tune with motorcycling culture - Long-distance riding - Off-roading/Trails I have no experience with long-distance rides or off-roading yet, but I'm eager to learn. For off-roading, I plan to join some local off-road academies here in India to systematically build my skills. The obvious cons I can think of for both bikes are : - Tubed tyres on the Scram are harder to fix puncture on but spoke wheels are better for off roading - The Triumph might be more expensive if or when I drop the bike either on road or off road. - RE Scram while it was a lot of low end torque, I might miss the extra juice of the Triumph once I get used to the RE. Thanks!

As usual I find myself nodding in agreement all the way through Nathan :) Far and away the best thing about the bike are the looks, even with my usual critical eye it's really hard to fault it looks wise, irrespective of price, and it was this that made me put a deposit down. When I rode it though I was a bit crest fallen. Like you the suspension, especially the front, seems needlessly firm. It's much less forgiving than the far sportier Z400 for example, and seems at odds with the image. I think this is what i struggled with, it felt either just a little under developed or more accurately rather mismatched in it's character. The looks are obviously designed to appeal to the sunny Sunday rider, no issue with that, but then softer more compliant suspension would sure be the way to go. The engine also felt exactly like what it is, a short stroke unit that had been tuned for mid range so you've lost the fizz at the tops end but never really get that thumping single feel of an old school Enfield at the bottom. Rather than a diesel engine i likened it to an old MZ250, not much at the bottom, naff all at the top but a nice slug of torque in the middle. They don't sound at all similar of course ;) Pretty though it is, it just felt disappointing and i look forward to the delayed Himi mkii with interest! :)

Good review and update you are fair in your musings Nathan----I am over 3000km now on my 400X-give yours a go once you pass break in--i almost wonder if the ECU retards the engine over 6500 RPM until break in is completed? Im looking at more road biased tires right now the Karoo streets are loud and seem heavy i want 90/10 tires next when these wear out so i am road biased I am low rpm's in town but run 6-10k when i wanna rip thats where this bike shines IMO--i thought it was a mid range bike too--just wrapped up a trip of 4- 7 hours a day in the saddle at highway speeds-120-140km/hr--i agree most people wont use it like this at all--i live in a hot country and not having anything in front of me is heaven-my mesh clothing gets airflow i love it. You are correct most folks will not tour on it i will though as its a big step up from my last touring bike a CRF250L that i did 35,000km on.I never changed the suspension on my Honda Rally and it was too soft and yes the 400X is the opposite but not hard to deal with for me because i am enjoying not having the front end wash out when i brake hard on the 400X as compared to the CRF250L which was just floaty suspension overall. In both cases i just rode and lived with it but i will look at the budget suspension upgrade path on the 400X for the forks. Been using the 400x as a scooter in the town i live where 90% of folks use scooters for transport and its fine but too big to park and eventually i will get it beat up in the scooter parking spots so i am buying a stand alone scooter today but i found the 400x pretty nimble overall. I wont be doing much offroad like yourself so i am more road biased. Its still breaking in.... the suspension is getting softer i have to keeping adding to the preload and i would like a progressive fork spring but no complaints other than the immobilizer buggering up...in a cold climate well....dunno about touring on anything without wind protection--too much range of temperature during the day but in a hot climate a scrambler its ideal. Maybe i change my mind during rainy season haha--racks arriving in a few days will carry 70 L with a tank bag/rear duffle and side bag all PVC dry bags--will be doing 30-50,000km a year so i hope this thing is reliable

what do you think between this one and Fantic Caballero 500 Rally, ever had the opportunity to ride one?

Yeah I tested one a few years ago. Liked it. And it's an interesting comparison, because to ride it's a no brainer (at least from memory). The Fantic is a more engaging, better handling machine with an engine that makes good power all the way through. I liked it. But I wouldn't buy it, because for the money I don't think you're getting enough bike (unless you get a good deal on a second hand one). So whilst I don't think the Triumph's not as energetic to ride, it's probably the one I'd buy as a regular buyer, simply because for the money it's a great package of solid dealerships, rideability, resale, value etc. Shame the Fantic isn't that bit more mainstream as it could do well.

Had a demo ride on one of these since your first video on it, only on the road. It definitely feels premium for a 400cc bike made in India but the gearing is too aggressive and the engine is too revvy for my liking. It sort of feels like the bike is tuned for newer riders to feel like it's faster than it actually is, 2nd gear almost feels like 1st gear on my Himalayan, and I found I was riding around in 3rd gear when I'd usually be in 2nd. For my money I'd probably rather have a used Bonneville 900 over these new 400cc bikes, cash price is roughly the same and less of a depreciation hit.

A second hand Intercepter at a bargain price is a better buy in my opinion.l put 100,000 miles on my bikes so l ay concerned about long term Reliability and dependability. All of my bikes have stock suspension because I won't pay $400 for new shocks. My Triumph TR25W with universal tires is great in the dirt and the street. 60 mph down dirt roads and good on sand trails. Reliable and dependable transportation and rebuidlable forever ♾️. My 250's are easier to start than my BSA 441 Victor.

Uhm, for me it is a backhanded compliment to say a bike is on its best when standing in the garage and being looked at it.🤔

Yeah to be honest I had to temper back on my initial impressions of the bike as I was a bit disappointed with it so it might be a remnant of that

I think you might be doing some riders a disservice if you think it's just for Sunday blasts and kept close to home. I tour a CRF250L, an Sh350i and an SH 125 Mode. The Mode is the easiest bike I've ridden up Hardknott and Wrynose - I can't be in the wrong gear. When my Scrambler 400X arrives it will join the others as a bike capable of touring - it's almost as if you've forgotten all your adventures on Dorothy Nathan. My Scrambler won't be going off road - too heavy for that for me. My off road riding is on a CRF230f or Serrow.

I believe the comment is mostly aimed at the manufactures target audience, the vast majority of which own bikes as toys, rather than work horses.
@nathanthepostman8 ай бұрын
Yes what I meant is that I think that's where a majority of riders will use it, as that's what it's best at. If I was going longer distance and was picking a bike from this group then the triumph would be bottom of the pile. That's not to say it can't do it and won't do it. But as an observation of where it sits in relation to the other bikes I ride, that's where I see it. I'll be doing plenty of miles on small bikes this year so with the greatest of respect I haven't forgotten anything about the benefit of small bikes.
@BikingChap8 ай бұрын
I think Nathan is spot on in honesty. You will be able to tour on a 400x, just as some brave souls go off road on an NC750X, but few will use it for that and there are many, many other bikes that are better for that job.

I really wish that they'd bring out a Tiger 400 this year to compete with the NX500. This scrambler isn't good for touring.
@nathanthepostman8 ай бұрын
That's a really good suggestion to be honest because then it would be far more comparable to the other bikes in this small adventure class. Hopefully they're working on something

£5,600 is very expensive to many in the UK. Always disheartening to hear people treat that like pocket money. I understand you mean when compared to other bikes but maybe think about the way you word it.
