Glad to see Elvis coming out with new videos and continuing the casting passion. The testing on steel plates Elvis did with 223 was awesome, too...and ballistics gel!!! This video in the youtube suggestions brought me back to the beginning of a great hobby and passion.

Hi Elvis, I’ve been collecting range scrap, but since there’s only one range close to me, I’ve gotten about all I can until it builds back up. I’ve been thinking about wheel weights, but have heard that now they are using a lot of zinc and that’s not supposed to be good. I know you made a video on using zinc, but for now I want to stay with lead. How do you know the difference between the two and what happens if a small amount of zinc gets mixed in by mistake? Thanks

Elvis - This is one of the finest, if not the finest, wheelweight acquisition videos on YT..!! - I used to buy three of those 5 gallon buckets of lead at a time from the metal scrapyard before wheelweights were banned in CA (tire shops used to give me a couple of handfuls or a little bucket, wasn't worth the effort back then - now they have to turn in quotas so they can't give out any). Your lead supply makes my getting 20 pounds of range scrap at a time look like a drop in the bucket...!! Well done. If I lived near you, I'd help you melt that down just for the fun of doing it...!! My casting pot died so I have replacement on order so I can cast up a lot of bullets to do those 3 new Eastwood colors... Have a great day, FC Steve

Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What is your average lead to steel and zinc in your buckets? Here in Ohio I pay $30 per bucket and tend to get about 10 lbs of pure lead from the stick-ons and about another 50 of hard lead alloy out of a 100lb bucket. The rest is zinc and steel.
@elvisammo8 жыл бұрын
hey dale mead. ..I get about 80 percent. .. 20 percent steel and zinc.. .a full bucket weighs around 150 pounds...
@dalemeade18 жыл бұрын
That is a bit better than here, but then I live fairly close to some big cities and all of the national tire chains use zinc or steel. Our local shop gets those cars in to work on as well, so that increases the steel and zinc in the buckets. I am shooting for a thousand pound reserve then I will slow down and just pick up a bucket as I use it to cast bullets.

I'm paying .30 cents a pound for mixed lead wheel weights at the local scrapyard here. I bet I see 70% - 80% usable lead out of that. When you find stick on pure lead wheel weights in there it kinda makes up for all the bum ones. I save those separate for another batch of just those. It takes awhile to come up with any amount of them before it is worthwhile melting them down. I have a 20 quart, 7 quart and 2 quart Dutch ovens. It depends on what I am doing for which one I use at that given time. If at all possible I try to use the 20 quart the first time. It keeps everything more uniform and all in the same alloy weighing the same that way. I have multiple size ingot molds I store and use my lead in. The big boy is a 11 1/2 pound ingot. I use that one to process, hoard and store large quantities of lead. I have 5 and some change pound molds I use when I want to store/use them. Also have Lyman 1 pound ingot molds for topping off the pot while I am casting. Also have some trapezoid ones I made myself out of angle iron and welded them up with sides and handles. I don't use those very often but every once in awhile I do.

fellow South Carolinian here, and I can't find any tire shops willing to give up wheel weights cause they already have deals with other people that want them (haha, and now I know who!). but I'm lucking to work at a TA Truck Shop where I get first dibs on any weights that come off the tires, and some of these truck tires take up to a full pound to balance them and times that by 10 tires on the tractor and 8 on the trailer. I think the most I've ever pulled off was 5 pounds of lead weights after swapping out all 8 drive tires. only down side is they are around 80% stick on weights. if I ever get desperate enough I might try cracking open one of the massive 60lb batteries those trucks take. we always have around 30 of them on a pallet we sell for scrap.
