Brass Gears: Never scrap these. The gears are worth $5-15 each. Or, leave a message with the Calgary Steampunk Society, they'll surely offer you more than a scrapper would and take the whole lot. Ammo Casings: With the price of ammo these days, you gotta be able to sell those casing to reloaders, no? Many multiples of their scrap value. Good to see you held onto them.

They had a 55 gallon drum of ammo casings at my scrap yard. I picked out a ton of .300 win mag, 30-30, 30-06, 32-20 and 45-70 brass among others. Resold them at the gun show the following weekend. Wish I would of kept track of the profits but it was definitely more than 1000%. I left the common calibers like 9x19 and .556x45 but looking back on it I should've spent the time to grab and sort those as well. Hell, I should've bought the barrel! Definitely worth more than Scrap value here in the USA.

Weren’t those the kind of transformers that you can just hit on the weld with a hammer? That would have taken 10 minutes at best, if they were. Maybe give that a go next time :)

Yes you are correct, we called them ballasts. I use to assemble them using an arc welder. The easiest way to take them apart is to place them on something solid, like the floor and hit it with a hammer on the top of the T. The weld should pop away because they are not made to have solid welds, they are only welded enough so they don't fall apart. It's a T and 2 Ls welded together with normally 2 copper coils and 2 shunts between the coils so when you are hitting the top of the ballast you are aiming for the L's which should pull them apart from the T. Once you have the 2 sides off, turn it upside down, hold the coils, and hit it on the floor. It should start to push the T through the bottom. Then take the hammer you used, with it still upside down, turn the hammer upside down, place the bottom of the hammer to the the top of the T and hit it off the floor. After a couple tries you should end up with the 2 coils on the hammer handle and separated from the rest. It normally doesn't take much to do that since what they are coated in is varnish which seals the unit making it water proof since they are normally used for outside units and they are then baked in a giant oven. It's not normally hard to hammer them apart because it might not look like it but they are not solid blocks of metal. They are many thin pieces of metal stacked together and then welded. Hope that helps, when they failed Quality after they came out of the oven I had to scrap them and I could take one apart in about 20 seconds. Oh when I refer to the top of the T I mean when it is upside down. ⊥ like so

One thing I like about this channel is that Thub discusses what is NOT worth taking apart for scrap. Here is my recent lesson. I had an Apple extended keyboard with some bad keys so I decided to salvage the aluminum housing. It took way too much time and effort prying to get it apart for the $1 of aluminum, but I was determined to finish. Then, it fizzled, threw a few sparks, billowed black smoke for a minute, and smoldered for a few more minutes. Fortunately I was outside and immediately threw it down wind onto the driveway. No harm done, but I will never bother with that again. Lol

@@vincenthoran6209 I agree. I am about 20 miles from the scrap yards that pay decently. I like to at least have a 100# of copper(#2) and then I will throw some other of my lower paying stuff in to basicly free up space. I have taken stuff in the last 9 weeks and each week so far I have at least 100# of copper in each load. my copper stash is getting low seeing I also did a deal with another guy that makes statues that brought 2500# of my copper. I also like going first thing in the morning and being first inline, then we go shopping of some type after it to help offset the drive into town.

@@vincenthoran6209 It feels good to have a good payday like that. so many won't collect and strip things when the price is low but I still do, keeps me busy. then when the price goes up so many want to split the load money with you and I just tell them call another scrapper I am too busy hauling out of my private yard. Easy to find scrap to strip when the price is low.

The whatever pieces of lead that were in the clock weights are tire balance weights. If you look in the dumpsters behind tire shops you will find lots of those.

It is nice to run the suv in with 100#' or a few hundred #s of clean precious metals and leave with more money than running the truck and trailer in with a ton of scrap steel on it. Yes, most transformers I take apart too for the extra money, so many think it is waste of time though, I don't. Yep those garbage disposers only have aluminum wire in them. .

Nice totals! One thing a scrap yard worker told me was take the top off the AC unit, cut the wires and copper pipes from the compressor, turn the unit upside down with the walls in tact and whack the four bolts through the bottom and the weight of the hanging compressor helps it fall off easily. It can leak a little oil sometimes. Faster than undoing the bolts though!

transformers- pinch the plates in the corners to seperate them with wire cutters , once you get a few plates out the whole thing loosens and you can slip all the plates out from each side leaving everything seperated. youll be left with all the plates and copper in 2 different piles with little effort, no cutting needed.

Great channel and content Thub recently ran across you videos and subbed! regarding those larger clock movements , it's my experience that when these movements aren't functioning and it doesn't look like anything is broken inside, usually it just means that the movement needs a cleaning... You can usually just take the movement out fairly easily and then hit it up with a break cleaner type spray and or set it in a "bath" of wd-40 and then spray it down with break cleaner afterwards to help remove the excess wd 40. the oil that was used when they were last serviced or fixed has hardened and then the above method helps to get rid of the dried up oil residue to make the gears run smoothly again.

Yeah, if you leave everything as shred, you are throwing away money. Ceiling fans come apart easily and you can sell the motors separately - or go another step and get the copper out of the motor. Just depends on what your time is worth. I disagree with Drake at times with aluminum v/s dirty aluminum. I don’t clean as much as he does, but again, it comes down to metal or prices and time. Good luck out there! Oh yeah, space too… I have bins and buckets stashed everywhere. 🤣

Ballast the hard way, couple smacks with a hammer on the welds and they fall apart. Also the fire sprinkler heads are pretty much solid brass chunks and unscrew easily

Hey thumbprint! I was watching you video on taking apart the extricate motors for copper and you were complaining about how your angle grinder disc's were getting to small get get all the way through the copper winding. I would highly recommend getting a Dimond blade! I get the one from marnsrds witch is masterforce and love it. The only down side of them is that they do not work on steel very well so you have to switch back and forth between the two different blades. Hopefully you find this helpfull!

NC here, we have no laws other than the refrigerant needs to be properly recaptured. Empty units are fair game. I get them all the time.

Depends on cost & who makes the wire , alot of cheap 4,6,8,10 etc. Gauge wire is CCA COPPER COATED aluminum, and expensive OFC is pure copper wire durable for welding cables or high wattage stereo amplifiers etc. I am sure you already knew this😊

I’ve played with it a bit, I’ve got a small playlist of those videos too but I need to check with my scrapyard what they’d buy them as. Chances are they’ll be #2 grade and if so the value would actually be lower than if a person hadn’t spent the time and fuel. It’s fun and space efficient, but likely a waste of time if the main goal is to make money

Yea you basically have to be a watchmaker/clockmaker to fix that grandfather clock. Almost not worth the time but maybe it wouldve been valuable to a watch maker for parts. Even if its $20-$40.

Hey dude, I take copper out of compressors a lot, but have the hardest time taking the string that is wrapped around the copper windings. Can I just turn in the copper with the string on it and have it count as copper number two?

Oh yeah, that’s what I do. All the shellac and oil pretty much guarantees it goes in as #2 anyway so I don’t stress much over making it pristine. I just take the big chunky bits of paper or plastic out so it looks pretty good and leave it at that

I think I showed it close up in my big motor pile video? It’s just an electric SDS demolition hammer. The trick is making sure it has a selector dial with three modes. Most of them have two modes, rotating drill and rotating hammer drill. The third one is the important one for punching copper, non-rotational hammer. Just make sure it’s got a selector dial with three modes and you’ll know it’s the right one.

Purity. Has more pure aluminum to start with so it can have more options to turn it into whatever the buyer wants by adding the ingredients thier clients desire, when aluminum already has a lot of ingredients it's usage is limited to certain products but still has some value. So many different mixtures of aluminum.

I got told by a construction worker to stay out of the bin a couple days ago because of "liability". Can you get a lawyer to tell us if all us scrappers should quit because of liability? I've never heard of a scrapper suing an owner because he got hurt in a bin? It seems like a urban myth where everyone keeps repeating "liability", but don't know 1 case where it happened.

Hey thub, if you dont mind me asking, do you own a gun? I know canada is pretty strict about ownership but being a red blooded American i feel its important for every sane,sober, moral and prudent person to own one or more if they desire. You should have the ability to be your own first responder rather than calling someone to request someone else to show up with a firearm to protect you in case of emergencies. If/when they show up it could be too late.

Whenever I go to the local metal scrap buyers (big business here)... I'm along for the ride sometimes, helping a friend uload. I always see a long line of hard bitten, social outcasts, drunks, drug users... all in all desperate... and mostly antisocial and surly individuals... begging to be taken advantage of. I would say... if one had two hands and a substance free brain... never do this.
