if the charge wire wasnt in place - just charge the battery rather than trying to take the battery apart as it will be very difficult to get back together.

Hi Adam. Dont worry too much about the circuit board as they are built for the job. I have brought back scooter batteries before using an ordinary car charger. You need to fool into thinking its charging by bridging across the charger leads with light bulbs in series, that is a string of 12v bulbs connected - to + making up the voltage. The bulbs trick the charger into making a charge rather than cutting out. Yours is a far higher voltage so it would be better to use a dedicated charger, but this still might work. Your multimeter is your freind. Check the voltage on each cell and for continuity back to the charging port. I think that loose cable is the likely culprit. I think you are wise charging outdoors as well. If you ever need to clean circuit boards sometimes soap and water works well but alcohol or even carb and brake cleaner is the same, Really enjoying the content Adam. The Petter fest looked amazing.

The ribbon cable is connected across the battery pack cells to monitor the state of charge of the cells. Do not open the battery pack unless you are prepared for a full rebuild.

The ribbon cable is to check the voltage on each individual cell in the pack to check for imbalance.

I think that charger port failed in the first instance, possibly all that was wrong. However, being left uncharged probably led to the battery self discharging to the point where it's cells got either empty, or so low that the BMS decided they were faulty and it then refuses to charge the pack. If you're absolutely sure that charge port plugged into the BMS directly then (somehow, I'll leave it to you) connect the charger back to the plug that goes onto BMS. Then measure voltage on the batteries output, I think those big solder pads that you wire brushed - big red and black leads leading from battery to BMS circuit board. Plug in the charger, and see if that voltage rises. If it's charging, it should do. If charging, charge it for a bit and that voltage should have risen without the charger being connected (it took some charge). If it's not charging than it may well be that cells are too low for BMS to consider charging to be safe (or you just broke it by poking about!). Sometimes, if that's the case, you can bring them up by very slowly charging the whole pack across it's output terminals, but you need to know what you're doing, and accept the risk of fire or it just not working. I have done it, but those low cells are probably a bit damaged at least, so beware. Apart from that, you could probably build one battery out of the two, but seeing as it's not your thing I'd advise against it. It's not a "cleanest dirty rag" sort of job ;)

Put an engine on the back for gods sake Adam! A little 2 stroke from a strimmer or some thing like that. About 25 years back a racing driver whose name I forget imported a load of scooters like that - We bought a load and I picked up the sample from him at his huge house. On the way back I stopped at a car park and practised on it so that when I got back to work I didn't suffer the same misfortune as my boss - he fell off it flat on his face on the tarmac :) Dreadful things! I seem to remember the crank just drove the outside edge of the back tire, so you had to drop the engine as the tyre wore (rapidly)

You should lay a clean rag down on the bench! That ribbon cable is used to balance the charge to the batteries. If there is a dead cell, then your going to have to test each one.

You know Al it takes is one bristle off your wire brush to short it out and "POP!" You've blown a diode or two then it really is scrap! 😢 and there's you poking around with un shielded screwdriver and pick! Don't take tha pack apart, I'll tell you now its a ton of 18650 cells wired in series and it only takes one cell to die and it takes out the whole pack as the charging unit can't work out which cell is bad and just cuts off.

Not sure butt!! You may need a smart charger to reopen the circuit to charge to batteries good luck there as I never have😂😂😂

As a general rule discharged lithium batteries do not catch fire, the problem arises with charged or ones on charge when the separators become damaged and the cells get an internal short circuit, it's the electrical heating that starts the thermal run away. If there is no signs of water ingress and you have corrosion on the circuit board it is highly probable that an electrolytic capacitor has spilled it guts, the electrolyte inside is highly corrosive. If the problem is just that the batteries have been over discharged due to the changing socket being damaged you could try directly connecting to the batteries bypassing the battery management board, you would need a power supply that is just over the nominal voltage of the pack and charge at a current that is about ten percent of the rated ampere hour of the cells so for an 18650 cell the typical rating is 1200 to 3000 mAh the charge current would be between 120mA and 300mA. The problem arises that it is usual for only one or two cells to drop below the minimum voltage so that the BMB shuts the system down, in that case you need to bring those cells up to voltage first. So you need to remove the wrapping from the pack and measure each cell you should have a reading on a charged cell of 3.6 to 4.2 volts.

Li-ion batteries are safe as long as you don't overheat it or short it out. A new BMS is quite cheap but it's 10 to 1 that the ribbon cable will need to be refitted to the cells as the plugs will be different.

Don't disassemble the battery any more. And unless it Don't charge then it may need out. But if it charges don't manhandle all the stuff.

Definitely get your meter on the battery pack. Take the charging port from the other scooter and see if it is ok and try charging this scooter.

Definitely check voltage first, if that pack is even partially charged then any short from the screwdriver, brush etc may have disastrous results. I know nothing about electric scooters, but that charging cable looks ludicrously thin to me, it must take forever to charge. If you manage to charge the pack externally (and no cells are damaged), then find some sort of replacement waterproof charger socket.

Leave the battery pack in situ, test the charge lead for continuity and if okay, try a charge again. Measure the battery voltage on the main red and black wires.

The battery is made up from 18650 or similar cells in series parallel.. These cells need to be balance charged which is what the BMS does. (The cct board in the battery.) The way you've broggled it about it's likely bogarted anyway! Balance charging is complex, but the bottom line is it prevents excess current or voltage being applied to any parallel group of cells, and should if it's well implemented monitor the heat of each parallel group of cells. Too much heat, fire! more than 4.2 volts applied to a parallel group, fire! Be careful! And thats just the tip of the iceberg about what you may need to learn about lithium cells. This emphasises the nonsense of modern electric vehicles, Bloody well unrepairable without a qualification in electronics, and the cost implications make repair not viable. Glad I'm retired from all that!

Hi I just thought I would message you and let you know are notorious for battery problems I have owned a few of these even though they are totally illegal to ride on the road as I found out got served a £300 fine and 6 points on my licence but I can't tell you the batteries are notorious in these for failing if they are not charged for over 2 months they go into what's known as fail safe mode I won't accept the charge however they have to regularly be charged in order to maintain battery performance but I would like to inform you that if you intend to ride these in public you will be prosecuted rest assured as they are currently illegal to ride on the roads and in public places they can only be ridden at your address or on your land I got fined £300 6 points on my licence for having no so-called insurance by the idiotic t***** police force who ain't got f*** or else better to do and then persecute people who want cheap alternative transport and the method of getting around but the battery should pop out also to replace the battery pack on this it is nearly as expensive as the scooter in the price range of £150 or more hope this helps

My basic knowledge having repaired my own ebike battery is not a lot but.... These batteries are monitored by a BMS pcb which takes care of safe charging and discharging. It is possible to replace the BMS but it is best to test each battery if you can safely. Remember to keep metal tools, watches, finger rings away from the battery. Also bear in mind that it us illegal to use those scooter on public areas, roads, paths, parks etc so unless you plan to use them around your property I would forget repair and recycle the batteries into something useful.
