I already know how he's going to do it: dip the jerk in polyurethane up to his neck and let it dry. Then take out his X-acto knife and show him a few clips of this restoration before finally saying "Okay, get ready. I think this will take about 48-72 hours..."

I'm still trying to figure out how anyone would have considered polyurethane a reasonable restorative solution. It has me thinking that I'd like to see a video from Baumgartner on restoration materials that past restorers thought were a good idea at the time, but current restorers reject (or even hate).

Honestly, on a very small piece that doesn't have any value so you aren't quite as worried about even the slightest damage, this seems like a genuinely pleasurable task. What makes it hell is the fact that the piece has value and any damage is too much damage, so you'd need to be fully concentrated on the task.

IMPORTANT! I'm not "allowed" to discuss this in a public manner because the head of our conservation department (U.K-based.. EXTREMELY large university... lots of colleges... hint hint) decided they wanted to "keep it secret or try to patent some kind of kit 🤮" -- anyway.. we've had a LOT of success removing poly (among others) finishes by super cooling it with liquid nitrogen and then agitating it with an ultrasonic probe (same ones dentists use but our aforementioned department idiot makes us use a "custom" tip to throw us off of the actual implement - we're not so easily fooled). You have NO IDEA how quickly and effectively it works. I'd really love for you to test it out in your workshop... I hope you find this comment and it serves you well! I've also had to spend (what seems like) lifetimes scrapping scrapping scrapping!

@Caleb M. F in the narrated version he explains the polyurethane is bonded to the paint. As it flakes off you can see tiny white specks of canvas show through, especially in the closeup of the sky. But if he used a solvent to remove it, it would also take off paint. He retouches it at the end and restores it to the artist's original vision.

You know, the more I've thought about it, the more it's seemed to me that the thought process of using polyurethane was, "This stuff is clear and when it hardens is basically impregnable, it's the perfect material to coat a painting in to protect it!" without knowing/understanding/thinking about what might happen in the course of time further on from then, how it might need to be dealt with by a future restorer.

There I was walking down a random aisle at the hardware store, when suddenly I heard a voice. Voice: Hey, buddy, over here. Me: Who me? Voice: Over here, on the shelf. Our eyes met. It was a big honking can of POLYURETHANE! Me: What do you want with me? Polyurethane: You know that painting on your wall? The one with the boats? Me: The painting of the harbor that I inherited from my grandparents? Polyurethane: Yeah, yeah, that’s the one. It would be a shame if anything happened to it. Me: Like what? Polyurethane: I don’t know. Use your imagination. But, listen, I can help. Me: Help? How? Polyurethane: I can offer… protection. Me: PROTECTION? Polyurethane: Shhh! Yeah, protection. Look, you loved your grandparents, right? Me: Sure, but… Polyurethane: And it would be downright careless to let the dirt and grime of this filthy, stinking world get all over the painting they left you, right? I’m sure that painting meant a lot to them. Me: Actually, I think maybe they bought it at a garage sale. Polyurethane: That’s not the point! Grab me off the shelf, see, take me home and let's slather on a nice thick coat of crystal clear, airtight protection over that precious piece of art. Me: I don’t know. Julian doesn’t seem to think too highly of you. Polyurethane: Julian? Julian who? Me: Julian Baumgartner. Polyurethane: Baumgartner? That guy who spits steel tacks? Me: That’s him! And if there’s one thing he hates more than staples, it’s POLYURETHANE! Polyurethane: Listen, I didn’t know you knew Julian. It was all a big mistake. I was just kidding. I didn’t mean it. Me: You can’t fool me. You’re no art protector. You’re an art destroyer! Polyurethane: Scram! Get lost! Me: No, I will not get lost! I know all about you, mister. I will stand here warning others about the dangers of using polyurethane to protect original paintings. In fact, Julian had a whole video where he scraped polyurethane off an old painting with a sharp scalpel, chip by chip, flake by flake. Polyurethane: Ahh! Stop! Stop! I can’t take it! Me: Attention, everyone! It’s a can of POLYURETHANE! Please keep your artwork at a distance!
