Scrapping a huge 450 Amp Oil Welder for Copper.
Oil welders are a great source for copper. They are a real pain in the neck to rip apart and extremely heavy. But if you can be bothered to spend the time they might just be worth it.
They are full of copper, brass, steel and oil.

Yeah it was a big score for £100 and a lot of fun ripping it apart !!! Full of useful things - 80 litres of oil (for a furnace oil burner), a few kg of brass, 65kg of copper and a big metal container on wheels to store the metal in !! Cheers Andy 🍺🍺🍺

Thank you, it wasn't as easy as i was expecting. It took several weekends - waiting for it to drain and getting the engine hoist delivered from work. But worth it in the end, so much copper !!! Cheers 🍺👍👍👍

I got tired just thinking about all the work of the dismantling, let alone how long it will take to melt! But destroying things and melting are fun (as long as you keep all your fingers, toys, hair, etc!) Congrats on the find and good luck on the melt!

The transformer oil is most likely laden with highly toxic PCBs (now banned). I had a 280Amp similar unit and had the same problem. Over here in NZ, it's classed as toxic waste. :(
@MeltandCast
@MeltandCast 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Rangie... Guess i won't be cooking my fish and chips in it then....hehe. Fortunately there's a waste disposal facility not too far from me that should take it.... I'll get in contact with them next week... hope they don't charge too much :(... Thanks for letting me know, I was saving it as fuel for a furnace burner... Andy 🍺🍺🍺

Very bad stuff for liver and other useful organs. I cringed a little watching with no rubber gloves on. It passes through skin fairly easily and into bloodstream. Gloves and apron next time mate. Do your melting outside for sure.

@@david4499 Thanks for the warning David, I didn't realise the dangers at the time... As Rangie pointed out I need to get the oil containers collected and processed. Hope it doesn't cost too much...!! Looks like real nasty stuff when I looked it up... Thanks again for the heads up... Andy 🥂🥂🥂

Cheers Vaughn. I know, beautiful craftsmanship. The oil in the reservoir really keeps the shine on the copper parts. Unfortunately it does fade into a dull copper colour after a while. If I ever get another one I'll try and think of something more creative to do with it. They don't make em like they used to, that's for sure hehe.... Andy 🥂🍺👍

It took 4 of us to move the thing after I got it delivered, it weighed 327 kg (720 lb). I had to drag it down the garden with my quad, the wheel kept falling off the welder. I thought I could lift out the top section, but it weighed over 200 kg (440 lb). I didn't have the strength to lift it that high. So I had to get a van a second time to move the hoist back to my house from work. I did it over several weekends it was a right royal pain in the A... so much for a quick tear down hehe. Cheers Andy 🍺🍺🍺

Highly likely David, I was going to use it for a furnace burner. I'm so glad I got a heads up from another commenter about it. Now I have to get it collected as waste, which sounds expensive... Definitely worth considering if your planning on buying a welder for cheap copper.... all of a sudden that cheap copper probably isn't going to be so cheap !! Cheers Andy 🥂

Thanks Ricky, yes mate all copper with some solder on the two main connectors which was cut off. The coils were wrapped in a very thin fabric layer that had been submerged in the oil which had to be removed before melting. Cheers Andy 👍😎👍

Hi Jurijs, it cost me £100 and a 5 hour round trip to collect it in a small van with a tail lift, so add £60 of fuel to that... The totals are at the end of the video. Have a good Christmas mate... Andy 🥂🥂🥂

Cr in the Cu alloy is still a metal. Unless somehow you put it in a strong oxidizer, it will stay in the metallic state.
@MeltandCast
@MeltandCast 4 жыл бұрын
Look up hexavalent chromium and welding fumes. I think the risks with melting would be the same, especially with a furnace exhausting all the fumes into the work area. You might be right, BUT... Molten copper absorbs oxygen, therefore in my mind hexavalent chromium is a risk. Quote "Welding and hot work on stainless steel and other metals that contain chromium" would be considered high risk areas. Hexavalent chromium is really nasty, and highly carcinogenic. It's not worth the risk for the average home caster with little knowledge of such dangers. Best avoid it completely just to be on the safe side. Chromium copper isn't widespread, but it is used in certain applications. Personally speaking I'd rather just not melt it, there's plenty of other decent copper out there. Cheers Andy 😎😎😎
