One thing I stress it that I look for the most ecologically sound methods of scrapping. I make it a priority to recycle as much as i can. Besides making money from scrapping, I feel pride knowing that I am keeping stuff out of landfills.

Hi and thanks for watching! Its a simple two step process. First I take a neodymium or rare earth magnet found in hard drves to it. If it sticks, its stainless steel most likely. Second, you can take a file, or grinder to it and scratch the silvery stuff off. If its yellow under it its brass! Some other tell tale signs are things like that green tarnish you find on copper, brass contains copper. Thanks!

Very good video..can't wait to see part 2
@moosescrapper592811 жыл бұрын
Test it with a magnet, if it sticks its ferrous and not brass. If it does not stick and its yellow but you still are not sure if its brass, grind a section of it. If its yellow all the way through is brass. Other signs that it is brass would be no rust, there may be a green tarnish or patina. Brass is also heavier than aluminum and not the distinctive reddish color of copper. Thanks for watching and asking questions!!

The same thing that happened to Fred Derf happened to me. I was taking apart a Gibson electric stove last night that hasn't been plugged in for about 6 months. I snipped a wire that was very hard to cut. It shot out a bunch of sparks with white smoke & continued to randomly shoot a few out over the next hour or so. I finally dumped some baking soda on the piece of hard wire that was sticking out. It seemed to be connected to a heating element in the stove & the wire ran up to a dial on the top face plate.

Dang, that has never happened to me (knock on wood). That is so weird. I think I need to make a video on discharging things . Thanks for posting!

How do you get the silver out of those tips?
@moosescrapper592811 жыл бұрын
Fittings from Coaxial cables from tv and satellite? These are just about always brass. Kind of like a faucet. As for telling silver from other metals, That's a bit tougher. I had been throwing out relays after just taking the copper out for a long time! My only advice with silver is to get a cheap silver test kit with a testing stone and do searches online for silver in electronics and where to find silver is scrap etc. The goldrefining forum also has a little info on where to find it.

Ok I have a question. The little relay switches that are in microwaves and coffe pots and stuff that deals with heat, are the contacts in thase silver? There small but I get a lot of them.
@markbrennan17568 жыл бұрын
I always pull heat element out, check with magnet, saw off 3 inch off end and sell rest which doesn't stick to magnet as dirty stainless same as irony aluminum or shred aluminum I did that for years. Some water heater element are copper with tiny steel core it sell as dirty copper or 80% copper as long you remove the end.

You are going to want to check the gas lines to see if there is more copper or brass, and the burners might be aluminum, and the parts of the burner you set the pots and pans on may be cast iron which is worth more than the other iron. Look around, use your best judgement, scrap the hell out of it and have fun! Thanks!

For us beginner scrappers, can you provide a guide as to what kind of bins we should be setting up for ourselves. For example, brass and copper would appear to be a no brainier, but what is irony aluminum, or should we separate stainless steel from other steel and why? Thanks.
@moosescrapper59289 жыл бұрын
Sure, here are some links to a few helpful videos. Irony aluminum is aluminum that has been cast on or is attached to iron. These are often found inside electric motors. As for stainless steel, you need to find out what your local scrap yard buy, ad separate according to that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXzXaGSFd9ZghJY kzbin.info/www/bejne/l52uioaanr6dgrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHXWqIFqnrd4sLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYqyan2BmrySrdU kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXy7louHp7iioM0

Not with the older GE stoves, and General Motors stoves. I took apart a double, wall GE oven and it was full of asbestos. There's even a paper manual wiring diagram, glued to inside back plate, for repair men. It says exactly, " note- for service replacement use 16 g.a. ASBESTOS covered wire except as individually noted on leads. I started dismantling it and noticed the paper. The thing is, I ripped into the insulation before seeing that. So who knows how much of that shit I breathed in. Well after that, I took buckets of rain water and soaked it. Then used the backhoe bucket to smash the hell out of it, while ripping the goodies out. If you keep it wet, you should be fine from any asbestos particles. Oh and I was told the center rod in the heating element was copper/nickel with a ceramic powder, covered by a insulated stainless shell. I've been holding on to mine, until I find out exactly what they are. Same goes with the heating elements in furnaces, looks like curled up stainless. It's non ferrous and even the General Motors ovens have them on the inside top of the oven. Those are from the 50s, so who knows . Lol
