In todays video I process some copper/aluminum transformers to determine what the recovery is. I process them through the copper king then weigh each part individually to determine if they are worth breaking down or just sell them off. Leave a comment if you would process them or not. #scrapping #recycling #scrap #diy #projectshopfl #transformers #aluminum #copperking

I use a Milwaukee portaband and have a vice on a steel plate in a plastic drum . That way the mess stays in the drum and off of the floor . The dust will go in to a Gaterade bottle and made into ingots afterwards . After cutting one side off with the portaband , then will turn it over and hit with Air-cat air gun with spike tool it will pull it right out . This the same way that I do motors 👍👍👍 The guy's at the yard love the way that they are cut and they can see beautiful RED gold showing through .

Really enjoy the breakdown videos you do on ballasts & transformers. You & thubprint are definitely my favorite scrapping channels. As an electrician I save all of my ballasts & transformers to recycle. I had a few of these combo transformers sitting around for a while. Finally decided just to remove the CU coils and bring in as irony aluminum. When I arrived at the yard I told them the coils were AL on the transformers and they still gave me the premium price as if they were CU transformers, LOL.

Thanks! That was nice of them to give you the petter price. Back in the day I was able to sell all aluminum transformers as electric motors. They are on to it now though. lol

In my state at the start of this year some of the yards stopped buying orders above 600 bucks without taking the federal taxes out on the spot for legal purposes. That alone would make it hard for a smaller company to compete with the large scrap yards.

I have a 4x8 table half full of transformers, I typically use my porta-band to cut the welds at the seam. An angle grinder would definitely be faster but I cannot stand grinding dust in my shop. As far as the hammer mill goes, the shaker table would easily be able to separate the copper and aluminum due to their density being so different. It would definitely be a two stage process. Hammer mill with 1/2” screen to a conveyor that passes under a mag belt then dump into a secondary hammer mill to further reduce it to 1/4” minus or smaller then onto the shaker table.
@ProjectShopFl

Reference using the tin snips, we are all entitled to use or adapt any tools to our purpose, we pay for them. Me, I use elcheapo tin snips for wires, and leave the tin snips in the tool box. But I have several tools that I have adapted to other purposes. So tell those fussy buggers to nick off. Ken from Australia.

I made a video about it but you should try putting a piece of carpet on your table and break a transformer by hand . It’s easier in my opinion you don’t need a ledge to balance on and it gives it the “give” to knock the weld loose
@ProjectShopFl
@ProjectShopFl Жыл бұрын
I seen you doing that. I will have to try that but I think the carpet will absorb some of the impact.

I would imagine a hammer mill set up like mbmm has you could mag the steel like you said. I think his wet density shaker table would separate the copper and aluminum fairly well. Maybe you should reach out to him about a collaborative video between you guys. Justa thought
@ProjectShopFl
@ProjectShopFl Жыл бұрын
His shaker table would separate it no problem but you would have to run it again through a smaller screen hammer mill I would think.
@clairleasure434
@clairleasure434 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think it would be a multi step process. Run it through the big hammer to mag out the steel then through a tighter screen before the shaker like when he runs ore. Although it probably would not be cost effective to buy/build that kind of machinery. Unless you were processing a serious amount of scrap it would take forever to see a return on the investment.

Interesting breakdown and analysis. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Is it worth it? With the equipment and machines you have I would say yes it is. (except the all Alum ones). For the average Joe with a hammer and chisel, I guess it's a matter of figuring out how much the Labor cost is. Since it would take more time, ROI would be lower. I guess it would depend on each persons needs. If somebody is needing the money bad enough, they're going probably have to put in the hard labor to get every last penny.

So if the Wire Stripper is the copper king, what do you call your transformer press?
@ProjectShopFl
@ProjectShopFl Жыл бұрын
When I say the copper king I am referring to the hole table not just one machine. When I'm done It will have the baddest wire stripper, a granulator, transformer press, a stator/electric motor recycling machine, and a AC compressor opener. I will be able to process anything with copper. Lol
@ScrapFatherScrapSon
@ScrapFatherScrapSon Жыл бұрын
So I think you asked what the yard would take a mixed transformer as(1/2 copper/aluminum) my yard will take them as electric motors if one coil is copper, along with Double copper transformers:$0.22 / pound They will buy it as scrap if it is aluminum. Hope this helps. Curious to know that electric motors are going for right now for you?!
